Thanks again,
Jay
Just got a Sony a7iii with the kit lens and found this super useful. Most people just dismiss it and say it's not worth using but you made me reconsider. Thanks!
been watching your vids since 2015 since I got my a7r2, your kids are getting huge! great vids man.
A lot of good samples. Good review. Thanks.
Great review! Definitely straight to the point and details!
really good review helps me a lot!
Had not watched your channel in a while, its nice to see how your adorable kind has gowned. Like you I got this lens as a kit with the 7III and is quite pleased with it. I have since purchase a fast Sigma 35mm F1.4 and the 50mm 1.8 . I am quite pleased with that wide to tele. collection. Your channel is a service to Sony users like meself, thanks.
Thank you for the nice comments Rick :) I really was happy with this lens and for the money it is way better than most people would have you believe. Often times kit lenses get no love at all, but when you look at the cost, it's really a great lens "for the money". The "for the money" part is key to this review. After testing so many top quality lenses over the years I can clearly see why they are better, but they cost double, triple, and even quadruple the cost of this kit lens. If you are newer to photography, you might not even notice some of the differences. This is why I think anybody new to photography and the full frame format should really start with the kit lens, or at least a more affordable lens. Once you develop a bit as a photographer you start to find the focal ranges you prefer to use and what conditions or subjects you like to capture.
At that point if you really love photography and all it has to offer, you can save and invest in some better lenses that will give you better results in any given area. Primes being the best quality for the aperture speed and sharpness usually, but also way more limiting due to the fixed focal length. This is also why I recommended the FE 24-105 OSS G lens (bhpho.to/2yQC617) for an upgrade unit. It's not crazy expensive, and will yield you an awesome range with excellent quality you will notice over the kit lens. The FE 50mm f/1.8 (bhpho.to/2keEzPr) is also a perfect option for speed and a very popular range for portraits of children and stuff, so I would also highly recommend that lens to those on a super tight budget.. Good call with the Sigma primes as well ;) For the money they look to be dynamite optics!
Jay
Excellent video, great work. Thank you very much!!
Would love you to compare the kitlens with the Tamron 28-75mm.... as nobody has done that yet
The 28-70mm Sony is a very decent lens that can be had for a very low used price and which, when shot at around f/5.6 or f/8 will give you satisfactory results, such as this example...
rpcrowe.smugmug.com/CELYNE/i-z4rs34K/A
However, when I replaced this lens with the 28-75mm f/2.8 Tamron, I was astounded at the increased image quality both on my full frame A7iii and my crop sensor A6400.
I had a 20x24-inch metal photo print done of this image which was shot with the Tamron lens on my A6400 and the quality is absolutely superb...
rpcrowe.smugmug.com/Dia-de-los-Muertos-Hollywood-Forever-3019/i-tFw2487/A
The question remains, is the Tamron lens 3.5x better than the Sony (NOTE: you can easily find a mint Sony for $200 USD while the least expensive used Tamron is about $750 USD) is up to the user. I don't quantify how much better the Tamron is than the Sony - just that I am very happy that I made the switch.
And, BTW, you can always shoot the Tamron at f/5.6 or f/8 but, you cannot shoot the Sony at f/2.8...
Amazing video, thank you!
I shoot with primes mostly on my A6500 but, for just kicking around, especially for family pictures; this lens is great. I don't like shooting people with wider focal lengths because of the natural distortion I get from shooting up close to people...
finally someone who actually give a good review, thank you man.
I'm using a Canon 100-300mm with Sigma MC-11 adapter and it's quite good and sharp. It supplements the kit lens I have. I got the Canon lens used for 50 dollars (it was rarely used) and then got a used MC-11 adapter for 149 from Keh. So basically a large zoom for 200, plus being able now to use my Canon 50mm 1.8 STM lens with the adapter too. It will join my Sony 28 f2 lens, Sony 85 1.8 lens and some vintage lenses. Use them on the Sony a7rii as well as the a6000.
Best kit lense video review ever!!! Thx
i found this video super super useful thank you soo muchhhhhh
Thank you very much for the comments and kind words ;) I'm glad the video helped you out!!
great review!
Got this lens aside two Voigtlanders.
It came with the A7 at €1000, nice one Sony!
Excellent video! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you!!
I really like this for kit photos, or kid's photos, or whatever photos you take with a kit lens. I'd skip Sony's original 24-70 f4 and the very expensive 24-70 f2.8, and get either Sony's excellent 24-105 f4 or Tamron's 28-75 f2.8 as the serious options.
I totally 100% agree Pavlos, and thank you for the comments!
Thanks Jay- very interesting review. It will make a lot of people reconsider the kit lens before discarding it as "unworthy". Another thing that could be mentioned is that it is very easy to pick up a "used" copy of this lens for for even less than $300 as people buy the full frame as a kit and then immediately buy a 'better' lens for the camera body. On a personal note, it is lovely to see your kids growing up in front of our eyes! Laila has really sprung up and Jayce looks like he is full of mischief. Nice family!
Thank you very much for the kind comments about the family, and really good call about the used option ;)
I always find your "real world" lens reviews helpful, Jay. I just ordered the Tamron 28-75 2.8 yesterday. It is on backorder so it will be month or two before I have it but it will be interesting to compare it to the kit lens. The GM is just too expensive when the Tamron alternative is available for most users. I had strongly considered the Sony 24-105 f.4 as well but size, aperture, weight, better price, and great reviews all tipped the scales toward the Tamron.
I just bought a copy that is only one month old for 175.00 Seller said the lens was sharp, but he already had a Zeiss zoom for his new camera so didn't need it.
@@martin9410 Wow! That's a fantastic buy! Congrats! I had to purchase mine from a camera store in another province as they were sold out everywhere! It seems some people have money to burn, buying new lenses just to try out the latest! From what I have read the Zeiss zoom in that range is rather disappointing but as long as he was happy with it ..... you got a great buy! Btw, I love my Tamron 28-75 f2.8. It is a great fit with the a7iii.
Great review. Thanks for sharing.
Do you have any idea when Sony plans on updating the Sony FDRX3000, Action Cam?
Thanks.
Thank you for the comments, and no I do not. Sony is making some announcements on new gear at the upcoming photo shows though, so perhaps soon... It's hard to bit the bullet when you suspect a better unit is just over the horizon, I feel ya!
thank you ....for.... your....encouragement
I'm...waiting...for ..this...lense....
I'm agree with you for this kit lens, it's worth for money. I got one with my A7, and for the 24Mpix it's ok, good images, even if aperture is limiting the shallow depth of field. On my A7R3, the quality of images is too average, and I don't use it now.
Whats the difference if we put a lens on another body?
Sir
Can i use for shortfilm making at lowlight conditions
Nice review. Got this lens and as you said it's very inexpensive, but with great results.
Thanks Jason, great video as always. I got my Rx100 vii because of you. I took it to Greece and took a few amazing pictures. Now I am getting an A7iv with kit lens. What should my next lens. I like street photography but I don't like to be up in the people face. What Sigma lens should I get. And I will be using the 28-70 so I don't need a duplicate of the kit lens. Thanks you.
First off that is awesome and thanks for mentioning the RX100 VII :) As far as full frame goes you nailed it with the A74. For a high quality telephoto I would consider the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Lens (geni.us/As8Maw9) If you want more zoom than that the Sony 70-300mm (geni.us/76vszL) is also a great option! Cheaper option would be the Tamron 70-300mm (geni.us/U8QscS) If you only want one lens you could sell the 28-70mm and get the FE 24-240mm OSS Lens (geni.us/4I3HQD) for an all-in-one affordable option? Or you could go a prime lens route? Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 lens (geni.us/rtuL62) or something like that for the street... I hope that helps and with a budget I could narrow down some options if you want... All the best, Jay
Thanks again Jay, your truly the the best.
Would you recommend the Zeiss 24-70 f4 for 400$ over the 28-70 kit for 200$ ? I watched reviews where the 24-70 is sharper and vice versa.
Great review! Thank you! Did you test it with a7iii?
Thank you and yes I used the Sony A7 III.
Great review as always! I just got picked this up for £130 in the UK. I know other reviews don't paint it in a great light but they're often comparing other optically superior lenses or non-real-world scenarios (like zooming in at 400%). I already have the sony 24-105 f/4 (for more serious stuff) and a 28-200 + 17-28 Tamron combo for travel but needed something lighter than both of these for pottering around. I also have the RX100 V when I just don't want to carry the full frame. The last lens I have is the 55 1.8 (for portraits love this!). Aware that most of my focal lengths do overlap, but all have their place (in my mind). If you have a min, I'd really love any feedback on where I could streamline this if I've missed an obvious affordable option that might cover my range better. Technically I should sell the sony 24-105, but the quality of that thing (for my work, capability, and budget) is amazing. Thanks Jay ☺🙏🏾
I think you are covered Jo :) The only range I don't see is telephoto beyond the 200mm you have... Another great lens that is reasonable price wise is the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens. I have that and use it often for portraits and product shots. I also use the Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 which I recently got and am loving big time!! My new favorite lens :) At this point you know what you like and you have a great spread, so needing anything is not really an issue, but trying new stuff and buying and selling can be fun. I would consider trying a few prime lenses if you want to see how they do for you compared to say the Tamron 17-29mm for example. There are 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, f/1.8 lenses for example you may or may not like to try and then you have super telephoto like the 150-500mm Tamron and the like... I really appreciate you sharing and I have a bunch of Viltrox prime lenses I don't use much. I wish you lived closer and I would let you barrow all of them... All the best, Jay 👊
@@Jason_Hermann Jay thank you so much for replying - I hadn't expected it or such a detailed and considered response, I'm really grateful. I love your call for me to perhaps try more zooms. I saw a comment on a post yesterday from someone who said they were more considered in their use of zooms by using them only at standard focal lengths such as the ones you suggest (or by the ones marked on the lens) so perhaps I will give myself some time of trying to do this first before buying a few. I might also try using the "clear zoom" function to achieve an extension on the Tamron to get a 400 mm-ish telephoto to see how this looks (albeit jpeg only). And yes, the exception would be getting the 85mm which I hear is fab. Thanks again Jay - means a lot you'd even consider loaning your primes if I lived closer. By the way, you should have a donate button up here, I would have given a little for your time today. Best wishes, Jo
@@nohandle-01 I'm really glad you found my response helpful!! There is a thanks button if you want and in the video description I have some links, but that is not necessary :) All the best, Jay
So, I'm upgrading from the a7ii to the a7iii and I already have the 24-240mm, I don't suppose it makes sense to get the 28-70 as well. Although, I can always sell it for at least as much as I aid for it.
Yeah, not sure if it pays to get the kit lens if you already have the 24-240mm, but like you said, you can sell it...
Very nice
Thanks
too good
why does it start at 28 and not 24? so that you need to buy another lens
Yeah, pretty much if you want wider than 28mm ;)
Word IS that the 3

Just got this for 80 dollars. Im not kidding. The condition was like new.
Awesome deal!!
Better as the Zeiss 24-70 F4!!
No this lens is not better than the Zeiss FE 24-70 f/4 Lens although much cheaper!
Bashakill huh? Must be a Hudson Valley guy like me I'm guessing
Oh yeah, I'm in the area neighbor ;)
@@Jason_Hermann good to know. Picking up my a7iv at BH tomorrow so I'll be creeping on your channel. Thanks buddy.
Great vid but the average view of any video does not look for such details .. that's crazy

I have had 2 copies of this lens, both were quite bad with A7RII and A6300 optically. Not even worth the second-hand price. If you cannot afford a good lens with A7RII, just don't buy it. I mean, this lens was bad even at f8! Maybe it was a copy-variance problem but hey I bought those 2 copies with my own money so it is not my fault.
I'm sorry to hear that. The copy I had while using with the lower resolution A7 III was pretty darn good I thought, especially for the cost! Clearly the G, GM< and Zeiss lenses offer better optics, but at a huge cost comparatively.. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Lens (amzn.to/2OG5WiU) looks pretty darn awesome as well!
I got this lens recently for $50.- on flea market. This is more than enough for such a mediocre glass. Probably it would feel good on 3,4 MP camera, but not on 8+ MP bodies.
