At 3:48, 'I wish I were there'. Yes I wish I were there in this concert hall. The very best of its kind. Bravo to both of them.

I'd be thankful if you could correct the spelling:
Auf dem Hügel sitz ich spähend
      Wo die Berge so blau
      Leichte Segler in den Höhen
      Diese Wolken in den Höhen
Es kehret der Maien, es blühet die Au
Nimm sie hin denn, diese Lieder

Beautiful. I love the teamwork. The piano is as important as the voice but never takes over. I adore the voice of Fischer Dieskau. He carries me into the story every time.

A friend of my father's Irene Salemka recorded Don Giovanni with him. She told me when he sung in the recording studio he held the microphone close to his mouth like Bing Crosby and didn't sing like you would on stage. She said she sung normally but his voice came out the best of the singers because of his experience in the recording studio

I must have watch it many times, and always find something new. 1:12 "und die Seufzer"... just listen the way Moore plays the next two notes, and Dieskau reaction. Two true artists side by side.

I found a technically much more refined recording of this (with FD too) on Spotify, yet I keep coming back to this. It is much more real and human than most things on CD.

I sang this when I was in college many years ago. F-D finds so many little nuances that I could only dream of. E.g. in the first song, third verse, how he drops the vibrato for one word: "Seufzer" (sighs). The pianissimo entrance at 8:36. And you have no idea how difficult it is sing as quietly as he does at 11:06 and 12:05 and especially 13:05.
Of course, it helps when he's got the best accompanist that ever lived.

What a pleasure to read the intelligent, perceptive, appreciative comments below - so different from manky RUclips postings, alas. I can only add that I am bowled over by F-D's "art that conceals art". It all sounds and seems as natural as breathing but this is only possible because of the years of work of every kind. But he manages to make the work disappear and only leaves us with the sheer joy of making "art".

He was a superior human being in every way. He was drafted into the army at age 18. In Italy he fired his bullets into the ground , refusing to kill Americans. He was an acclaimed painter, wrote books about Schubert lieder, and Schumann lieder, and of course the voice!!

I first heard Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the 1950s, and wish today that I'd been able to appreciate him more. Hope I make up now for my ignorant adolescence! Love listening to him again. Thank you so much.

Ian Li TV film by Christopher Nupen, first broadcasted on August 13, 1972. It also included the Beethoven songs Sehnsucht, Wonne der Wehmut, Mailied, Neue Liebe, neues Leben and the Flohlied. See: ruclips.net/p/PLxKnKyD1U-Fky_gn14cACpxymErOhKRB
The ZDF-logo (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen) was probably added at a later date, when the program was repeated. For more information you should turn to the ZDFtheaterkanal, or ZDFkultur as it is called today.
