One of the greatest moments not only in Australian sporting history, but a great moment as a nation as a whole. For that special 50 odd seconds every single Australian was cheering as one people.

This was one of the best moments in sporting history. I still get goosebumps watching it 14 years on! Not only was Freeman an exceptionally talented athlete physically but she was also able to absorb the extraordinary pressure she was under to win this race on her home soil. Freeman is still number 6 (her 1996 run in Atlanta) on the all-time 400m list and all of the women ahead of her on that list (with the exclusion of Marie Jose Perec) were from Eastern Europe with times recorded pre-1985 when drug use was rampant and unmonitored.

Great to watch this again since I was there live!
My journey to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games from Sweden is one of the high lights of my life. I was strucked by all the kindness I met from all the people and I was strucked by Cathy Freeman popularity! I realized that I've bought THE ticket of the games when I tried to trade it for the table tennis finals. An Aussie girl told I me to keep it and go to the stadium for the experience of my life. Because all Australia was expecting their most popular athlete to win this gold medal. No one was going to miss it! And she was right. The stadium was crowded to the last seat! I've never heard 128.000 people roar and scream at the same time before. And all the camera flashes witch followed her along the track. It was truly magic. This still gives med goosebumps.

I am so proud of Cathy. It still brings tears to my eyes. She probably wouldn’t remember me, but i am the same age as her and we played together on Palm Island. My mum was a Bahai and i would go with her when she travelled from the mainland to visit indigenous Bahais. We also had prayer services on the beach in Mackay. Would have been late 1970s. I have fond memories of those days with the indigenous ❤

@rcaddict72 What a ridiculous comment! It was an Olympic record - hardly "pedestrian" or "the slowest 400m womens (sic) finals (sic) for a looong (sic) time"! Learn your history, learn to spell and learn some respect. Cathy Freeman was and is a great Australian athlete and a fantastic role model for young people, especially indigenous youngsters. She deserves enormous respect for withstanding the enormous pressure she was under - and with an Olympic record to boot was phenomenal!

BUT when olympics come to the southern hemisphere, the rest of the worlds athletes perform well under par, and the women;s 400m is in a period where its the worst strength ever. that doesnt take anything away from her winning, but it does take alot away from her being revered as a "great athlete"..which she arguably is not. a good athlete- yes. assisted by the olympics in her timezone, climate and backyard- sure.

Just pointing out the obvious that's all. She clearly hasn't been looking after herself very well, and may suggest that the stresses and strains of being a professional athlete took its toll on her, but that's no way to negect your health and well-being.
