- Why are the police bringing military assault rifles to protests? And where did they get them?
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Across the country, Americans protesting racial injustice and police brutality - the overwhelming majority of them peacefully - have been met by police forces that look more like an army. Officers have shown up to protests with riot gear, armored trucks, and military rifles. This is what America’s police now look like, and it’s the result of a decades-long buildup of military equipment among the country’s police departments. It began as a Reagan-era program to give police departments more resources to fight the War on Drugs, and has escalated ever since. Today, the idea of a militarized police force is baked into how American police see themselves.

There's not a problem with the police having more equipment with varied degrees of enforcement so they can respond to threats more effectively. It's the fact that they deploy military grade equipment on the dumbest of things. You shouldn't respond in the same manner to a peaceful manifestation than to a bank assault or terroristic threats.
While a lot of this stuff is overkill the thing is criminals and people that just want to cause destruction will take advantage of those protest . It happens during the blm protests and others as well
Peaceful protests can change into riots in the blink of an eye.
@randomguyoninternetidk4014 That's still not excuse to gas a protest, especially from a country that encourages protests.
I mean gas is an effective tool to disperse a mob of people, but the problem is that it doesn't distinguish between a rioter and an innocent person, it can actually be even used against the police force itself. So yeah, not the best thing to bring to a protest which can involve innocent bystanders and even children and it leaves the zone unusable for an entire day.
Gas is better suited in other scenarios like siege an illegal occupation, not on the streets in the middle of a protest.
Thats why, have the gear, don't deploy it on every occasion, a hammer is not the best tool every time.
@@randomguyoninternetidk4014 I would assume most of the time it's because tens to hundreds of cops eventually show up with military equipment and incite violence.
This video apparently simplified the drug problem in the 80s, while ignoring how it led to sophisticated issues, like gang and cartel violence, that actually caused the police to militarize
It goes both sides...
Because the police got more militarized, the gangs and criminals got too.
@@lejey4971 was the other way around actually
@@user-wu6qb2xl1c you sure about that?
Or do you think that?
@@lejey4971 criminals got more advanced and dangerous, so we needed more stuff, and it became an arms race
@@user-wu6qb2xl1c and the definition of an arm race is that both sides escalate because of each other. So the police got more gear so criminals got more gear so police got more etc. I can thus conclude that police militarization caused an increase in dangerous criminals in some way.
“I turned it all down, because it feeds a mind-set that you’re not a police officer serving a community, you’re a soldier at war”. Man, that police chief was far-sighted.
Exactly, was surprised they didn’t narrate/highlight that line too.
@@khafaniking1230 In my inexpert opinion its probably because they are trying to push the narrative that the police are aggressively militarizing and i guess that they didn't want something positive like a police chief rejecting this expanded arsenal. But hey I don't have a degree in English or journalism so i could be completely wrong.
He didn't take everything that was offered, but he didn't turn everything down either. Still part of the problem
@Vengeful_Asura @Vengeful_Asura I mean it’s not really pushing imo, the trend has truth to it. My reasoning is that it probably just comes off as awkward place wise because they already stated that militarization of the police creates a different atmosphere and attitude, and then led into the availability of equipment lent to police.highlighting and narrating the rest of the quote would be like sort of briefly flip flopping, even though they do touch on how police view themselves/awareness at the end of the video. And they touch on it in the same positive positive perspective you were talking about, with a former MP and civilian policeman talking about reform.
@@khafaniking1230 Oh i completely agree, I just ment that they were "pushing the narrative" as you would say "telling the story" or as such, didn't mean to imply that they were misinforming or as such.

Um, Vox, I live in Germany and police here wear kevlar, that's not enough in America as rifle rounds go right through. Since body armor is much more available in the USA (also legal in Germany, as well as rifles but they are much harder to obtain legally) , only rifle rounds can stop perpetrators with them as most ceramic plates shrug off pistol rounds. This is why they use rifles and military equipment, to deal with the higher threats.

Yes, please do share
Here's wikipedia's TL;DR:
The Sudanese Revolution was a major shift of political power in Sudan that started with street protests throughout Sudan on 19 December 2018 and continued with sustained civil disobedience for about eight months, during which the 11 April 2019 Sudanese coup d'état deposed President Omar al-Bashir after thirty years in power, 3 June Khartoum massacre took place under the leadership of the Transitional Military Council that replaced al-Bashir, and in July and August 2019 the TMC and the Forces of Freedom and Change alliance signed a Political Agreement and a Draft Constitutional Declaration legally defining a planned 39-month phase of transitional state institutions and procedures to return Sudan to a civilian democracy.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the police actually have no legal duty to protect the people. Supreme Court made a ruling back in 2005 that the police are not required to protect nor save you. Police officers are not civil bodyguards; their job is only to enforce the law, arrest criminals, and collect revenue for the state.
