There's not a problem with the police having more equipment with varied degrees of enforcement so they can respond to threats more effectively. It's the fact that they deploy military grade equipment on the dumbest of things. You shouldn't respond in the same manner to a peaceful manifestation than to a bank assault or terroristic threats.

I mean gas is an effective tool to disperse a mob of people, but the problem is that it doesn't distinguish between a rioter and an innocent person, it can actually be even used against the police force itself. So yeah, not the best thing to bring to a protest which can involve innocent bystanders and even children and it leaves the zone unusable for an entire day. Gas is better suited in other scenarios like siege an illegal occupation, not on the streets in the middle of a protest. Thats why, have the gear, don't deploy it on every occasion, a hammer is not the best tool every time.

Italian Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza are military corps which have policing roles, but there are some marked differences between basically Squadre Radiomobili and the military battalions. Also those who are assigned to policing roles does not carry any kind of military gear, only special operations team as GIS for terroris attack or hostages situasions. I do not know if you are Italian, but I think the European way of using police is better than the American one, less violent and more efficient, also, generally speaking, police forces in Europe are seen as a good presence.
We also have militarized police in Spain but it's a matter of regulation what doesn't mean every cop looks like a mercenary. USA should really adapt force to threat

Being dutch myself; we have all of this. The Dutch were actually one of the first police forces in the world with a militarized division (Bijzondere Bijstandseenheid, today called DSI). And our riot police (Mobiele eenheid) has the same weapons as in the United States (water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets). And in the United States you will also find police officers patrolling on bicycles in major cities.

You may have missed the point. the entire entrance argument was on how the public will see things. the police which is supposed to be a protective internal group shows up to a protest looking like a militant armed force. how is anyone showing up for a peaceful protest supposed to feel okay when the police show up in riot gear (with 1 of the clips shows them sitting down and asking "why are you in riot gear")
At least American riot police are trained to give an open space for protestors to leave. I’ve seen a few videos of Russian riot police whose doctrine sort of goes like this: Disorient with water cannons Advance inwards towards the crowd Beat and grab the remaining rioters to arrest Keep beating till they all surrender. There are a lot of units in the polices and military forces. Each one uses an specific gear to an specific task. In Brazil for example, the common police is a military police.

William Adama yes!. However, the police aren't legally required to protect us (U.S. Supreme Court has said this years ago, it is case law) they enforce laws. I would argue the military defends and fights enemies; civilians are NOT the enemy. As lots of the big departments where it started in the90s still have lots of their old Military grants and now the smaller police precincts get the military goodies while the big ones buy "police equipment" directly from the military OEMs it's by now a mix out of "second hand" and "new" stuff.

If you know that unarmed people are no danger to you you hopefully won't pull a gun. But apart from that, there needs to be reconstruction from the bottom up. The 1033 program was US military passing on surplus kit that was already bought and paid for to the police for next to nothing. Not really. Many of these vandals, rioters and extremists has created a war-esque situation, which warrants a militarized and brutal crackdown by our federal authorities in order to restore peace and remove illegal elements from our country. Downsizing these aspects will only create an increase in crime, illegal activities and lawlessness which benefits the individuals who deserves it the least.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the police actually have no legal duty to protect the people. Supreme Court made a ruling back in 2005 that the police are not required to protect nor save you. Police officers are not civil bodyguards; their job is only to enforce the law, arrest criminals, and collect revenue for the state.

They use the terms "assault weapon," "automatic weapon," and "military weapons" interchangeably, and then apply those terms to both the M-16 and the AR-15. An AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle like the M-16. It is not a military weapon. It is a semi-automatic rifle (just like most hand guns are semi-automatic). It does not have select fire capabilities, and has a fixed magazine instead of a detachable box magazine. "AR" in the term "AR-15" stands for ArmaLite NOT assault rifle.

@Whited Out Carabineri is a military police aimed at serving civilians. It's not the same to have a branch of the military with normal police gear than to have the entire force be formed exclusively with military-grade equipment, both for police and troops.
I believe that in the event the US government militarizes against the people at a mass scale, the law enforcement, and the military itself would turn against the State. Never forget our constitution.

Italian Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza are military corps which have policing roles, but there are some marked differences between basically Squadre Radiomobili and the military battalions. Also those who are assigned to policing roles does not carry any kind of military gear, only special operations team as GIS for terroris attack or hostages situasions. I do not know if you are Italian, but I think the European way of using police is better than the American one, less violent and more efficient, also, generally speaking, police forces in Europe are seen as a good presence.

There are a lot of units in the polices and military forces. Each one uses an specific gear to an specific task. In Brazil for example, the common police is a military police.

I would argue the military defends and fights enemies; civilians are NOT the enemy. As lots of the big departments where it started in the90s still have lots of their old Military grants and now the smaller police precincts get the military goodies while the big ones buy "police equipment" directly from the military OEMs it's by now a mix out of "second hand" and "new" stuff.

I get the snark in your comment, but it's not really accurate. There is/was no money being exchanged here by government to private companies. The 1033 program was US military passing on surplus kit that was already bought and paid for to the police for next to nothing. This is more like an outgrowth of US warrior culture which is seeping into every facet of civilian life.

Not really. Many of these vandals, rioters and extremists has created a war-esque situation, which warrants a militarized and brutal crackdown by our federal authorities in order to restore peace and remove illegal elements from our country. Downsizing these aspects will only create an increase in crime, illegal activities and lawlessness which benefits the individuals who deserves it the least.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the police actually have no legal duty to protect the people. Supreme Court made a ruling back in 2005 that the police are not required to protect nor save you. Police officers are not civil bodyguards; their job is only to enforce the law, arrest criminals, and collect revenue for the state.
