Amazing work Cody - and cool to get to see them next to the signature primes too - they hold up really well. Still debating whether to pick some up and replace my vespids - will be getting in the B set to try at some point.
I support replacing the vespids haha thanks for watching Ed I’m always inspired by how great your videos are you really put care into delivering info to your audience
Great value kit.. Arri's clearly more neutral, sharper and more detailed in blacks and highlights as expected... dem flares on the Arles are a bit out of control lol. But I'd say 90% of people couldn't notice a difference in 90% of usage cases, most limitations only come out in the extremes. For the price... totally worth it.
Thank you for taking the time to do this test. I was just talking about doing a test like this to my friend. I like you can care less about charts. Great job on this.
Thanks so much! It’s so hard to talk about lenses without getting over technical but at the end of the day what matters most is can you use it on set and do you like the image. I think yes very much in both cases.
@@codylarosa I learned this lesson about 20+ years ago on a Cooke lens vs another lens. The other lens had sharp everything and tested great on charts. But the cooke did horrible on the charts. But the Cooke looked so much better in every way. SO from that point on. I through out charts. todays lenses are all sharp enough. I bet the Canon Sumire's do not test well. But man. They look amazing. I am probbaly going to pick a set of the Arles up by the end of the year. That new 10 lens set is on my radar now.
Very good point! We actually tested some cookes while we were here too but the light had changed pretty drastically maybe I’ll post those side by sides too. I’m really liking the unique focal lengths in set b the 40mm pretty much lived on my camera.
Nice comparison and thanks for your thoughts. They look very close to the vespids but sharper. The stills looking closer to the Arris but the focus fall off in movements is different, I like the Arri or the Tokinas more, to be fair they cost also more. The Tokina Vista primes have also a similar look, my favorites, but they cost 3 to 4 times more and are heavier, which is a issue for smaller productions.
I have not tried the Tokina vistas yet but everytime k see footage shot with them I love it and want to try them even more. Do you shoot with the vistas often?
Wow the Signatures are so very well corrected. Almost to a point where UP look like a toy (a lot of people compare Signatures to a UP progression for LF when they were released). Fun thing to note is that Signatures have different bokeh character when shot wide-open and stopped down a tad (to a 2.4 or so). It was made on purpose to add some character of someone wants it. I do own some DZO Arles and do notice it's subtle quirks here aswell (some CA on wides). They tend to hide CA in a slight out of focus areas, but it's subtle and the hue isn't bad at all (something like blue or cyan). Some people say that Arles remind them of Tokina Vista series, they def. have less contrast and pop than Arri UP, but I love it. To me they have a style of their own in terms of contrast, color rendition, flare, focus fall-off, and it's good.
I didn’t know that about the signature prime having different character when stopped down, that’s really interesting. And you make a good point that the Arles have a style of their own. For me I have such a hard time justifying any of the lower budget “cine lenses” because most of the time they look worse than something like a gmaster. However that’s not the case with the Arles there is a noticeable improvement especially in the was the lens handles focus fall off. Did you pick up a whole set of the Arles?
Hey there! I'm a one-man band, and I've heard you think the lenses I'm considering might slow me down a bit. I shoot with the FX6 and currently have the kit 24-105mm f/4 OSS lens. I'm really looking to switch things up and create a different vibe for my wedding and corporate shoots. Do you have any favorite lens brands you’d recommend? Thanks so much!
Hey! I think for run-and-gun stuff especially weddings it would be wise to invest in the holy trinity 16-35,24-70 and 70-200. I have the tamron 17-28, 28-75 and sony gmaster 70-200 with that combo I was able to film so much stuff. If I were to go back and do it over again I might have waited and saved up a little more to buy the sonys. Theyre just so sharp and super accurate colors. Kind of a boring answer but you really cant of wrong with them. Also recently I have been using the sigma 24-70 and its been really great I think its on par with sonys image but autofocus is not as great as the sonys.
in what world do people think they stack up to signatures? I tested the arles for a movie I'm shooting and found them to be meh.. typical budget lenses. Not for me
@@dp_zee Typical? How are they typical? Explain. I have used every lens on the planet. I would not say these are typical. I would say Meike are typical. But the Arles are pretty damn good for under 2k. AN comparing a 30k+ lkens to a 2k lens is silly to begin with. I would say most people on the planet coould not tell the difference from the Arles and the Supremes. A lens obsessed snob. COuld spot in a second. But the average person. No.
@@erockvaughn2190never said the average person could tell.. the average person still watches tv with smooth mode on..they are your typical budget cine lens. Not great..not bad... personally, I found the athenas to be better in this class of lens. I wasn't impressed with the arles personally
I love what the Arles can do but they are quite flat looking compared to the ARRI. I can certainly see a strong difference in contact, sharpness ad 3D volume of the subject. Shame cause I have an Arles and I think they are exceptional for the money but near perfect just can't be duplicated I guess. And flares........? Well that is obvious that the ARRI performs better there but I personally love flares so the Arles wins there for me.
This s not really a fair comparison of the flares because the flashlight died during the ARRI portion. I'm liking the Arles so much but youre right its hard to beat the perfection that ARRI offers.
Although it's an outstanding lens set but clearly when it comes to the comparison, it's too soft compared to the signature primes (judging from the focus on the eyes).
The SP's are at T1.8 while the arles are at T1.4 in this test, that's almost a full stop difference. You can even see how much shallower the focus is on the Arles, especially on the tighter lenses. I think if both were set to T2 they would probably have comparable sharpness.
@ - ARRI doesn’t show any meaningful advantage over the DZO Arles lenses. For that matter, none of these high-price lens manufacturers do. IMHO, it’s merely Hollywood-gear-nepotism.
Arles look terrible and I’m glad because now I get to spend money on something actually exciting, like a tripod or a cart…. Is what I was hoping I could say… kinda Arles really are punching way above their price point.

Flashlight died so the flare test was basically useless haha but I think the Arles are an incredible pickup for the price
Amazing DZO. The only big difference I can appreciate is how the SIgnatures colors look more neutral and balanced while Arles have a bit of Cyan.
I noticed little bit of color difference as well as sharpness. The ARRIs are so true to life but… better than real life 😅
How’s my focus? 👩🏻💻
Sharper than the Sigs good job 😘

nice...but those signatures....I can immediately tell the difference...as it shoud be.
