I didn’t know that about the signature prime having different character when stopped down, that’s really interesting. And you make a good point that the Arles have a style of their own. For me I have such a hard time justifying any of the lower budget “cine lenses” because most of the time they look worse than something like a gmaster. However that’s not the case with the Arles there is a noticeable improvement especially in the was the lens handles focus fall off. Did you pick up a whole set of the Arles?

Agreed. Cooke has a different look and I dont think its meant to be perfect and thats why people love them.

These are basically affordable cookes. It shows it with the lens flares. The arles vs the signature primes the flares were very tamed on the arri signatures vs the arles which was very bright and didn't control the flaring instead it let shine bright just like the cookes 😊

This s not really a fair comparison of the flares because the flashlight died during the ARRI portion. I'm liking the Arles so much but youre right its hard to beat the perfection that ARRI offers.

I noticed little bit of color difference as well as sharpness. The ARRIs are so true to life but… better than real life 😅

I have not tried the Tokina vistas yet but everytime k see footage shot with them I love it and want to try them even more. Do you shoot with the vistas often?

@@codylarosa Yeah I feel you on the flares! The rain bowing and pinching that they get at certain angles... so cool. From a sharpness standpoint the Arles definitely hold their own. From what I'd seen, youre really showing where they shine. I'd love to see you take on a project with the Panchro!!

Thanks so much! It’s so hard to talk about lenses without getting over technical but at the end of the day what matters most is can you use it on set and do you like the image. I think yes very much in both cases.

@@codylarosa I learned this lesson about 20+ years ago on a Cooke lens vs another lens. The other lens had sharp everything and tested great on charts. But the cooke did horrible on the charts. But the Cooke looked so much better in every way. SO from that point on. I through out charts. todays lenses are all sharp enough. I bet the Canon Sumire's do not test well. But man. They look amazing. I am probbaly going to pick a set of the Arles up by the end of the year. That new 10 lens set is on my radar now.

Very good point! We actually tested some cookes while we were here too but the light had changed pretty drastically maybe I’ll post those side by sides too. I’m really liking the unique focal lengths in set b the 40mm pretty much lived on my camera.

When I was just looking at some stills it was pretty close but as soon as thing were in motion it was pretty easy to tell.

I thought the same. But for the money and dollar for dollar. I will take 90 percent as good for 2 grand a lens.

in what world do people think they stack up to signatures? I tested the arles for a movie I'm shooting and found them to be meh.. typical budget lenses. Not for me

@@dp_zee Typical? How are they typical? Explain. I have used every lens on the planet. I would not say these are typical. I would say Meike are typical. But the Arles are pretty damn good for under 2k. AN comparing a 30k+ lkens to a 2k lens is silly to begin with. I would say most people on the planet coould not tell the difference from the Arles and the Supremes. A lens obsessed snob. COuld spot in a second. But the average person. No.

They were definitely softer than the signature primes but I’ve never thought they were noticeably soft while shooting with them.

The SP's are at T1.8 while the arles are at T1.4 in this test, that's almost a full stop difference. You can even see how much shallower the focus is on the Arles, especially on the tighter lenses. I think if both were set to T2 they would probably have comparable sharpness.

Both at the same stop would have been much more comparable, from what we’ve seen. They have similar sharpness around t4
