Ah man, was waiting for this mate. Grt review and some beautiful shots with the arles. Have started saving uo for the Athena's but this has a lot going for it but the size mainly is the kicker, as in my situation it's more 1 person doc style vids. Hopefully I can rent these out and put to use down the line, looking forward to more work with your arles set now. The GFX talking shot looked killer.
Bro, your MAVO footage always comes out so filmic.... I know you talking about the lens here.... But no lie, I had to go check my account for a minute... Great job!
I am SUPER impressed with how sharp the 14mm is on the GFX 100ii and also how much is in that sharp focus at one time. Everytime I try cine or vintage lenses something is out of focus weather it’s a hand or a nose compared to a face etc. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Sick footage in the beginning and oh yaeh .... The ARLES are amazing (Check the French city named 'Arles' for the proper pronunciation :-) Vincent van Gogh created many of his masterpieces there and praised the quality of the natural light ...)
Nice practical review with these lenses! They look super solid all around and an alternative to much more expensive glass. It'd be great to see a comparison between the DZO Arles and the Arri Signature Primes. Also it'd be interesting to see you do a review with the Cooke SP3 lenses! They are my first choice among the "budget" cinema lenses but are about double the price of the Arles.
Stunning shots! Looks so expensive. These lenses seem to fit the dynamic range of the Kinefinity really well. Believe Arles rhymes with Carl, not that it matters.
Thanks for an awesome video. Quick question: Was Thomas saying that they would be wasted on the Komodo X due to the Super 35 crop cutting out the softer focus falloff? Wondering if these are better for full frame cameras rather than Super 35?
Amazing material ! Honestly I love the falloff off of these, pondering whethere I should get a set or not...How do you think this would work on a Gimball ? Im doing a lot of gimball work and the weight of Arles is something Im a bit concerned with
Since you’ve had the DZO Arles, have you encountered any manufacturing issues? (Unusual noise, more resistant focus ring, optical defects, etc.) I’m asking because I’ve seen some people on forums mention a quality control issue, leading to a lot of after-sales service.
Yeah I left my 21mm in my cold barn. I brought it in to my house, let it warm up and there was this interesting scratching noise when turning the focus ring. That's the only lens I noticed it on. I have another video too which I'll mention this

@ Thank you for this response, because I want to buy the kit, but these few negative reviews worry me
They look sooo beautiful!! Man, how I'd love the 21, 40 and 135. Well, all of them really, but those to start. Do you have a link where we can get them with teeth for the mattebox ?🤣 Really looking forward to seeing the Arles with the Tuners.
@@CineDailies thanks - that was a joke about the false teeth taped to the matte box really ;-) What a great way to create a view from inside a mouth shot!
Awesome video man! Quick question. If you didn't have the money for the whole set, but you wanted to start with one, and then another? Which would be your #1 and #2. Thanks!!!
I know the Vespid’s were a tad warmer on the wider focal lengths. My 21 vs 40mm had a noticeable difference. I wonder if that’s the same with the Arles
sorry if i’ve commented this already, i think the comment got sent to the wrong video by accident, anyways; is it possible for you to do a more in depth comparison of image quality between the Nisi athenas and the dzo arles. i curious to see if the extra money is worth it, or if i should just use filters and post to soften things when needed?
Any thoughts on the comparison between Arles and Cooke SP3s?? I can't find ANYTHING on the SP3's but they seem amazing. Wondering if its worth the price difference though.
I haven't had the change to use the sp3s. I actually have no real interest. Its sad they don't come in PL and there inconsistent designs is a little annoying
@@CineDailies another question. Taking into consideration that the xh2s has a cropped sensor, how would the image turnout if I use a step up ring to use a 82mm filter in these lenses (which I believe have 86mm filter threads). Would the crop eliminate the dark part of the stepup ring?
Yeah I use the lidar pro on about 80% of the shots. The opening shot of me walking towards the boxer was the lidar. It has been VERY useful for shots I can't normally pull when I'm camera opting or with no 1st AC .
I touched a Arles lens at B&H the other day and the focus wheel had this "clicking" sound. Similarly to aperture 1/3rd stops on some manual lenses. Was this a single lens issue or is this what it sounds like on the Arles? Thanks for the great vid!!!
Love every DZO lens I've ever tried. What really interested me in this video is that it appears these lenses easily cover the Fuji GFX format... meaning: this could be an incredible set of lenses for the new 65mm Black Magic 17k cine cam. Wonder what the full coverage is of the Arles...
These focal length choices for the closeups are pretty wide. It feels so distorted like a 0.5 selfie or Ernest goes to camp. it doesnt put the best foot forward showcasing how cinematic these lenses are. Just my opinion.
That comes down to grading. I left most of these clips with just a rec 709 conversion. Didn't really add contrast back in. And its actually easier to work with lower contrast lenses than it is with lenses with heavier contrast from my experience
That mountain running flare was beautiful
Love the bloom but that orb got me 😅
Before we go any further, I only have one thing to say. These shots are gorgeous 😍. This is why I love watching your work
Thank you so much 😀
I will start with a set of 3. Wow that Arles 14mm on the GFX is no joke
Its WIDE haha
So which 3 are you picking?

Hahah yeah man ppl be SLEEPING on the Mavo
I think these lenses on the tuners might be the new low budget meta!
Great review, thank you.
D
I believe it will be!!
Has anyone done tests on the Arles and the Module 8 tuners yet? I really want to see the K35 tuner on them
@ working on it. Check the community page. I asked for questions about that setup
Just ordered the 40mm. Looking forwards to experimenting with it and seeing how it looks irl. Solo crew!

Thanks Tobias! And I agree they do fit really well together. And that's a helpful way to remember!

Great combination with the mavo

I agree

hows the gfx as an a cam? the footage looks amazing

I know the Vespid’s were a tad warmer on the wider focal lengths. My 21 vs 40mm had a noticeable difference. I wonder if that’s the same with the Arles
this isn’t a major concern if you are matching and grading the footage. ya know?
What about the 25mm vespid and the 40mm ? Do those 2 match better ?

If you could only afford 1 length, which would you go for (for documentary & commercial work)? I currently have a 35-80 catta ace
