Thanks for that. recently learning the timer framing stuff, hoping that one day I can build one for my family by myself.

I didn't know that post and beam meant fastened with metal as opposed to actual joinery.i just assumed the two terms were interchangeable. Thank you

That's because it doesn't! The terms ARE interchangeable.

This video is only half right. The part of post and beam is a fail. Russia has some of the oldest true post and beam structures in the world.

A timber frame is just that a timber frame. There are many types of construction used in making timber frames. Like mortise and tenon, post and beam, post frame, and balloon framing all used to make a timber frame. So a timber frame is not just mortise and tenon construction. It is any building framed with timbers. They can't even tell the difference between post and beam using only wood vs post frame construction using steel brackets in this video. And actually post and beam is stronger than mortise and tenon. A post and beam all the wood is supported not just a tenon and small lip or shoulder. I have built many different timber frames and the post and beam took the longest because of saddle notches and vertical tenons.

2:20 sorry to say but you are a bit wrong here. As a carpenter from Germany we learned all that old stuff in trade school. I have made so many mortises (usually 4-5 inch long, 2.5deep, 1.5 wide) with only a wooden hammer and a big chisel that I can say for sure that it is by far faster for an experienced wood worker to make it without a drilling tool. A few decades ago carpenters here were paid by piecework, not hourly wages. And per each hour, 10 mortises were calculated, 1 in 6 minutes. And yes, that is possible, especially in the wet wood they used back then.
After all you might not be absolutely wrong, there isn't just one way of doing it, but considering the effort and cost of a chisel and a hand drill and keeping the tools in use sharpened, I would conclude that the chisel only method would be way more efficient.
Great video, interesting topic. 👍 From Germany!

He is right. I use a chainsaw and slick. Around 6-8 minutes for tenon or mortise. On post and beam it's around 40 minutes to scribe saddles and make a tenon. Doing the lincoln log notches on post and beam is quicker but not a quick as mortise and tenon.

the answer is post and beam is more afordable, timber frame is astronomically more expensive

Is timber framing or post and beam more affordable? Or are they relatively the same?

Timber framing is more expensive. I wish I could afford it.

Hi, if we raise square frames 5 by 3 meters with thickness and width of boards 5 by 30 cm, (for building a cube cabin by conecting then these frames), would the lap joints of the frames be stronger with bolts or screws? And would there be necesary for extra corner strengthening triangular bars ? ( the cabin is planed to be made with 10 such frames with a distance of 70 cm in between, conected with 70 cm pieces of the same board)

No draw boring for the peg?

This is your answer from Carolina Builders. "Thanks for the question. Although the timber frame display was not drawbored, driving a tapered peg through intentionally off-set holes is a centuries old practice that we think should be revived".

timber fraiming is beautiful but not as cheap and lasts as long as standard framing, this should have been a compairison of the two.

  • @cromaticdragon5079
    @cromaticdragon5079 2 года назад +1

The cost of timberframe should any of it be exposed to the elements and practicality all have some exposure is a never ending cycle of maintenance that is NOT inexpensive or can be easily done by the owner necessitates a contractor to perform it at frequent intervals around 8-9 years...translation major $$$$.
I know I was going that route before factoring in that expense atop normal monthly expenses, so unless your loaded and enjoy throwing money away stay away from timberframe and log homes, nothing about them is build it and your done.

So instead of creating content you just ripped someone else's content with a sloppy screen capture?

This was a cooperative venture with their company. I hope you enjoyed the content.

I think the video would really benefit from that being clearly outlined then, because there's a lot of bootleg and screen grabbed content being reposted on RUclips. This content feels like that, even if it's not :/

The original interview contained more than 30 questions I thought would be of interest to this audience. Because of that they spent a Saturday doing the video concisely. It fit both our channels. This has provided great exposure for them as it has gotten thousands of views. My relationship started when I asked permission to use a photo that appears in another video. You might enjoy that one also. Here's the link
