How to Build a Greenhouse | Post and Beam

  • Make your own Post & Beam Greenhouse with twin wall polycarbonate glazing and a poured concrete foundation. This timber frame style Western Red Cedar post & beam greenhouse has a base that's 10 feet by 12 feet. I cover all the carpentry and construction of this garden greenhouse starting with excavation, making the concrete forms and pouring the foundation. Then I move on to cutting, notching, and preparing the posts, beams, ties, and rafters. Followed by the assembly of the post and beam frame. Then I cut and install the twin wall polycarbonate glazing and install it on the walls and roof. There's also some custom cedar louvered vents and a fan for air circulation. Then I build and install a light-weight cedar door and finish the construction with a two part ridge cap for the roof. There will be a four part detailed follow up video series after this. I have a 14 page greenhouse plan that's available at the link below.

    As a contractor with over 40+ years of building experience myself, I must say, I am impressed with your build of this greenhouse. You've done an excellent job, and for a small greenhouse, it is not only very well built, it's beautiful as well. Your use of lap joints, dado's, handmade louvered vents, and all the other building methods used, including the use of stops and such, even the hand made forms for pouring the concrete foundation, would make anyone believe you were an experienced master builder. In this build, I see better building methods being utilized than in most of the homes today that people actually live in. End result is a gorgeous, functional greenhouse that will last for many years. Great job!

      Using beams was such a great start! Why making the greenhouse so banal in the end with plastic siding and redundant 2 x 4s? You are using two opposed building approaches. Okay, it’s relatively cheap and quick to put together. Then why not go 100% cheap and convenient? Because going halfway gutsy doesn’t cut it: it’s fake. And on a softer note, ‘roof fasteners’ (fasteners integrating an EPDM washer) dry out in no time and leak. That becomes a maintenance issue and, etc, etc…

    You’re easily my favorite builder! I love the detail in your workmanship with the post and beam building technique that is rarely utilized anymore and I love the detail you always provide us learners. This structure is gorgeous, strong and it’ll last decades if not a century or more. Question, I like the concrete surround with gravel interior, especially for the purpose of a green house. I live in sw KS, where it’s pretty much a cold desert in the winter. We do get below freezing but it’s only occasional, you mentioned your mild winters but I’m unsure if I could pull off the same base? For reference the last month it’s been cool to cold, usually it stays warm to hot till mid/late fall. Anyways it seems like a long lasting base, great work as always and so grateful you posted another build

    When you don't use rafter ties (cathedral ceilings like this) the ridge board acts as a load bearing member and is referred to as a ridge beam instead of ridge board. The reason that is important: a ridge board is just a nailing surface that lets you attach the rafters, but the beam itself doesn't experience load. If you don't use rafter ties, then you need to factor in that the ridge beam is supporting about 1/3rd of the weight of the roof (and snow load). It supports this at both ends. So, you need to size the beam and end posts to accommodate that weight. The way you've designed this, the ridge beam has no end support and the connection in the middle is not adequate for load bearing. I'm sure this will be fine because of the short distances involved, but it's not the right way to do it.

    • @MANaboutTOOLS
      @MANaboutTOOLS  Год назад

      Thank you for your comment. The ridge beam is supported by the framing at the gable ends. And there is a rafter tie in the middle of the structure.

    • @notmyname9876
      @notmyname9876 Год назад

      Your video shows that each end of the ridge beam has a vent under it, not a support post. Are you saying that 2x4 frame you made is providing structural support? Also, section R802.5.1 of the building code covers ceiling joists (which is the same thing as a rafter tie), and has a span table with spacing. All of that assumes you use a rafter tie at every rafter, not just one for the whole structure. If you go back and add rafter ties (in the bottom third of the rafter) and collar ties (in the top third of the rafter) then the ridge will just act like a nailing surface and not like a structural beam. In that case, the connection you made in the middle would be fine, since it's not actually holding any of the weight. It's a small shed, so build it however you want. I was just pointing out that this is not correct from a building code point of view. 1/3rd of the weight of the roof will be supported by that beam, and it's only held together with some brackets in the middle and a couple of 2x4s on the sides. I hope you don't get a lot of snow.
