- Wanting to know how to vintage fade a t-shirt? In this video, I go over the steps to fade your clothes to have that vintage style. This process is a lot faster than trying to sun fade and can be done simply at home. Check out this video to turn a regular shirt into a vintage look.
What's needed:
- Bleach
- Water
- A washing machine
- 1/8th of a cup measuring cup

After trying this method, I can give everyone here a definitive response. The method is absolutely sound and this dude has probably browned a few tees before getting it right. The proportions are absolutely key here. Be sure to measure no more than an 1/8th of a cup per 1000 ml of water. I tested with a 1/4 of a cup per 1000 ml and it was too much, t-shirts were getting the slight brown tinge after washing. When using 1/8 cup of bleach, the t-shirt fades to a more naturally faded black and the key is repetition. Do repeated washes with 1/8 cup of bleach until the tee is faded to your taste. I have ruined 2 t-shirts using slightly too much bleach to discover the correct method. Use 1/8 cup of bleach per 1000 ml, rinse and repeat to taste. 👌😊
Hey whats up brotha! Had a question, if I wanna wash more than one shirt do I follow this formula? 1000ml per shirt + 1/8ths cup of bleach per shirt? So If I want 5 shirts it’ll be 5000ml + 1/8th cups 5 times?
thank you!!
Hey what do u reckon for 350 gsm hoodie
Just tried this today and it worked perfectly. I used a brand new black graphic t from Target. Added 1/8 cup of bleach to my top load washer, let it fill up, then added the shirt and made it cycle for an hour. Ran it through the dryer as usual. Thank you!!
@Aaaa where did you put the bleach in your top load? In the little compartment that says bleach or just in the washer part where you put clothes?
what kind of load size setting did u do?
Did you set it for a large load or a small load???
Straight to the point, no messing around, great video!! :D
1 year later and this works like a charm. i thrifted a vintage snoop dog tee and it was almost close to perfect but it didnt have nearly the amnt of fade that i wanted. did this trick and it looks INSANE! bless!
Probably not real vintage
@@def257 single stitched, tags and everything… it was vintage lol had a fade just wanted more

The brown colour is because some "black" dyes are just really really dark brown (some blacks are actually really dark blue instead). Pigments are different and often based on price. Unless you know for sure what dye was used just do a small test on a concealed part of the fabric with 100% bleach and a small drop or even spray using a toothbrush and flicking it on to see what colour the dye actually is and how it might turn out.
Wrong, this response is borne of failed attempts at dyeing with bleach. The quantity of bleach used in term of proportion of water and repetition is key to getting the fade right.
It worked! Thank you!
It worked on my colored shirt!!! It was a plain gray. Not the athletic gray type. Thank you!
Another easy way to do this is to just wear the shirt all the time for about 20 - 30 years
Definitely
That's how I faded most of mine!
You need 20-30 years for the easy way?
I done mine by leaving it out in hot sunshine & pour over plain boiling hot water & allow to dry in the sun & repeat process. Takes time but I’ve got good results in the end
@@133taxi ty going to try!
Thank you so much!! I am working on making my own band shirt and want it to look faded and worn
thanks for the video, 2 things I would add: 1) how much water the washing machine is using is crucial. if you're on a large load setting where there's twice as much water as the small setting, the ratio of water to bleach is going to obviously be completely different. 2) using hot water instead of cold will definitely make a difference, bleach works faster in hot water. Hope that helps someone. Oh and I would recommend showing the finished product in the intro to the video.
personally, i ended up using an 8th of a cup (roughly) of bleach in a mop bucket for a bout 10 minutes and it did the job. make sure to keep the garment submerged by putting something heavy on it if necessary and move it around every couple minutes so it doesn't get spotty.
@@gepettowins How much water did u use with the bleach. Also did u let it hang dry straight after, or did u wash it once before drying.
@@michaelhwong664 i dunno, probably like 2 gallons? I would wash it once before drying for sure, or it'll smell pretty bleachy and might irritate your skin.
@@gepettowins great vid, but how big of a wash load though? The ratio of bleach to water is dif in a small load and large load. Thanks man
@@ThuroTypeMusic it's not my video but I personally used a small load after I dunked my garment in the bleach/water bucket. that's my whole thing about doing the bleaching in a bucket instead of the wash, because everyone's washing machine is different. I just use the washing machine to rinse it after I bleach It in a bucket
I thought most of the time when browning occurs its due to the way the cotton was originally dyed?
I have a front loader. When I pour the mixture (water and bleach) into the drum it disappears. Is that normal?
Dude you rock! I've been using too much bleach and it's been turning my shirts brown. This video is so much better than these pinterest women that will show you how to do all this stuff but won't show you the finished product. Well done, my friend! Much love from the US!
Glad that it helped! The bleach quantity is a very fine line.
direct sunlight 👍👍💯
I’m going to do the 1/8th cup on full cycle hot water then directly to dryer high heat because I want to shrink the shirt as well. Does anyone know if this will have adverse bleaching effect? Or still just the right amount ?
Have you done this by handwash? Not sure 1 tee in a washer makes sense for me but curious
my washer has a conduit to the pipe do i still put the water in the washer or what do i even do
can you do multiple at once?
Thanks troy siwan
If i do this method for lets say 30 shirts, will i just multiply the measurements to 30?
Help!! It's not working for me. My machine detects the water bleach solution and drains it before starting the washing cycle. What should I do???
How do I do this with a front loading machine that drains as soon as I put any liquid in the drum?
Does this method work with coloured T-shirt’s as well??
I just seen your videos and I was going to ask you can you help me learn how to make vintage shirts I’ve always wanted to learn I’ve watched channels of them explaining it but I think It would be better if I had someone to guide me until I’m able to do it by myself
does it affect the ink?
Will this work for other dark colours too?
Great video, straight and to the point. Thanks for sharing. How do you think this method would look on a charcoal gray t shirt instead of straight black? Have you tried it?
Thanks! I haven't tried it however you should still see fading on a charcoal tee.
wonder if you could do this by hand with a bucket of water for better coverage.
Can this work on any color shirt?
does this work on white t shirts if i just wanna fade the graphic
About to try this on my carhartt jacket
Let us know how it went!
please let me know how it was!
Can you used this process for all colors Ie: red, blue, yellow, green, & etc????? Please respond ASAP
Does it work with embroidery tees?
It was only 1 liter of water inside the washing machine, or did it add more water?
bro dipped after making this
Id love to fade a king sided bedspread (it's thin). How can I do this??
Can i do this with 15 shirts at once ? And can i do it on colors like red and blue ?
Hi chad, Great vid btw i just wanna ask how did you clean your washing machine after?
I appreciate that! There shouldn't be any traces of bleach left at the end of the cycle as most washers completely drain and clean themselves. If you're hesitant you can always just do an empty quick wash circle to make sure its completely flushed.
Old video but if I do this to multiple shirts at once do I still use an 8th of a cup of bleach?
Hey great content ! by anychance do you know whats the equivalent of 1/8 of a cup in cl? in europe we don't have the same measures thanks in adavance!
It’s about 30mL, so 3 cl
yeah i found it
How would you use this method on more than 1 shirt at a time? Like what if I wanted to throw in a bunch? Thanks for the cool video.
Definitely possible! Just make sure that you're going a long enough cycle. I'd probably still stick with 1/8th of a cup of bleach to be safe and repeat the process as many times as you need. Don't try to rush it as you don't want the brown colouring to occur.
@@ChadCowan so i can do abt 3-5 or more shirts with 1/8 of bleach and 1 litre of water ?
@@ChadCowan and do i just use bleach or colour bleach
Where did you get that Nautica sweatshirt

will this work on white shirts?
Will this work without washing machine?
Have you ever done this with a chamois shirt?
Would it work with pants to?
HELP! there´s one thing I dont get, my washing machine adds water after weighing the clothes and then starts washing, does this means I need to add more bleach than the 1/8 of a cup ? or is this the right way to do it? or do I need to avoid the process of adding extra water after weighing the clothes and go straight to the washing process? PLS HELP
I'd recommend still starting with 1/8 of a cup. If you find that its not doing anything after the first wash, you can try adding more bleach at your own risk.
Would this work on vibrant color tee's. Such as a shirt that consists of many colors?
Should do
wonder if i can do this with loads of clothes?
Do you use color safe bleach?
Is pouring the mixture of bleach and water different from putting it into the built in dispenser cartridge of the machine?
I'd recommend putting it straight into the barrel as some machines slowly dispense from the dispenser. Plus most dispensers may struggle to fit over 1 litre of liquid.
I found that if I put in barrel my front loader detected it and drained it out before the wash so I had to put it in dispenser but I would defo soak the shirt first in water before putting in as helps even coverage
I’m f you happen to see this…does it also soften the fabric??
I can’t stand the real thick heavy material some t-shirts have. Thank you!
Can you put multiple tee shirts inside of a washer at once?
Yeah you shouldn't have any issues doing that
Would this work on a custom printed shirt or just store bought shirts?
Two questions. Will this work on jeans or corduroy pants? Also, can I do multiple shirts at the same time?
Did you try? I have just put 2 shirts in at once but I personally wouldnt do more than that or if its a big garment do on own as you want to avoid bunching otherwise you will get bleech marks/inconsistent coverage

Do you recommend me using more bleach for a blanket since it is larger? Or just repeating that steps with 1/8 cup?
Hi Brittany, Using 1/8th of a cup is definitely the safer option. Perhaps test with 1/4 of a cup on a different blanket to see the results if you have that option available.
wait.. your trying to make a blanket looks fade ? thats new
@@irfanasyraf5730 I'm dyin! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Can you name the product you used?
Might be a dumb question but do I put the mixture inside of the washing mashing drum with the clothes or the compartment where I would normally put detergent
What did u end up doing lol
Not a dumb question! I’m still looking for this answer lol
Can this work on other color clothes, white, beige, purple etc.?
it depends on ur fabric
White? Lol
any tips on how to fade a bright orange shirt? done this technique twice now but it still looks as bright as it did before and iam slightly scared i'll ruin it if i put in more bleach. please help
maybe try sun fading instead? the channel william brilliams has a video on it that seems to work pretty well on a red sweater
Have you tried this method with anything made of linen or wool or other fabrics (besides cotton)? I have a linen sport coat I'd like to try and fade a little.
bleach will damage wool since it's a protein fiber, but linen can handle it
Tried this but it just made a big brown blotch on my Black Sabbath shirt 😢. Followed the directions to a T too.
Does the bleach mess up the graphic at all?
I think it will depend on the quality of the shirt. I have 2 cheap fake band shirts bought from China that I have put in now so will let you know how it turns out.
Does anyone know if you can use a bucket or in a bath instead of a washing machine if you don't have one?
Yes use a bath filled with really warm water and use same amount of bleach mixed in bath thoroughly. Add your clothing soak in bath for 20 mins you will see colour coming off then put in wash. Wouldn’t recommend leaving for longer than 20 incase it browns. Better to do multiple trys than fucking it up first time. Let me know how it goes :)
Is the process the same for vintaging a white shirt? Only asking because the bleach is obviously going to affect a white shirt differently than black
I've never tried it mate. Maybe try it on a scrap white t-shirt to see the effects first. Let me know how you go!
Anyone tried this on coloured tees? I’ve got a bright red one that I’d like to fade a bit, it’s a Gildan heavy cotton tee.
wow. i‘m having the same dilemma. bright red/orange Gildan shirt (i just wanted to know, maybe we bought the same shirt. i bought some Post Malone merch and there’s this longsleeve shirt that looked like it had normal orange/red color but when i recieved the shirt, the orange was allot pinker and it looks very neon) anyways, the shirt i bought has some really cool writings and pictures in black and i don’t want to lose those designs. Have you tried this out?
how did the color turn out?
did you lose some designs or have they faded?
i would be very grateful if you would see this and help me out
Can you do this with a t-shirt that has a screen printed design?
The one he's done in the video is on a screen printed tshirt
does this work on other pieces of clothing too? i want to fade my hoodie but it’s larger so i don’t know if i need more bleach for ir
Did you try it?
@@seanadamson7260 nah, looking at it again its good with just the fading from use that it’s gotten
Wondering if this will work on a hoodie and if it’ll mess up the embroidery
Hey! This should definitely work on a hoodie. It won't damage the embroidery any more than a normal wash however it could slightly impact the colour. If you have a different embroidered item that you don't care about, maybe see what it does to the thread colour on that item first.
@@ChadCowan will look into it appreciate lookin out 🙏🏼
Can you do 2 shirts at the same time? Do you add more bleach or the same?
Just trying this. Will let you know
I’m very unsure about your process as when you turn on any washing machine the first thing the machine does is drain. So the water you have put in the machine gets pumped out in a matter of seconds.
But I appreciate your advice and will give this a go.

not all machines do that
Could always fill up your washer first. Then add the bleach/water mixture and then add the shirt. I’ve seen other people do that method
Do you think you’d be able to do this process with multiple tshirts at once?
yes i’ve tried it
So you did two cycles both with 1/8th cup?
the second cycle he did less than 1/8th
Does this work for white shirts or does the bleach not affect it bc, you know, it’s white
Are you slow…
Y did you have to put water in ur washer
It works but I overdid the bleach and now my Beyonce shirt is gray
Does it work on polyester?
Yeah you shouldn't have any issues.

One recommendation: don’t air dry your shirts by hanging them upside down like that. It’ll cause the side to droop.
Thanks for the tip Joshua!
How would you dry it?
@@daniellloyd1801 regular clothes hangers probably would be best?

do you know if i can use chlorine free bleach?
I don't think it would be as effective.
Would it work on military cammies?
Will this work on white shirts?
This process works because the bleach lightens the dyed BLACK shirt but since there is little to no dye in WHITE shirts, it is unsure whether it would work or not.
@@user-hh9jc9hs8f but will it work on a white t shirt if i just wante to fade the graphic

just wear your shirts and sweat in them you won't get a sick fade without the body liquids and sweat

have anyone tried this with multiple shirts in one wash ?
yes! From time to time Iam washing like 5-6 Shirts at once. using the recommended 30 mL of Bleach in 1L of water. Depending on the brand of the shirt I have to repeat the process up to 4 times until I see a good result

Too much bleach
bro sorry but i cant hear u clearly cuz of your Accent.. Thats my bad but so how much times do you need to wash it in normal speed?

I'd recommend doing your wash for at least about an hour. That should be plenty of time for the bleaching to be an even spread. Hope that helps.
