  • There are hundreds of recognized dog breeds around the world, and in Canada alone, there are hundreds of different vehicles available. There's also a vast assortment of lifestyle, location, and budget questions to consider when you combine those two things. For dog owners in all walks of life, the family canine certainly factors into the purchase decision of that new or second-hand ride in many different ways.
To help you out, Justin Pritchard - our Northern Correspondent - will walk you through some of the things you should take into consideration, starting with Ghost, his seven-year-old golden retriever, and sharing some of his favourite rides. And yes, Ghost is a good boy who has loved car rides ever since his first one - though he gets a little freaked out by certain types of running boards, for some reason.

Wagons are surely a great option for a few dogs with regards to jumping height if you dont want a van. I am currently transporting my 120 lb and 50 lb dogs in a 2016 Subaru Levorg GT-S. You get all the awesomeness of a WRX in wagon form. With the back seats up there is enough room for short trips, and with the back seat down they have more than enough room, I would say comfortably 4-5 dogs of 60-70lbs no worries. I think it was somewhere around 1400 litres of space with the seats down, so not too shabby.

4 dogs, 2 huskies and 2 border collies; Hyundai Santa Fe and it's great for all four. Trailer hitch also means towing ability!

I prefer to have my dog (s) in crates. I’m still driving my 1999 Toyota Sienna and took out the middle seats-wish they folded flat into the floor. I worry about dogs getting loose in an accident plus I got locked out once when one hopped in the front and locked the door.

I have to say, my old Border Collie, would ride in a dump truck is I gave her leg up. As long as she can get up into it, she just doesn't care.

I have 3 dogs. 2 love to take turns putting their head between the front seats to get pets and look out the front, and one wants her head out the window. So if I get and SUV, hybrid, wagon, I need the seat to lay completely flat in the back. I love the Toyota FJ cruiser because the back window can be open but they can't jump out and the others can still put their head in between the seats. The keep everything laid down throw some large dog beds and blankets in the back, and the vehicle can go any place. Plus the surfaces are all plastic so you can literally hose it out!

An '08 Fusion. Rust is adding lightness. Awesome beater. The seats seem to made of dog fur, no f***s given. Passenger airbag deactivates if she jumps to the front seat. Dog head out the window score is huge, depending on the wind and your dogs skull speed. Rated skull speed affects the dogs phrf.

I know this is showing good dog cars. The Hondas I can vouch for are good since seats fold completely down. I am surprised that no one had crates for their dogs or at least a seatbelt and harness in case of sudden stops or accident.
