- Hatchbacks provide maximum practicality in a small package, with a combination of efficiency and a reputation for driving enjoyment
Aside from obvious advantages like cargo flexibility and overall utility, the modern hatchback has some often-overlooked attributes. They tend to be easier to park. In most cases the hatch is shorter than its sedan counterpart and the driver can see the D-pillars, which gives a visual reference - a plunging trunk lid line often means the corners of a sedan go unseen. They also have more rear seat headroom because of the longer, flatter roofline, and if you ask us, that also leads to superior looks, whether in practical econobox trims or spicy hot-hatch flavours. Here are Driving’s five picks for best hatchbacks. All start at under $30,000 (except for our honourable mention) and come with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and the key safety features unless otherwise noted.

Honda looks to be perfect in these cars.. with practicality and the budget.
With a troublesome CVT that nobody wants in the used market. Select wisely.
I want a hatchback so bad but gas mileage doesn't seem great. And I'm trying to prepare for those high gas prices in future. Ugh I hate car shopping. Edit: oh lovely now the car market is trash. Yaaayyyyy. Of course I didn't have money last year to buy but now I do and everything is over priced. Even 2010 cars. Pisssseeeddd.
What do you mean? Hatchbacks are much more gas efficient than crossovers and SUVs.
Hatchbacks are more mpg.
Lol. The Honda civic 1.6 I-Dtec does 3.5l/100km easy
Look at buying an used 2021-22 Honda or Corolla.
How is the Bolt affordable starting at $45k? Same goes for the Mazda 3 which has the highest starting price in its segment and the least amount of space. Not practical or affordable
That's why I picked up an used 2021 (in 22) Subaru Impreza hatchback sport in an manual 5. The quality and build plus the handling and 54' cubic feet with the rear seats folded down made it totally worth it at $22,000......🏹🤠👍
How can you leave out civic and Corolla.
You lose all your credibility by including the Mini in a best affordable hatchback comparo. Everyone on earth knows they are garbage cans. Cute looking and fun to drive sure, the rest is a shit sandwich. Nightmare reliability and expense off warranty.
😂 I agree mini complete garbage
I have an Subaru Impreza sport hatchback in manual transmission. The quality handling and cargo space plus original costs makes it an winner in my book.....🏹🤠👍
New Hyundai i10 grand nios is best in segment because it has more leg room at the rear passenger seat, good looking interior, it as more features than the other cars in this segment, engine is quiet refined and smooth. It has exciting features like wireless charging first in the segment, rear AC vents and many more. It is also the best city car and stable in highways. Value for money package. (India).
Bhai Canada ki cars ka review hai ye..
Can't wait for the upcoming Corolla GS-R
Which one gets the best milage?
The prius is the greatest practical hatchback for me
Guess I will go and hunt me a mazda 3
but what about ford focus 2018
Well ppl got too fed up with 2012 to 2016 Ford focus and fiesta's auto transmission fuck up. I myself wouldn't look in the direction of Ford anytime soon ( mind you they started production with the knowledge of the dual dry clutch and didn't even compensated much for their mistake. Bunch of assholes!
I cant believe Alfred is now reviewing vehicles on RUclips
Seems odd to me that I worked an entire career and am now retired and Graeme Fletcher, Brad Diamond, Jim Kenzie and Bill Gardiner were and still are the official new car talky faces of the great white north through the entire process. Seems like these dudes have been doing this for 40 years now, though I see that MotoringTV actually "only" started in 1987, the year I graduated from Engineering school. These guys have been doing this for soo long that they are now actually selling electric cars which are a status symbol with the POSER class, and I have very limited options for the next manual transmission CO2 emitter that I am planning for myself. How crazy is all that ...?
Utterly useless information.
depends on what info you're looking for
Electric cars no sound...who would ever imagine such crap from a purely car purest view. Don't care about torque from electric cars. The sound with torque of a naturally aspirated car that's missing. Apple play bla bla bla...
well your average gas car doesn't even make that sound anymore, unless there's an issue with the exhaust lol. Keep paying for your expensive gas, old man!
