  • Back to oils! For this week we're going back to painting with oils, but we're going to ease into it! We're going to use a variation of a Zorn palette, where we replace the saturation accent that is available through the use of cad red with an earth red. My choice is Terra Rosa, but any red ochre is totally fine, so mars red, Indian red, Venetian red they're all good! Granted there are small differences between them but what we're trying to do by using an earth red is to produce a far more harmonious tonal palette, albeit a less saturated one. So our aim for this week, where we welcome back our lovely oil paint, is to push that palette as much as we can and explore the possibilities that are available to us. Today we're painting awesome fellow painter Tom Croft @tomcroftartist (who is promoting a wonderful initiative so please be sure to check it out #portraitsfornhsheroes ), and we're taking full advantage of the idea of distortion. By distortion I don't mean representing someone in a cool style, I mean the manipulation of form and color to exalt moments in our perception that move us. It's about giving into the stimulus provided by the manner in which we perceive nature, and finding practical ways to express this with clarity in paint. For this week we're going to be recording a small palette (or let's call it mixing area) right next to the painting, so be sure to check our RUclips channel if you're interested in seeing the palette alongside the painting.

It's great to be able to watch you mix and pick paint from your palette and apply it to your painting. More of this, please.

Como aprecio tu honestidad! Aire fresco! me siento mucho mejor luego de ver tu paleta y la forma en que mezclas tus colores! Algunos maestros me gritaron por mis "messiness"!- How can you navigate such a messy, muddy palette! -No tienes ni idea todo lo que aprendemos de vos! Gracias!

Thank you for continuing to do these. I look forward to watching them throughout the day while I work at home for my graphic design job, and push to do more artwork after my "work" work. Every view is a personal connection, and you guys are doing great, generous things.
    Also hell yeah puddles.

YES we finally get to see your palette!! It actually makes me feel better about myself - I instinctively tend towards puddles of mud too and I always feel bad because it's not "proper" or whatever...but now I feel good about it! And I got to tell you, it is nice going back to a muted, earthy palette after all the high-chroma. I'm very excited for this week's theme, thank you :)

🙋🏻‍♀️my palette is all mudd too. No matter how big my surface is I’m a messy painter for sure. But my brain almost is used to it

oh my, thank you for telling us about using non absorbent paper as a palette. I hate to clean my palette when using oil especially because I paint in my kitchen and I have a little toddler always sneaking around :)

I don’t understand how you are able to resist the temptation to have more contrast, like the nose for example. Minimal value shifts for the center of the painting yet still draws my attention to it. Amazing work as always 👍

If holbein acrylic gouache is difficult to find in your area I've heard that golden matte fluid acrylics are a good substitute.

Excellent tutorial! I truly love your semi-realistic style! Question: Am I correct in -resuming that you gessoed your paper before painting? What kind of paper did you do this on?

Hi, I was hoping you could help me out with some tips on sketching. I believe you need to be able to draw well before painting. Or any books you would recommend ? Thanks
