- Julián. Today we speak about a wonderful quality in Art which is to find possibility, to discover kinship in the strangest places. At first glance it may seem like a portrait is supposed to be portrait, only a portrait, and be constructed upon all the experiences gathered thru the history of portraiture. But for today's painting, my mind was immediately transported to one of the best examples of abstract expressionism - Robert Motherwell. It's very unlikely that in the 1960's and 70's one could genuinely generate bonds between a small somewhat naturalist portrait and a large abstract painting; they were seen as having two very differing natures. But today we're able to step back and realize that we're not bounding by underlying philosophies or manifestos that butted heads with each other. So even if it sounds strange I don't think this little portrait would be if it wasn't for the lessons learned from Motherwell's Elegies. The white, ochre and black masses echo those ovals and rectangular gestural shapes that mother well so masterfully painted. Time has given us the ability to understand painting's oscillating nature and even though it is absolutely expected that we show gravitation towards specific works of art, it is hard to understand why we would promote or choose to become dogmatic about painting. When we choose to only experience one manner of painting, we're also sacrificing everything that has to be gained from all the paintings that we've consciously decided to shut out. This doesn't mean that we literally have to paint in the manner of every school of thought that has inhabited painting history, that would be absurd. But we can choose to broaden our minds and learn from those experiences, even if they differ from our own efforts. That way, Motherwell can instruct us how to paint Julián. (Gracias por dejarme pintarte Julián!!!)

Thank you for being the voice of integrity in a world that seems to be trying to force so many of us as artists to take into consideration things that have nothing to do with our inspiration and our craft, like "will it sell?", "will people like it?" Thanks for reminding us just to paint.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ hermoso retrato Nico, estaba deseando que fuera esa foto, no lo puedo creer
Fantastic work again 😁
This is my new favorite! I love the colors, the angle, the composition, that hair! 👏
“ If we as human beings have decided to do this...let’s just pay attention. Maybe in the painting that these people are doing...we’re going to see things that we have never conceived, that we never thought possible, because we were busy thinking in parameters...very specific parameters. What they did was amazing!” (9:52) ❤️❤️❤️
In light of what the message of today’s entire talk was about...I’m going to choose TWO quotes...because I don’t HAVE to pick just one if I don’t want to. ☺️ Too many excellent things said today to pick just one. - “It’s not like my brain is telling me, ‘You have to pick sides...you have to...you have to...you have to...because I don’t. It is my choice not to. It is my choice to enjoy painting...to enjoy everything that painting has to offer.’” (13:30)❤️❤️❤️
I absolutely love everything you said here, even if I dont feel moved by a painting I choose to not disrespect the artist or say that they are bad or should not be allowed to paint, I hear that often from both sides about why the other side is wrong and it's just art everyone is allowed to like what they like
The more tools (skills) I can acquire, the more I can express my creative ideas. I value my traditional instruction. Like you I value the lessons each style of art can offer.

Well I'm putting you in my blender
I love your paintings and love hearing about your thoughts on painting and everything. Really fantastic. I do have a technical question about the yupo "paper" do you prime it with anything or just paint directly on it?
You can just paint directly on top of it, given that it's just a piece of plastic!
@@OurPaintedLives Thank you so much for the response. I'm looking forward to trying it out and to your next video.
🤍🤍🤍🤍 always
Have you ever tried oils on watercolor paper?
