- He’s Nintendo’s most popular character, but boy oh boy has Super Mario proven to be a touch character to adapt to the big screen. As we previously covered on our show Awfully Good, the 1993 big-screen Live-action version of Super Mario Bros was a disaster, but now, thirty years later, a faithful version of the classic video game series has finally hit the silver screen, with it doing the series justice in the only way they ever really good - by making it animated. Has The Super Mario Bros. Movie been worth the wait? We'll tell you in our spoiler-free review!

It makes you want to go home and play the game.
Miyamoto: "We did it!"
Having ambition is all it takes to make a videogame adaptation work
That's why most videogame adaptations in the past failed, because the studio hired people that didn't understand videogames or filmmaking
That's why recent adaptations like "Detetive Pikachu", "Sonic The Hedgehog", "The Last of Us" and "Arcane" worked, because the people behind it understood the games and the media
Sonic didn’t work. Pikachu did work however
Last of us and arcane didn’t work dude
Yeah until last pf us has to adapt the sequel material
Nailed it! =)
@@firestrikeriii5043 other way around, Detective Pikachu was horrible
Besides high video game sales, I am certain this movie will pump up the attendance numbers to Universal's Nintendo World. This means more bad news for Disney.
Dear Nintendo. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD RELEASE A ZELDA 9 EPISODE SERIES! OR METROID!
Congrats on getting a good mic. You sound so much better /professional
Strongly disagree. It was great. 10 out of 10. Music awesome, jokes funny, loaded with Easter eggs, visuals beautiful, tons of throwbacks. All characters were well represented for who they are. No agenda or politics, it was wholesome and family friendly. Best of all it had good moral to the story: believe in yourself, importance of family, never give up, put others before yourself, and pursue your dreams and don’t let others stop you or bring you down.
My kids 6 and 4 loved it and so did me and my wife. We all laughed and smiled through
The whole thing. It accomplished everything a movie like this is supposed to and my kids asked “can we watch that again” as soon as it was over.
Joblo the issue I m having with critics about a video game movie: one. It not supposed to be a film .Second it not supposed to have a storyline .thurd. I want to relive my teens years with Nostalgia. Fourth I want to run home and play the gane. Five. What happened to the day whereby go the movies and have fun without any Expectation jus be a kid. That's is missing plus the kids don't have their own category
This was definitely a review I appreciate. I look forward to watching this film. I'm not going to watch it day one because I don't want to do with all the crowds and I mean come on with all the kids being there it's going to be so loud. I'll wait like a couple weeks
The super mario bros movie review is like someone checking your results of your report card
I’m tired of recurring origin stories for established popular characters! Either give me a new character that is compelling, or let’s move things along!
They nailed it with this one, it’s for the fans not the critics and that’s how you smash the box office.
Expected 300 million worldwide gross opening weekend and that’s the movie broken even and already in 50 million dollars profit straight away.
Well it worked can’t wait to see it and my 3 year old boy seen the trailer on the tv and is now Mario mad!
Well, My Neighbor Totoro is for kids, too! But it's one of the best movies of all time! Or, you know, Winnie the Pooh! Or The Simpsons! Or Alice in Wonderland! Toy Story! So, the argument, that it doesn't have to be good because it's for kids is utter nonsense!
Yes that's true alot of so called mario fans are using it's a movie for kids argument and the nostalgia easter eggs and references argument to defend this film
lol “you didn’t keep the damsel in distress stereotype! This is woke!”
Forgot to mention Secret Life of Pets 😆
Damn... 6/10. I was expecting at least an 8, especially after this channel gave the Sonic movie a 7/10. 😐
Sonic is good. I don't even want to watch Mario. Sonic has jim Carrey.
Sonic was great. I mean, I actually prefer Sonic to Mario (would have capped Sonic being a quality franchise off a decade ago if it wasn't for Frontiers), but I love both. I'm looking forward to the Mario movie, but the Sonic movie definitely deserved a 7
How old are you? When are you going to understand that a rating is a reference? Can you make your own opinions? Oh gosh...
skinny Eggman...
@@hassassinator8858 Jim Carrey is a legend, so I didn't actually mind that
I have an ugly feeling their zelda animated movie will be a shrek wannabe with another milquetoast A list non voice actor playing a Link who doesn't know when to stop talking.
Well excuuuuuuuuussssssssssseeeeeeeee me Princess 😂. Yeah I hope it doesn’t go down that route.
the SING's dad issues ruined a little bit this movie, Mario and Luigi relationship was more than enough to move audiences and was addressed in a great way, the disfunctional family cliche stinks
This is a movie for kids first and foremost, so adults shouldn't be looking for an indepth nostalgic payoff. Brought my son, he loved it and I enjoyed parts.
I did think the pacing of the movie was a little weird, but the movie is actually great.
Make the pain stop 🎥
Worst thing about the film is the licensed music. You are doing a Mario movie. You have access to some of the best and most beautiful video game music of all time. But you are going to shove in take on me and I need a hero?
I hate the fact that all these great big comedy actors from 1995-2015 has slowly gone to doing almost only voice-over animation movies now... I get it, that it is easier and more money... but damnit :(
If u love Easter eggs and nostalgia, you'll love this.but,if u want story, you wont.but, its mario.
Metroid movie
Enough said
That would be awesome, but its like recreating the Cistine Chapel, blindfolded
Wow
With this cast, I wish the film was live action.
Does Seth Rogen do the laugh 😂
Two times baby😂
@@youtubepay7588 when I watched it I felt there some love between Mario and donkey kong. couple?
Honestly the 90s movie is amazing I love all the ppl coming out of the woodwork to hate on it when us true 90s babies love and cherish that film
The 90s movie was unwatchable it wasnt like the video games and the plot didn't make much sense personally I dont care what this reviewer says this new movie looks like it's going to be better than the 90s movie based on the clips looks like the Mario games 😊
That movie sucking is an objective fact dude, it’s nothing like the games so the fans can’t enjoy it for that, and the movie in general just has a lame plot, so even people who are not watching it for Mario hate it
No 90s babies love that movie, it’s not even in the “so bad it’s good” category
Remember the flintstones movie from the 90s aswell? It was just as awfull as the mario one 🤣
@@mikesilva3868 it was the first video game adaption. Do you go with established lore or make something new. It was more loved in its time than anyone wants to remember. I know I was there
Just saw a add for the super Mario bros movie when I watched this video.
A movie about 2 Italian American plumbers starting not a single person of Italian descent. The original live action featured a British-Romany guy (and no, that’s not the same as an Italian) and a Colombian-American guy from New York. They might as well have remade Birth of a Nation.
If a movie like Moana didn't have an Hawaiian cast I would agree with you, but come on they are two stereotypical animated characters invented in Japan, it's not like they represent Italian culture. Who cares.
I don't consider that to be too important, and this is not even correct information.
I hate when people just love to hate on the 93 version. I think that movie is so fun and VERY creative. This movie is definitely playing it safe. I appreciate the risks they did in 93. It was a fun attempt.
Is there seriously two music numbers?
I see no koopa kids?? Is that for part 2. Or what about king wart from part 2 for part 2. 🤔
I'm seeing Mario tomorrow.
My 9 yo son absolutely loved it! I loved it too!
Saw it today with the kids and we all enjoyed it. Didn't have quite enough of Mario being Super in my opinion, but he got there eventually.
I normally like Fred Wrmisen but really don't think he was a good fit for Cranky Kong, it was jarring he's rung that voice come out of that character. Seth Rogen was a weak link. But not a deal breaker. Everyone else was great including Pratt who has gotten a lot of unfair flak in the teasers.
"It's definitely better than the 93 version though" ... Is it though? You said it's not even really a film and that's exactly how I felt it looked from the trailers. It even looks like a video game. Why make a Mario movie that looks and feels like a video game, but you can't play it? For all the problems with the 93 movie, at least it was a proper film that justified it's existence by taking on the challenge of adapting the material into a live-action narrative feature. It was a failure, but a far more interesting movie than this one. I actually watched it recently, and while pretty boring at times, it's aged kinda well because it has that visually pleasing 90s practical dystopian sci-fi aesthetic to it.
Sorry but your take is not it
@@kirbyboycoolness6734 Given the reviews of this movie, which is all the information we have at this point since it's not out yet, my take is very much it.
@@ed1rko17 Okay but most of the reviews have been positive. The only negative reviews are just from Rotten Tomatoes, who aren’t trustworthy in the slightest
@@ed1rko17 u cant trust rotten tomatoes. and you are lit sick. go get help
I'm so f&%$ing tired of Seth Rogen doing voice-over work. He's exactly the same in everything. Absolute talent deficit.
Next Stop, Metroid movie...
I disagree with you fully dude😊
The Mario movie deserves a bigger score
Just wait for Zelda
I was hoping this would be closer in quality to the Suprisingly Very Good Sonic movies…oh, well
than go and watch the unwatchable movie in 1993 then
It's Illumination. It can't even hope to be spectacularly bad to be memorable like the 90s movie
It literally is tho. Y’all love to hate lmao
Loved the movie
*Hmm...Looks interesting* 😚
Between you, Jahns and Stuckmann it seems Dnd is getting a repeat viewing instead of this one. I'll check this one out on streaming.
I saw it in 3D & I liked it more than both sonic films
It's probably the best and most honest review of this movie. Anybody who says this movie was great or amazing is full of it.
generous score 6/10
Another sucks review from people who dont know and dont play mario games.
What did you expect, from a movie based on video game, when the characters jumps on turtles and smashes question blocks. Did you want him quoting shakesphere? This is fan services movie, if you dont fans of mario or Nintendo, thia is not the movie for you. 👎
Another nintendo fanboy , you sound like an Apple guy. 😀
Og movie was a classic. Pure batshit insanity but I watched it inebriated with some mates and it was a riot. 7/10 will show my kids
The 90s movie was unwatchable in my opinion rather watch this movie 😊
@@mikesilva3868 L take but understandable
@@jonathanleemederos1670 i hate the 90s version have a nice day this movie looks much better
I wish I could watch it inebriated. But I paid for our tickets so I probably have to be the one to drive but I'll be sure to order a bunch of crunchy food whenever "Mario" and "Donkey Kong" talk
The movie is like chris pratt. Milk toast.
