Though it is not a great movie from a narrative perspective which is important for critics who watch movies for a living. I think the most important thing to remember is that this is their first movie in 30 years and the last one was a huge disaster. So of course they were gonna hold back a bit and not get it 100% on their first try, plus they were working with illumination who are notorious in the animation community for taking the safest route possible (among other things). The pop songs in the movie were even last minute replacements of actual pieces of the score because Illumination just *had* to have pop songs in there 🙄 I think it’s safe to say they’ll probably only improve from this experience, especially considering the critical outcome being so mixed rather than overwhelmingly positive.

Honestly, I think what critics and a lot of people weren't expecting. Is that similar to how there's a certain type of superhero fatigue? I think there's also a certain type of animation, fatigue, and a lot of it comes from Disney and Pixar movies. And so when everything is a twist antagonist, oh there's a deeper plot than you think. Oh, there is a link to a wider cinematic universe that everyone's been doing for the past multiple years...I think Mario is dominating even to non-gamers simply because it's just a fun, Feel good movie and that's all it needed to be.

    • @jordanwhite352
      @jordanwhite352 Год назад +8

As a follow-up, what I will say is that if the sequels are spin-offs to, these movies are going to be carbon copies of the first one then yeah lob all those criticisms at them, but I think that this movie is a great beginning that can be expanded and fleshed out for it to be even better. It's kind of how there are certain flaws with Batman begins, but it was a good solid start and of course that pave the way to the absolutely spectacular the dark night. That's the type of progression I want to see with this Mario cinematic universe.

Sonic is still better. It doesn't need to be fast pace and ignore character developments and story. There got to be slow down to improve and flesh out the characters but most of it is replace with action to the next. Even Sonic plot has slow down so we can immerse ourself to those characters feelings and emotions. Mario just zip on and on. It's an endless action sequences to the next.

There was a couple of moments where I rolled my eyes and was eagerly waiting for a scene to end in Sonic's movie but that never happened with Mario Bros.
Though honestly if it weren't for the stupid Baracuda wedding scene in Sonic 2, I'd say Sonic 2 was better than Mario. Just...edit that one scene out and it's all good.

Imagine if a viewer or my wife that has no knowledge of video games. My wife never touch video game and hates them. Ignore all info about it as a video game and view it as a movie itself. You will see the flaws of Mario movie. Usually there is a theme and consensus of a movie. In Mario, i cannot even think of a right cause. A failed plumber that make a disaster (blow up the inter dimensional gateway to all worlds together) and become a hero by defeating Bowser. Mario just wanna save his brother Luigi but end up saving the Mushroom Kingdom. No the entire interdimensional worlds.
In Sonic. A blue furball who is a kid who wanted to be a super hero but need guidance from a human cop. Sort of remind me of Spiderman. Most of Spiderman and Batman popularity because each of us can be related to them internally. Can you relate yourself and learn more from Sonic or Mario?
It would be better if Mario is 2 hours long. Flesh out the characters. To me, it's nonstop action from one scene to the next. I think a sequel would be better. A deeper dive to characters like Peach and Lumina. A more dialog between Mario and Luigi. The only character I think Mario movie did great is Bowser. We get to know Bowser infatuation of Peach and his motives.
If its me for a sequel, i would have Bowser 7 kids rescue Bowser and kidnapped Princess Peach again. Then Mario, Luigi and Toad come for the rescue. Perhaps introduce Wario and Waluigi into the mix (alter ego/universe).

So, Mario is not JUST a light easy series. It's by no means a bad movie, but it could benefit from less fanservice and more plot. It can't run on fanservice forever, it eventually needs to be a cohesive story or it will end up failing. 1) Luigi was sidelined for most of it (though that tends to be an overarching thing in the Mario franchise) and
    2) Bowser should have just used the super star. Like, there were multiple chances for him to use it and absolutely wipe out the others it felt kind of trite that he didn't. I think they either should have had him get it later in the movie, or get it and lose it early on and have to fight to get it back.

I had fun, it's a kids movie, it's not supposed to be this type of movie that leaves you "thinking about life" after, lol, the Paris team's animation is good, well executed, good scene transitions, good use of game tropes, simple story line (again, it's for kids!! it has to be easy to follow), I laughed, Lumalee is the best though, but even Jack Black's Bowzer was good. I mean what do people want, lol

The most memoriable thing from this experience definitely is the wave of Luigi x Bowser shipping that resurfaced on Tumblr.

"kids drag their parent to", I saw it the other way around. I dragged my kids to it. There were more adults compared to kids when I went to see it. 😅

Just because they don't agree with your shitty taste? Lol, most people who develop a taste for movies will not like a movie like this one, young kids and fanboys are not great judges of quality lol.

Wreck-it Ralph is one of my favorite "kid movies". The Mario movie was a fun thing to watch once, maybe twice, but it won't have the staying power of Wreck-it Ralph or a lot of other Disney movies to me.

They started in the real world? Were they trying to rewrite the original live action mario out of existence? 😂

The whole Mario came from Brooklyn New York actually came from the old school Mario games backstory of Mario in the 80's - early 90's. The old Mario cartoon shows and the 1993 Mario movie just adapts that backstory in the forefront. Yoshi's Island, a game made in the mid-90's retcons that storyline. That's why lot of modern Mario games ever since after Yoshi's Island tries to forget this whole Brooklyn backstory and tries to make it seem that Mario just came from the Mushroom Kingdom. But back in the 80's, Mario came from Brooklyn New York is canon. The Donkey Kong Arcade games(Which are the first appearances of Mario), Mario Bros Arcade game, and Wrecking Crew do take place in Brooklyn New York.

Overall it was just such a fun and bright movie, and being an hour and a half it's perfect for quick entertainment. Scratches my simple little brain and gave me all the game nostalgia. Yeah I had some eye rolls but mostly I was grinning

Like you, I went in with the absolute lowest of expectations (to the point where I didn't even pay money to see it - I used a free ticket), and was incredibly entertained. I ended up giving it a 4 star rating on Letterboxd, simply because it actually entertained me and it was legitimately so much better than I was expecting. Now, will it make my year end lists? Who the heck knows, but for now, I'm more than happy with what we got.
