I've been fortunate to have traveled the world and trained in many gyms. Here are a few tips to add: 1) When you walk in the gym how does it smell and are the bathrooms clean? 2) Ask the other students why they like the gym and what can be improved 3) When you call, email, or message the gym on social media are they quick to respond? 4) Does the school have a dedicated curriculum? 5) Do they have a beginners class or are the classes mixed? 6) What are uniform policies like? 7) Do they have liability insurance? 8) How do they vet their instructors and how are they "certified?" 9) Does the staff have CPR, first aide, and AED training? 10) What are their contracts and cancellation policies like? Hopefully this helps!

I would like to add that the coach should ask you about your goals and you should then find a way to attain these goals. First judo club I went to, I told the coach I want to obtain belts and go to a competition and he directly told me that this was the wrong club for me.

Oh interesting! I love this one, and I think there’s def a lack of individualization at schools except for a select number of competitors (at least, that’s what I’ve seen in a lot of BJJ gyms). Do you think you had the wrong goals at that time, or do you think the coach was wrong, or what? (I mean either way it was clear there was a mismatch)

Sensei Jefferson is very accomplished and he could’ve easily listed accomplishments of the coach on that list but he didn’t. He gave an honest and realistic list of things to look for. Convenience being one of my top criteria as well. As a coach, I can say that Sensei Jefferson gave great advice and that he’s clearly an honest guy (based on this because I haven’t met him in person lol).
Based on my experience, I can hear advice from a coach and sort of translate a few things. In this video, coach gave advice that benefits the student 100%. You’d be shocked how often coaches in all sports sort of disguise things as “advice”
Many coaches are incentivized to tell you otherwise. Great vid and coach seems like an awesome guy with all the content you’ve had him in Josh. Keep these coming!

Considering how little judo clubs train and how few numbers there are of clubs... Generally iv found the best method of picking a club is basically going to every club within a 40 minutes drive radius lol

I think I rolled with you before at an open mat in Richardson, Tx sometime last year. Does that sound familiar at all? Great tips btw, thanks for sharing! I want to try judo later this year

North South JJ, I think NoGi Pans was happening near that time in Garland but maybe it was some other blue belt that beat me up haha
