It was an absolutely frigid day, but I was heading up to Fremont, Nebraska to check out a store that sells items they've collected from estate sales. The month prior I found some really great film cameras there and pretty much purchased all of them. Unfortunately my second visit wasn't as fruitful.
But I came prepared. I had my Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W290 with me and plenty of warm clothes so I could spend the entire afternoon on the streets of downtown Fremont filming and photographing whatever spoke to me.
I have to say that I really, really enjoyed shooting with the DSC-W290. Much more than I expected to. Setting the exposure compensation to -1/3 of a stop and metering to spot really helped me to be able to protect my highlights and expose for the part of frame that was most important to me (usually the highlights). I set my white balance to Cloudy and got acclimated to the camera rather quickly. It was fast and responsive, and it held up in the cold really well. Zero issues.
But I will say that when I got the photos off the memory card and looked at them more closely in the RNI Films for iPad app, I was a bit disappointed.
There was something a little soulless and clinical about the photos. The image didn't have much character, and I was most disappointed with the amount of distortion there was when shooting at the camera's widest angle. If I shot with this camera again I'd zoom in just a touch to try to eliminate the bowing at the edges of the frame.
Having shot with mostly Canon digicams leading up to this, I found myself longing for those images - especially the images from the cameras that have Canon's Positive Film preset.
Will I shoot with this Cyber-Shot again? Probably not. I'll most likely list it on my eBay store and move it along to someone else.

wow!! i'm so surprised to hear you say you weren't happy with the pictures, i came here to say this might be my favorite video of yours so far. the location is beautiful and i'm so enamored with how you captured it, both video and photos. i may be biased because i love the industrial look: the wires and vapor, the metal structures and engineering of it all. so cool. you mentioned your pictures feeling too clinical, but i really think that's their strength! the muted colors, the overcast and snowy weather, the shuttered stores and the details you captured, as well as how intentional you are with perspective -- it makes the pictures so rich and atmospheric. the contrast between what looks like the epitome of man-made environment and the lack of people (for the most part) is so powerful. and as always, your video work is amazing and ties in so seamlessly with the pics. thank you!!
So appreciate this! I mean, I think I like what's *IN* the photos, but I just don't love the "soul" of the image. It's lacking a bit of extra dimension that I feel like I can get in the Canon and Fujifilm digicams I've used. It's hard to nail down what it is exactly, but that's the best I can come up with.
Now that being said, I definitely dig the vibe of the whole thing and the "soul" of Fremont, Nebraska as I saw it. And I'm so appreciative of your comment - it's this kind of reaction that fuels the work and adds even more excitement to making these videos.

Nope! I made a few of my past videos using the digicam for both photo and video but something was off with the vibe when the video was that low quality. I dunno…

Another great video with some great photos. As a Canon pocket digital camera fan myself, I see what you mean about the Sony images, especially at the wide end, but I still think you snapped some fine images with it. But sometimes learning what we DON'T like is as important as learning what we DO like. :-) Keep up the great work with your channel - yours is one of the few that I regularly seek out to see if anything new has dropped (the RUclips notifications is patchy).

I’m definitely biased toward Canon digicams overall - especially the ones with the Positive Film preset. I’d be curious if I’d feel the same way about the photos if I had no idea what kind of camera it was…

Have these photos been adjusted?
Yes. Edited with the RNI Films app for iPad. I use their Portra 400 film emulation and I reduce the strength of it significantly and then edit all the normal stuff like highlights, shadows, saturation, etc.
Man I wanna go out and shoot my Canon 30D now...
