... and the local gendarmes will be at your bedroom door before the end of the first twelve bar blues. “Disturbing the peace? Surely not I officers...” 😂
Hey, man. With a Two Notes Captor, anything's a bedroom setup. ...Yes, I'm aware that it's not the same as having speakers shoving air so hard it feels like a cushion of sound behind you, but some of us live in 1B1B apartments and can't play without either attenuation or load boxes.
Thanks to Fryette Power Station, I use that setup in my home office room. Sounds awesome. But of course not quite the same as it would be with more dBs
I used to play in a band (in my former life as a drummer) with a guy who had a 100 watt Hi Watt. It was magical. Sounded as big as God. Most of the sound guys in the smaller to mid-sized clubs we were playing hated it. We were generally criticized for being entirely too loud (our bass player had the big Ampeg SVT rig with the 8 x 10 cab, a mid-driven turbo rat for his clean tone into a quite-driven Muff for his dirty tone). I'll never forget the tones that guy used to pull out of that Hi Watt, though. Simply astounding.
@@mathewrileymusic - our local music scene largely consisted of clubs with ridiculous PA systems for their size and there were no local ordinances in those days to limit the noise floor in the bar district. As long as the sound guys could get the drums and vocals out over the amps without massive feedback issues, nobody really cared how loud it was. That was 15 or more years ago, now, though. I'm sure things have changed since then.
Come on, boys blend the power booster after a Big Muff into that Hiwatt. Add a mistress for some vintage Gilmour! Love Floyd, or hate them, DG and Phil Taylor are masters of guitar tone. Absolutley have Bjorn Riis from Norway on the show. This was entertaining.
I know this is 5 years ago .but it just happened that i found last week an original colorsound overdriver black hammered .and im over the moon .omg i cant belive the boost and the huge overdrive tone.👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🎸🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🎸🎸🌹🌹❤❤❤👍👍👍
Sergio Rodrigues Bjorn or Mr. Gilmour himself. 🙂 Hey Mick and Dan, why don’t you ask Davey G to come on the show. 😉 As a side note, I think this show goes to show that almost every guitarist wants the same thing: to physically feel the power of a hugely powerful amplifier, be it Marshall, Boogie or Hiwatt - or anything else.
Mick at 35:34 totally hits the nail on the head, describes exactly my impression of the Colorsound circuit from watching this, and also totally pegs me on not meshing with fuzz/treble boosters as they've been too harsh/gnarly/frizzly compared to mild overdrive. From this video, the Colorsound circuit appeals to me way more than any distortion or fuzz tone I've ever heard. Must try one for myself. Thank you guys! Also, never censor your "lightbulb moments" as we're feeling what you're feeling! Sharing in gear joy is precisely why I watch every TPS even when it's tone and gear that I don't connect with.
So after watching this I fired up my Hi-Tone (Hiwatt repro) 50 watter, with a Homebrew Germania 44 (OC44 germanium transistor) followed by a Magnetic Solar Bender via a Gibson SG Special. Holy bleepin’ bleep! I had to dial down the master volume a bit to keep the house from shaking, but what a sound! I’d never properly used the Germania in full-range boost/overdrive mode before ‘cuz it always drove amps into sounding overcompressed…but I’d never tried this with the Hi-Tone. No compression this time, just huge and loud. Even with the guitar vols at ~4 there’s a bit of crunch from the pedal along with an almost acoustic hi-fidelity from the guitar. Yow! Kick on the fuzz and the sound thickens and just sings. Turn up the guitar vols and it’s the closest thing to playing at stadium levels that I’ve ever experienced at a non-life-threatening volume. So cool! Thanks, guys, for pushing me to explore the possibilities of my own gear!
I'm wanting either their custom lowatt or the dg 50, do you think with the master volume I can get good overdriven tones without killing my family lol? I'm assuming I'll need some od pedals to make happen but would be nice if just the master volume can allow it.
@@benjaminfowler4513 The Hiwatt preamp circuit will crunch nicely at manageable volume if you turn up the channel volume pot and turn down the master. Try ~3:00 on the channel vol. With either a Lowatt or the Hi-Tone Gilmour you’d need to use an attenuator to run the master vol high enough that the power section compresses some. That’s where the amps really sing. Alternately set the master in the 10:00-11:00 range, if you can, and use a compressor pedal to kinda/sorta emulate the “turned up master” sound. Any medium gain soft clipping dirt pedal oughta be able to do much the same thing.

Nice! I built a HiWatt clone for myself way back in the 80's from scavenged HiFi bits and old TV parts. I wish I had never sold it now but it weighed an absolute tonne and rack gear was just coming out and I was on board that slim stereo rack train something shocking.
YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!! Been waiting a long time for this! As someone who actually saw David Gilmour perform live at Pompeii two years ago you can probably guess how much I loved today's video!!!! Perfect example of Gilmour's rhythm tones from the mid 70s
We //might// delve a little deeper into Gilmour’s world. Might. Trying not to do that however because it’s a certain fail with inevitable abuse from Gilmorons. So we’ll just enjoy the tones and say you don’t have to be Gilminded to enjoy them too. :0)

Anyone looking for authentic HiWatt clones amps and cabinets look at Hi-Tone. I’m a Hiwatt junkie from way back. The Hi-Tone is as good as it gets. Hand wired point to point military spec wiring, nos mustard caps. Their Eclipse cabinet is based on the WEM cabs made famous by Gilmour. I can’t stress enough at just how good Hi-Tone’s products are.
Yep! I’ve got their DR-504 repro and a 2x12 cab with their Fane purple repros. The interior is a work of art. The 504 compresses and thickens a little lower on the master volume than the 103, but it can still get fierce. :) I often run it into a PowerStation when I feel like rockin’ out sans gain pedals.
David Kieltyka Clayton’s work is second to none. These amps are truly a work of art and precision. Picture perfect wiring. Even the cabinets are wired with detail and an artistic approach. Good as it gets to me.
I've been sooooo excited for this episode for a while! I left a comment a while back requesting some content on Hiwatt. Thanks so much for featuring this. Whether you were already planning to make this episode before my comment or not, it still makes me feel like you really listen to our feedback. If you are at all interested in a Hiwatt style cab some time in the future, I can't say enough great things about the Hi-Tone HT4123 I purchased several months back. The thing's a monster in sound and weight! They also make some top-notch WEM style cabs. Cheers and thanks again!
I've watched this video 3 times over the course of a few months and the joy is so infectious I just keep coming back to it. I never lusted for a Hiwatt and now it's the only amp I can think about.
I just got my new Tru fi Colordriver. I love it! It sounds amazing. Packs a gigantic punch. Makes my fender practice amp blast as if it's a Hiwatt. Perfect if you're trying to nail those Gilmour tones.
Best one so far. And that’s saying something. A revelation. Just shows there’s always something out there worth searching for in our quest for ...... ❤️
Awesome video as normal guys. I👍🎸. Friday are not the same without your videos. For me Hiwatt amp with Orange power boost is the best guitar tone ever. Chris from custom pedal boards is such a cool guy who makes awesome boards.
I am shocked to see this 3 years later and see I was that last comment. Wow. This is still the most amazing thing. I do still feel as we all felt then. Love you boys - and every quest is better than no quest!
I'll concur with those who suggested Hi-Tone for that Hiwatt sound. Just amazing amps. I, however, got their LoWatt (18w) because of the insane volumes even at 50w. That thing is a beast. LOUD! Still tons of headroom. Very clean amp. Incredibly articulate. Just takes to pedals beautifully! Thanks for this show! Great episode!
When Dan goes and crouches to look at the amp, it’s like Lord Of The Rings! Hadn’t realized how much the main shot was foreshortening things! Dan, you’ve become a hobbit - or maybe Gollum (“my precioussss”)
although I think the fuchs thing or another dumble clone would add fuel to the spending fire. Dr Z would also make it interesting as they are super touch sensitive.
I have had my Hiwatt custom100 for over 35 years. Mine is the late seventies Two input one. With normal and brilliant channels which not able to do the input jumping. Anyway. Speaking of trying to find a way to use it these days at a lower volume. I see what has been my solution for few months now behind you in the video on your shelf. It’s the Fryette Power Station. I put mine through a Power Station and it helps tremendously to keep my sound at a much lower volume. It may not be completely transparent but I don’t feel I’m not losing much. Although I’m afraid I found this solution about 30 years too late as I do suffer tinnitus greatly. Might be something to try out.
The original Coloursound pedal into that Hiwatt is best sound I have heard in a long, long time so live in the studio it must be epic. Black Crowes 'esque' to my ears. Loved it
not even a full minute into the video and I am already laughing!!! :D The look of pain on Mick's face and the look of euphoria on Dan's... priceless!! Hahahaha
Man, great episodes! Fun, great tones and interesting facts. Thanks for introducing the True-fi Colordriver Dan! I think this will be the fuzz pedal I m going to get!
To offer a solution to the volume issue, try switching to a less efficient speaker. A 3dB reduction in speaker efficiency will “halve” the power of your amp without changing the headroom of your amp. 6dB will cut it in half again, etc.
Guys thanks for this video! I purchased the Colordriver and couldn’t be happier. What an organic tone! Even with my low headroom PRRI. But I do have a Weber 10F150T speaker in there. Best tone I’ve ever had. I use the Colordriver at just breaking up a bit with the gain, then set the master at slightly above unity with the amp.
Ah yes. The one that got away. The first pedal I bought, although it may have been the second, was a Colorsound Overdriver in 1974. Sold it in 1980 because I'd just got a '76 Marshall & thought that I didn't need pedals anymore. D'Oh! I used to run mine into a solid state 30 Watt amp with a 12” speaker, and the crazy volume thing used to happen in spades. Fortunately the amp used to have 4 inputs, so I’d run the guitar straight into one channel, run a cable out of that channel’s second input to Overdriver, then back into the second channel. Then I could get the clean and dirty volumes into the same County.
“ It just was” (18:12). My favorite comment of the day. Another great show mates. And I can honk for Chris Ryan, he built me a very nice pedal board that houses my G2 and other pretty play things. Cheers
I built a Power Boost pedal a while back and it has never left my board! Freaking awesome overdrive, almost into fuzz, tones! Love it! I put a master volume on mine though and I changed the value of the gain pot to spread it out a bit so it isn't all in the last 2.5mm.
So, much like the Stratocaster, the original pedal manufacturers got it right the first time around. And louder is better. Also, as the owner of an all original 1974 WEM Dominator MkIII, I don't need to be told how good their speakers and cabs were, but I don't think we should tell other people as it will drive up the prices, and I haven't bought up all the old stock yet. ;0)
I haven't been able to watch the entire show yet, but this is one where I'm hearing sounds that make me think wait a minute, I've heard that before, on albums and live albums.
The Hero’s Journey was his all-embracing metaphor for the deep inner journey of transformation that heroes in every time and place seem to share, a path that leads them through great movements of separation, descent, ordeal, and return. This has been the heroes journey...”
Hey, fellow TPS fans, this episode --like nearly all of them-- is a much more rewarding experience if you go to the trouble of listening through a nice pair of headphones. Those teeny computer speakers just don't do these tones justice. Also, surely, there must be some rich-arse out there who would be willing to loan these brilliant men a board of Pete Cornish pedals for a few weeks. For all the tens of thousands of gear videos featured on RUclips, there are relatively few that demonstrate ANY Cornish pedals (and desperately few of those have been produced since the early Gearmandude days) and I've not seen any, AT ALL, that truly do the kind of deep-dive exploration that Dan and Mick do on this channel. Come on, our wealthy, altruistic fellow guitar nerds... make with the pedals. :)
THROBAK, finally, ever since i saw Andy on proguitarshop demo the overdrive/boost in 2009 i wanted one ,finally got it 2015 as well as the strange master treble booster , so damn good
Yeah! I've got Fuzz Haze and it's the best sounding germanium fuzz I've ever heard! Dunno why thatpedalshow never tried one of it (?) but it's definitely worth it.
@@Krzyzy670 Throbak don't seem to get enough credit for their stuff. The Overdrive/Boost is probably the one I'd get it I had the $. The Buffalo FX Power Booster also seems rad, but it's more like a faithful reproduction. Throbak have been a little creative with their one. The Strangemaster has germanium/silicon options, yeah? I'm looking for a silicon solution to my TB needs. Atm I am looking at a Daredevil Silver Solo. I own a D*A*M Red Rooster clone but with my rig, it sounds more like a dirty boost or mild ge Fuzz. I want ott Treble Booster toan! Germanium is a pain in the bottom
I got to say that I’ve been watching your videos for quite a while but I’ve never commented on this. I love the way that you highlight the pedal that is in use. I don’t know why I just had to tell you that but it makes it so easy to see what you are using and I thank you
You're kidding??? I thought he used Fenders! Thanks so much, I love Big Star. I always thought Radio City - that chiming, spangly, power-pop par excellence - was done with Fenders, VOX, treble booster etc. It was a DR103??!!!? Dude, You just blew my mind.
Matt Gilbert, watch Nothing Can Hurt Me if you get a chance. Fantastic documentary and they cover their hair-brained HIWATT purchase, plus his DR103 is just chillin' in the background in the Ardent interviews.
Fun fact - in 1995 on the "Man Called Destruction" Tour I spotted Alex smoking a cig out the back of the Metro in Sydney. It was late afternoon, soundcheck time I reckon. I resisted the urge to gush, left him in peace, and then came back later that evening for a ripping show. He oozed charisma. Every female in the theatre would have willingly had his babies for him that night. Srsly. At one point I turned around and every single lass in the place was utterly transfixed. He was a...well. The name said it all. RIP, Chris, Alex, Andy (is Jody Stephens still alive?)
He used a sparkly Tele that night for the two Big Star numbers, idk the amp but it sounded Fendery. "Baby Beside Me" and "In the Street". #1 stuff. Everything else was Alex Chilton solo. Loved it.
Again great to see Mick inspired inspired and more inspired Really good to see both of you enjoying the new discovery of a new amp. Love it 😊 great show 🎸
Of course! I’ve seen every single episode, at least once. However, the tones that the lads achieved in this episode were, as Mick said perfectly, “biblical “.
What a brilliant day ! I watched your TC Electronic Corona/Boss CE-1 Toneprint being produced with the remarkable Tore Morgenstern earlier which was fascinating ..... and now I`ve just watched this astonishing TPS episode about the Colorsound Powerdrive and clones ( and the HiWatt of course ......................... and have joined the gobsmacked club !
Now we're cookin with fire! Just about to hit play, been waiting for this one. Nothing compares to my throwbak overdrive and the rest of the Throbak pedals are just as cool. Only other pedal I have that is just as awesome but a totally different beast is my nobels odr-1. Bring it!
You've just named my two most desired boost/drive pedals. Preparing to sell a bunch of others so I can get the Throbak and the Nobels. I thought about the Wampler Paisley Deluxe but the Nobels pedal they based one side on is not the ODR-1, right? Throbak are the bomb.
@@mattgilbert7347 Not sure what the paisley is based on, haven't tried one but it would be hard to beat the odr for rythem sounds. I put a ts9 after it for leads which makes your solo jump right out because the odr boosts the low mids and the ts9 mids are higher. I have the throbak next in the chain, it has less mids than both but seems the most amp like. I like it for rythem and then boost it with the ts9 for leads.
Best show on RUclips. They should put TPS on the science channel.
This is probably more scientific than the watered-down BS they show on the science channels nowadays.

If you are at all interested in a Hiwatt style cab some time in the future, I can't say enough great things about the Hi-Tone HT4123 I purchased several months back. The thing's a monster in sound and weight! They also make some top-notch WEM style cabs.
Cheers and thanks again!
One of the best TPSs of late. I love how your minds get blown by learning new things. Wallets beware
Too late ‘73 DR103 already purchased. :0)
Really? Which Fender amp? I'm about to get a Princeton Reverb.

Best one so far. And that’s saying something. A revelation. Just shows there’s always something out there worth searching for in our quest for ...... ❤️
"Biblical tone" - love it! Man, big drives is my kind of show! Since you are on a colorsound kick I'd love to see a show on tone benders!
"it's made me question everything"! Best line ever dan
Awesome video as normal guys. I👍🎸. Friday are not the same without your videos. For me Hiwatt amp with Orange power boost is the best guitar tone ever. Chris from custom pedal boards is such a cool guy who makes awesome boards.
One of the best episodes ever! Classic combination between the Hiwatt and Overdriver/Power Booster. I have a Buffalo FX Power Booster that I love
Never laughed so hard for an intro. That was great guys, thank you. Btw, thats a righteous tone over there. \m/
I am shocked to see this 3 years later and see I was that last comment. Wow. This is still the most amazing thing. I do still feel as we all felt then. Love you boys - and every quest is better than no quest!
Ah TPS, it's Friday
Hahahhaa!!!!
Oh man… that Hiwatt is a banger
Thumbs up for Hiwatt vs Two-Rock episode!
although I think the fuchs thing or another dumble clone would add fuel to the spending fire.
Loved it
Totally Crowes. Mmmmmmmm
Great episode. Best tones yet. I was truly blown away by what I was hearing.
not even a full minute into the video and I am already laughing!!! :D The look of pain on Mick's face and the look of euphoria on Dan's... priceless!! Hahahaha
This is probably your best episode yet! Hiwatt + Power Boost = bliss...
I've been waiting for this! Hiwatt DR504 owner here!
Gunna watch this episode again 👍. That opening bit is hilarious!! Thanks guys this is definitely one of the best That Pedal Shows.
Robert Fripp also used the Hiwatt to great ends.
Knowing there is someone else out there who laughs with joy at making loud rude noises is why I watch you guys. Play on mate.
Man, great episodes! Fun, great tones and interesting facts. Thanks for introducing the True-fi Colordriver Dan! I think this will be the fuzz pedal I m going to get!
Have one - terrific! Highly recommend...
I am waiting my 18v colordriver
The best sound to the start of a show EVER!
Don't forget Alex Lifeson Hiwatt user late 70's to early 80's
I love the humility guys. I'm glad as you've got older and wiser, that you've begun to realise that the more you learn, the less you actually know!
:0) It’s an ongoing quest for ultimate ignorance. ;0)
Cheers
Silver Sky getting some love today! Great tones guys!!
I built a Power Boost pedal a while back and it has never left my board! Freaking awesome overdrive, almost into fuzz, tones! Love it! I put a master volume on mine though and I changed the value of the gain pot to spread it out a bit so it isn't all in the last 2.5mm.
Epic boys. Just epic!
Great show guys!!! Love to see you guys just jamming away and getting lost in that sound!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
46:00 the best tones ever heard on this show.
Kesa Mek yup
HOLY SHIT Mick..!!!!!....that Collings with the HiWatt. No words do it justice.
THROBAK, finally, ever since i saw Andy on proguitarshop demo the overdrive/boost in 2009 i wanted one ,finally got it 2015 as well as the strange master treble booster , so damn good
Those pedals kick serious bottom. The Stone Bender also sounds awesome.
Gus do you have any problems with placement in the chain re: the Strangemaster?
okay hands down, that highwatt with colorsound is one of the best sounds ive ever heard
Check this. Great Colorsound clone: www.leehooker.com/en/effects/color-trip/
I have a clone of the coloursound power boost called the Uberdriver - cranked it and it sounds like the walls are caving in, fantastic.
Yes! the collings and Red together!
Love it. I got a 1974 Hiwatt DR103 and it's so goddamn loud... crank the master up and you can peel some paint off the walls. Not kidding...
I got to say that I’ve been watching your videos for quite a while but I’ve never commented on this. I love the way that you highlight the pedal that is in use. I don’t know why I just had to tell you that but it makes it so easy to see what you are using and I thank you
Thanks! It takes me hours. I appreciate the noticing! Mick here. :0)
This rules!!!
The DR103 is THE Big Star amp!!!
Alex Chilton's tone on the Radio City LP is angelic, and it's all strat and the DR103.
Loved it.
@@ebeep I own that and have watched it multiple times. Somehow I didn't notice the Hi-Watt! !
I am just re-watching this episode and man... this was such an awesome one!
Another TPS means more knowledge to us and less hearing to Dan and Mick
Again great to see Mick inspired inspired and more inspired
Really good to see both of you enjoying the new discovery of a new amp.
Love it 😊 great show 🎸
What a mess I have to clean up after watching this episode! The tones, my word, the tones!!
Have you not seen TPS before?
New box, MAN size, for every episode. Dark room, SO at work/holidays/locked out.
Of course! I’ve seen every single episode, at least once. However, the tones that the lads achieved in this episode were, as Mick said perfectly, “biblical “.
Something like this? d050fb18391404b7878a-55f06a2c7c2d43d02d9dbec849c72a65.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/previews/UdOEOawi.jpg
You’re on the right tack! 😎
Wow wow wow guys! Truly some Old Testament tones there! Hiwatt w/Colorsound Boost! Yeehaw!
Yep, unforgettable :)
“That’s the sound!” I keep shouting at the screen
What a brilliant day ! I watched your TC Electronic Corona/Boss CE-1 Toneprint being produced with the remarkable Tore Morgenstern earlier which was fascinating ..... and now I`ve just watched this astonishing TPS episode about the Colorsound Powerdrive and clones ( and the HiWatt of course ......................... and have joined the gobsmacked club !
50:09 is where Mick discovers possibly my favorite p90 tone of all time
Isn’t it lovely. /0)
Seriously my jaw dropped there too!!!!
17:21 was *literally* my expression when I saw the Hiwatt in the thumbnail for this video. 😂🤣😂
Woke up this morning thinking about pedals. This video is the first thing in my suggested. Illuminati = Real
Started learning Have a Cigar solo yesterday, this comes up in my feed 24 hrs later=Global Elitists had Alex Jones silenced.
Weirdest blues lyrics I’ve ever read
@@thebossandthebeestonstreet9493
I see what you did there
Some of the greatest sounds on earth. Oh my god!
This video just made HiWatt prices skyrocket trough the stratosphere 😔
You know you found a sweet tone when you hear expletives from Mick! Great video and great amp, thanks TPS keep rockin
Yeah sorry about that. I couldn’t help it
Now we're cookin with fire!
I CANNOT believe how amazing that tone is a the top of the video. Wow.
