    I don't think that their primary interest in moving the game to unreal 5 is for the graphics. I think the real appeal would likely be that they could far more easily create original content. Very few people can create anything that would work in WoW quickly or easily, however if you're dealing with the U5 engine the number of people who'd be capable of working on the project expands exponentially. Literally thousands of times more people have the skillset, and in a coding environment that's almost certainly easier and more efficient to work with. That's not even mentioning the documentation.

    • @hobosnake1
      @hobosnake1 2 месяца назад

      except they're still supporting legacy non unreal version, so no. They can't really take advantage of anything but the graphics as far as I'm aware.

    • @TheBaronBJ
      @TheBaronBJ 2 месяца назад

      @hobosnake1 Even if they were looking to ditch the old client, you'd want to maintain legacy support for ages for stability. Even if they want to transition over fully, they wouldn't throw things away.
      I'm imagining they've built a system that converts content made in WoW to U5 automatically (with clean up necessary, of course).
      However, if there are indefinite plans to support both, it'd still be advantageous and give them greater control. The legacy content may be stuck with pre-existing assets/models/skins, but once the content is swapped over, they can use new, custom models in their place. That means that, sure, the content is in both U5 and Legacy, but the "REAL" version is in U5. Hypothetically speaking, I don't know their plans. The disparity could spread in a multitude of ways.

    • @Nathan-de9yl
      @Nathan-de9yl 2 месяца назад +5

      @@hobosnake1 incorrect. There was more information in a QA they did the "legacy version" will be the graphics how they were but after a point the whole client is being fully ported over to UE5 the "legacy version" will be a 1:1 recreation of the old graphics in UE5. In time they will be 100% working in UE5 and no longer supporting players logging in on an old 1.12 client. But you will still have the option to have the game LOOK like the old graphics but it will be on the new engine. So yes, they will be able to take advantage of more than just the shaders and lighting. This was explicitly outlined by the owner/spokes person of the server that the new shaders, lighting etc is only the "Cherry on top" but players can still use the legacy mode to have the game look like the older version.

  • @Nathan-de9yl
    @Nathan-de9yl 2 месяца назад +16

    This was honestly a big miss by the boys. The cool shaders and lighting is the "selling point" but not why they are doing it. They are doing it because it will make modding 1.12 1000% easier to do which will allow them to not only make an implement custom content easier, but also make things that were previously impossible to do with wow's engine now possible. They gave some examples. But being about to more easily make content, implement the content, edit the world map and more is why they are doing this.
    They basically just did no research and shit on the unfinished "updated graphics" which I agree are not something I am super excited for (YOU CAN JUST NOT USE THEM). But the amazing custom vanilla content this server puts out and the prospect of it becoming 10x easier for them to do by switching engines and becoming unshackled by the old client's limitations is the important take away and they completely missed it. As well as this edging their work closer to being "transformative". There are many HUGE implications of this that are worth discussing even if you are someone who doesn't like how it looked, like me. Or if they didn't wanna discuss the server because it is a fan server they could have talked about what this could mean if applied to modern wow (meaning a whole new engine even if it was a new in house engine).
    Like if doing something like this would make developing WoW and the classic era of things like seasons easier to do instead of trying to work on a ramshackle of the currently retail engine (Generally one expansion behind) and using a lot of code from over a decade ago must greatly increase production time and chance for major issues. What would an entirely new WoW engine look like? Is it time for a new WoW engine as this one is just an ancient engine that has just been updated over and over again. Imagine how much tech debt retail wow's engine has.
    Honestly very disappointed in this channel for this poorly researched and thought out video that really just makes a mockery of one of the only teams out there putting out true vanilla+ content that stays faithful to the design of the game. Would have really liked to see better from Bellular..

    "World of Warcraft is supposed to be a super cartoony look"
    Nah, that was engine limitations of early 2000s 3D. Especially when you can have hundreds or thousands of players taking up a single space you have to be able to render all those polygons without melting GPUs
    The cartoony look came with later iterations, especially after MOP and Hearthstone, which ruined the vibes of the franchise as a whole. Its why I refer to modern WOW as World of Hearthstone, and with good reason. In fact WOW was supposed to have everquest style darkness at a certain point but was scrapped because they realized most people would be playing in the evenings.
    I will say though. WOW is woefully out of date and needs a refresh with a modern engine. Turtle is doing its own thing and I applaud them, though I wish they would actually go the full monte and start developing their own universe on the side to build their own IP and MMO off of, because these fan projects, no matter how great, are always under the threat of lawsuit shutdowns.

    • @danmbradley
      @danmbradley 2 месяца назад +1

      never been a fan of the cartoony painted on chunky armour assets in wow. The robes that stretch as characters run. I'd much prefer a wow 2 with a less cartoon style higher resolution fully rendered and modern assets. FF14 looks and feels great to play. That sort of style would be better imo.

    Context for the "Extending The Lifespan of our Favorite 20-Year-Old World Statement". Turtle wow uses the vanilla client as opposed to most P servers that use the WOTLK client. The reason for the integration into Unreal Engine 5 isn't just because shiny graphics but also because the 20 year old game client they are using is getting more and more compatbility problems with modern computers and so intergrating it into UE5 actually makes it more comptable and apparently even easier to run on modern machines.

    The UE upgrade is largely because of the limitation that the old 2005 vanilla client has. Like it barely runs on modern GPUs and get extremely confused if you have multi-monitor setup or slightly weirder resolution. The graphics update is just one of the feature the new client will have. Also Blizzard will never work on anything similar to what Turtle's custom content is about, because for them it's just too much effort that they can instead put into retail wow that earns 20x more. That's why they didn't care about merging random SoD changes to Era servers, it is cheaper to not have to maintain separate Era changes when they don't get that much money out from it.

    For those who don't know, server side of things don't share any blizzard owned code and is written from scratch over a decade completely open source. Client doesn't know whether it is connecting to a blizzard owned server or a private one since the whole protocol between server client is emulated by checking client's operations. Server side has been so much mature that any able person can thus add content into it. However the client has always been the poster child since it requires not only developer contribution but also art direction and media creation. Private server competition is high and at some places where it is forbidden to play wow or simply is unaffordable , is used as an alternative as well. Having a client from scratch surely will make any server stand out but the question is whether the UE5 project will be open sourced or not (server side is open sourced). I think blizzard is waiting for that specific decision by turtle wow devs. My guess is that Turtle wow devs will release the UE5 wow client project publicly without the assets. I think that would be the safest way to go. Regardless, there are methods for extracting assets from a compiled client. Interesting times.

    Blizz hasn't shut both Ascention and Turtle because these projects are innovating WoW. If/when Blizz decides that they want to incorporate these innovations in the actual game they'll just hit them with a Cease and Desist letter and get the game assets in the out-of-court settlement. The thing is tho, I hope Blizzard bans me for not hating on pServers. Some of them are 100% shovelware garbage cash shop scams and should be taken off the platform. Others tho, they are so far different from Blizzards game that they should and probably are intentionally left alone. Pservers are a place for players who enjoyed WoW back in the day, but no longer can due to Blizzard's ignorance or personal desires. Over the past several years, we have already seen how untrustworthy Blizzard is and it's only been up to today that they are only *sorta* listening to the community and making changes where there needs to be. Just leave them alone, let Blizzard deal with them, if you want to protect your subscription then just don't talk about them, but don't hate on them.
