I use to go very often in my kayak to paddle alone through the numerous creeks and lagoons of the Everglades and once there in the middle of no where I ask myself “Am I aware of being”? Then a huge silence arises and the only thing I notice is a subtle vibration above my head and and immense calm that passes all understanding. Unfortunately it doesn’t last too long, but I can’t stop thanking Rupert for showing me this beautiful question I read in his book: “ being aware of being aware” Is so simple

      @@TheAetherKnows well said.
the more we abide in silent mind, the more the structures of the ego are burned away.
interesting how you experience it as rain washing away the world from your eyes.
i experience it as my heart being on fire, a pulsating energy.
i just want to sit in this ordinary room, in silence, as everything burns away.
there is great peace, great bliss, to abide in this.

Now, there is the most refreshing thought I have heard in a long, long time: “There is nothing spiritual in what we do here.”
Labeling this entire genre as “spiritual,” divorces us from reality, and prevents the physical and mental aspects, as well as the backdrop, coming to the fore as just being, the way it is.
As a study, we must break down and dissect. But, if we want to be cured, we must allow no breakdown and distinctions. Mind, matter and spirit are all the One, appearing as distinctions. A sort of trick or play of consciousness. Waking up from distinctions might describe what we are doing, mist and ice returning to water.

I understand and resonate with the questioner. It feels like the effort is constantly catching myself and coming back to just being. It's the frustration of constantly realizing I am completely absorbed in my mind. The exhausting part is the "realization" that my attention has been nabbed by thought again and again and again. It DOES feel exhausting.... but just the initial single thought that comes up that "I" am lost in thought. It's exhausting because it's constant sometimes. Sometimes I can realize what is happening and then slip smoothly out of mind. More often though it comes with very visceral body sensations

It may be causes by some trauma stored in the body also. Your personnal awareness cannot stay for long in the body because some emotions stored in it are too hard to bare in the moment, which cause your awareness to move into the head. In this state you are deprived of a full experience of your awareness. I experience this change directly after an intense traumatic event. The visceral bodily sensations accompagnying your experience may also be some energy trapped in the body following some traumatic events that sometimes can have happened years and years before (specially in the case of complex ptsd). This energy needs to be released in order for the awareness to reinvest the body and be fully experienced.
I find that a lot of spiritual teachers often overlook the obstacle that trauma can be, and you Can sometimes feel that you are doing things wrong.
There is a lot of resources on youtube about traumas and how to heal if your are interested, more on a sommatic and psychological approach.

I remember Allan Watts called this specific question "a double bind" situation. There's absolutely nothing to find in achieving mental satisfaction that you can hold awareness of the awareness at will. It's just a control freak in "You" that's perusing a wild goose. You will never hold awareness captive because it's the essence of being and knowing without which you can't be aware of the awareness. You are always in the Knowing

A good teacher, especially after one has had a first realization. I understand the frustration of the questioner. Being aware of awareness, what does it mean when you have to experience with it? I used several years to find the answer, meanwhile I found a comfort hearing ABOUT the teachings and understanding what is possible on a theoretical level.
I had to put a lot of practical effort into finding that gap in the mind, but now its effortless. What I found frustrating with teachings like Spiras before I had the experience of being is the focus on the effortlessness.
My tip is to meditate with open awareness, just try to not control the mind at all. But you dont think every second, when i close my eyes there is thought, but there is also a black canvas. Seeing that was the start for me. When i close my eyes know now, there are no thought, its just silent (mind) - black canvas. Even when feelings arise I have this silence with me.
And I would not focus that much on being in the beginning because Its like beginning on level 8 in a video game. One of my favourite teachers, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, says "Meditation is about awareness, and awareness means knowing". I would focus on learning to notice different kind of experiences that you already know. One of the easiest for me is frustration, for example if you don't the bus. Seeing "ah, im frustrated and i know that im frustrated". That is to me a crucial skill to have. If you dont know that you are frustrated, how can you know being?
I would also use different kind of teachers. One of the persons that thought me most both on is Echart Tolle which explains great both when it comes to being, but also when it comes to how the conditioned mind actually work.

I often have the same confusion.. the problem for me was the words, "aware of being". The "of" makes being into an object and awareness into the instrument. Even the question, "Are you aware?" implies a distinction between the person and the awareness. All of this makes the meditation very mental. I say take the awareness out of the equation, since clearly that is a given. It is Being itself that we sink into in meditation. Or rather, that we find revealed in us, as us.

I believe that there is an effort, although the word effort may be very strong. And it is the effort to move attention from outside to inside. It takes effort because we are programmed for attention to constantly go outward. There is no effort in being because we always are. But there is an effort in being aware of being. Nisargadatta, Mooji, Gurdjieff say it. The issue is the confusion at the levels of consciousness or levels from which it is seen. From the point of view of identity there is an effort. Thought and attention is what will allow the body-mind to move more towards the satvic, which is the maximum it can achieve. From the point of view of consciousness there is only being... there is not even a point of view, nor "someone" who is aware of anything or has to make an effort towards anything. But, sadhana is bringing attention to the I Am, and that implies something that we could define as effort.

Great question. Problem is, anyone and everyone would say they're aware, including people who have no non dual or spiritual understanding. And all though that's space of awareness is always present, and every one can say they're aware, why teach people about this at all since awareness is ever present anyways and there's nothing to do. It's being taught in order to point people towards being aware of being aware. But the act of choosing to be aware of being aware or to stay aware of being, the act of focusing attention towards that which Rupert is pointing towards implies effort is needed. To point to awareness is to say, hey look at your ever present awareness. But for a person to decide to look requires effort. So that's her confusion. How can one do it without effort, when the moment one stops trying, they immediately get pulled into the content of experience?

I completely agree with the questioner here and I dont understand Rupert's answer. It takes me constant work and effort to glimpse my own awareness and the glimpses last for a moment only. During awareness of awareness there is an additional awareness of the difficulty of staying in that awareness, and awareness that it will soon finish.

      @TerratenienteFox 7 месяцев назад +2

Reading your description of being aware of being aware it seems like you have an idea of how it is and should be. It seems like it should not include thoughts. but thats not always the case. That is just awareness of a quiet mind. Because even when you are thinking, you are aware of being aware. When you percibe something, you are aware of being aware. why? Because all your perceptions are made of and are possible only by awareness. You need awareness to know anything. If you are alive you can be sure that you are aware of being aware. Where the mind takes your attention is something entirely diferent. And that's maybe what creates the sense of effort and confusion.

From the "Shiva Sutras" of Kashmiri Shaivism (multiple translations):
1:7 Even during the three ordinary, mundane (dualistic) states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep, one can still experience the fourth state of "turiya" (pure being) - because the three states are experiences that are experienced by a consciousness, and consciousness is that fourth state.
In other words, you are always aware if you simply notice it. Noticing your awareness requires non effort, but not effort.
Relax the body, allow what ever comes to mind to come in and go out. This is just bring present with what is.

Follow your empty mind...it is already still so why go there looking? It will now (You that is, the Self!) start working on the mind ("Self's "personhood- the other half of real You). Stop searching, start listenning to yourself, guiding, giving ideas to drop personal issues and start using the body and mind for greatness for humanitarian needs. These are two synonymous words in Rupert's terminology. He makes the difference between the infinite and the finite in order to draw attention to the infinite. That's why he uses Infinite Consciousness or Awareness or Being as opposed to the Finite Mind.

Why the mind is so complicated looking for the most dificult way to be aware of being aware???? We are aware 24/7

You can’t explain being aware. Once you think your not aware. We can only observe it in ourselves. By observing it as it observes.
The lady however was explaining how her perception changed ( the old woman young woman) . Which is the brain seeing patterns.

So then how do you unmix awareness from the content of experience without effort?

You can't 'be aware of being aware' all the time. Rupert seems to think being aware of being aware - or being aware of being - is the answer to everything. It ain't! It won't stop any physical pain if the pain is bad enough for example. It won't earn you any money (unless like him you can sit around chatting about this stuff all day and night). People get it in their heads that 'being aware of being' is some kind of end-game result. WRONG! You still have to live your life earn money etc.

It seems to me that awareness and being arise together you cannot separate them. So being aware of being as that statement says implies a gap, a knower and a known. And the analogy of the young woman/old hag picture demonstrates that. You cannot experience seeing both simultaneously. You can switch your focus back and forth. You can Know there are two, but that knowledge is of the mind, and it's impossible to be aware of being.

It seems to me that Being is prior to the concept of awareness. It feels like awareness is a dualistic concept that demands something to be aware of.
