  • Join spiritual giants Rupert Spira and Deepak Chopra as they delve into the transformative power of attending to painful emotions. In this conversation, based on a chapter in Spira's book "You Are the Happiness You Seek," they explore two powerful approaches: the Vedantic and Tantric, offering practical wisdom for turning suffering into joy.

Discover how embracing difficult emotions, rather than avoiding them, can lead to the ultimate realization of your inherent wholeness and happiness.
    Key topics:
🔑 Two approaches to painful emotions: Vedantic (distancing from content) and Tantric (embracing and merging with emotions).
🔑 Painful emotions arise from resistance: Not the emotion itself, but our resistance to it creates the negative experience.
🔑 Embrace and transform: Turning towards and welcoming even the most unpleasant emotions leads to their dissolution and reveals the underlying happiness.
🔑 Don't fight the current: Emotions are like currents in the ocean of awareness, not separate entities to battle. Merging with them leads to peace.
🔑 Your nature is happiness: Underlying all emotions is our true nature of joy, waiting to be rediscovered.
    Quotes:
“The one thing we have done all our lives is to resist painful emotions.”
“Our emotions are not like fishes in the ocean that we can catch and throw out, they're more like the way the ocean moves.”

Every time we see a tree, smell a flower, touch the delicate skin of a baby, tastes a tropical fruit or hear the chanting of a bird we are just consciousness perceiving and sensing consciousness. God bless both of you. Sat Chit Ananda.

I really enjoyed this talk as I am so interested in consciousness and Kashmir Shaivism. However, I find it surprising that mostly only „mental approaches“ to realize „the greater I“ are discussed. I tried it a long time, but if you don’t live in a monestary nowadays, then it’s gonna be a very long way to go.
That’s why I love the work of Igor Kufayev in his immersions. There the human body is not only an illusion of the Absolute, but I experienced it as a direct entrypoint to realize greater consciousness and peace.
For me, feeling the emotions somatically just helps tremendously, and I think working with the physical and subtle body is such a gift and fitting pathway for us modern people these days 😊
Consciousness loves to experience itself as a human body or as an emotion.

I thank you both, in the late eighties or early nineties I found Deepak , who helped me to start to see myself differently, I was by then catholic. In the early twenty one century ,I began to listening Spira, I know you both have helped me to be the one I am now , happy and in peace with myself. What I witnessed at this time , Deepak has an oriental mind and Spira an occidental mind, a complementary way of seeing who we are. Thank you both.

Wow two great minds at once, what a treat! thank you for both of your time. I am finding in my bewilderment how much I enjoy conversation of this nature, consciousness and how to gage emotion. Some say, step back from it, take it in so to know a response, (being detached) as I find it works to a point, because once I am in it, (feeling emotion) the chance to observe is gone. I can also understand that by making a thing (big and scary) is making it become (big and scary) so by consuming the thought of what it could be, but as too let it be that, will get me to the other side? Gosh I hope this made some sense? In my humble opinion, a Master Class would be wonderful!

On another way of dealing with this: not to allow anything bad to happen, self-defense till the point of vengeance.
When the best self-defense used to be minding one's own business, being centered within, master oneself. And Keep moving forward.
I believed everything can be solved by respectful awareness,
But then the social environment,.. got me to a thought: my contribution in mastering healthy respectful awareness, "holding space" for others to be, when they have been to far from being in that space in their daily lives.
As I was, before .. I met this group, and got to some sort of a spiritual awakening
Or was it becoming a mother and the Healthy Ego Took a Stand?
I can't point one thing out
It must have been many contributing factors.
    Thank you for being
    Blessing Perfection

I can say that I tried to analyze my unpleasant feelings or physical pain and if you think about them intensely and dissect them and ask yourself what it is that is bothering me it dissolves. You can no longer catch them. It takes time and concentration but it is possible. And because now I've heard that emotions are actually just a kind of chemical reaction or vibration I'm convinced that you can walk through fire to get behind it
    Thank you ❤

Dear Rupert can you please explain the devouring of emotions with mary and jane. Because everything was well so far with the vedantic approach that you have so many years been able to teach us but the tantric approach as you yourself pronounce it is exactly the opposite. So we are afraid now to collapse everything we have learned and that worked for us. What you are talking about right now is similar to modern psychology methods we come across everyday on media, not to say that they are not useful but this new explanation has just made everything somehow more complex and we makes us feel out of focus. To shortly express it is: we are confused.

I don’t get how the tanntric method works. It is so contradictory to embrace hateful emotions. I would need some specific examples how this works.

Therefore am I still / A lover of the meadows and the woods, / And mountains; and of all that we behold / From this green earth; of all the mighty world / Of eye and ear, both what they half create / And what perceive; well pleased to recognize / In nature and the language of the sense, / The anchor of my purest thoughts, the nurse/ The guide, the guardian of my heart, and soul / Of all my moral being.
William Wordsworth, Lines composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey

God didn't ''come'' to this reality to protect itself but to merge completely into experience even that of negative emotions
Only by processing fully emotion you can dissolve it not by taking a distance and dismiss it just because you know it's not real
God wants to engage wiith life even if it's not real

Many comment that Rupert has watered down Eastern teachings in peddling “happiness”.
Peace is fine, but happiness is too much of a sales pitch.
