"The saddest day of my life." How he held himself together God only knows. Surely the best comedy duo of all time, never to be replaced.
At 2:41 he just avoids saying happy as a sand boy and keeps his consumate professionalism . I didn’t find them funny personally but this was raw and hats off to the chap so soon after his friends passing
None better.
@@martinworld7214 I found some of their stuff funny, but I guess thats the real point, you didn't find them funny, but still recognise the professionalism and talent. Thats the mark of real pro entertainers, and also an open mind on your part.
How he managed to keep himself together and recall his career three hours after his partner for so many years passed is unbelievable and so admiring. They don’t make them of this Ilk anymore.
It's sad that if someone went on tv to talk about their deceased comedy partner so soon after passing today then social media would accuse them of not being upset enough or not really caring for their friends death 😔
Best comedy duo of all time ms cdf
Fitting tribute, well done, sir.
This is astonishing. Some 3 hours after Eric’s passing, and Ernie is talking on tv about his partner’s death. A pure gentleman. May they both rest in peace.
I consider myself fortunate to have been alive when this comic duo were at their best. Highlight of every Christmas was to watch the morecambe and wise shows. Every year they just got better. We have not seen any other duo come anywhere close since and unlikely to do so in the future. Pure geniuses RIP.
Smith and Jones?
One of the funniest & most accomplished of comedians of all time & my sense of humour was very influenced by his unique way..❤
Speaking as 62 year-old hairy man from Glasgow, I'm not ashamed to say that tears are in my eyes watching this. It's a beautiful television moment in which one of Britain's best loved public figures of all time bravely pays tribute to his equally beloved long-time colleague with immense respect, admiration and love.
Enormous credit is also due to John Stapleton. He conducts this interview with tremendous delicacy and humanity.
I suspect that only those of us who grew up during the peak years of the unparalleled popularity of Morecambe and Wise can truly appreciate just how much goodwill and outright love that the British public felt for them. They gave us so much sheer joy, pleasure and happiness that they won a place in all of our hearts.
The Christmas shows in particular were sensational cultural phenomena. Eric and Ernie were equally adored in palaces and prisons and all points in between.
The only people in Britain who didn't watch the Morecambe & Wise Christmas show were those who were either working, travelling, incapacitated or simply sour-faced curmudgeons.
They were arguably even more popular than The Beatles at their peak, at least in Britain.
I just wish that there were more clips of their classic sketches on RUclips. At the present time, I can't even find a straightforward upload of the timeless André "Preview" Greig Piano Concerto sketch.
God rest Eric and Ernie and also their brilliant script-writer, Eddie Braben. The joy and happiness which they gave to countless millions of people is immeasurable.
"Bring me sunshine in your smile.
Bring me sunshine, all the while...
In this world where we live there should be more happiness,
So much joy we can give to each brand new, bright tomorrow."
Tommy cooper went the same way ,gave great devoted service to our people ,rite till the end fantastic entertainer .
Not entirely the same way. Eric collapsed in the wings, which are the offstage areas on either side of the main stage where actors and crew members can wait. Still, "That's Show Business!" as Eric would probably say.
@@judgeberry6071 indeed he would of .
What a testament to his friendship and professionalism. To come on TV just hours after losing someone so important in his life to pay tribute is very brave. To be so composed, he must have been in shock still to a degree. I know I wouldn’t be able to do it.
He looks so lost there god bless them both 😢 really missed both of them
The guy came on 3 hours after his best friend of 40 years sudden death. What a pro. What a beautiful honour to his friend
They were friends, they worked together and occasionally socialised outside of work but they didn't live in each others pockets.
James Henderson
They must have been friends, they lived together. i’ve seen footage of them preparing breakfast to music.
They were both 100% first class
@James Henderson They used to go on holiday together, friends for 40 years
@James Henderson why??
How dignified of him to come in and speak so eloquently of his dear friend. ❤
Legend’s and irreplaceable and made Saturday evenings very funny and enjoyable thank you to both of you. God bless ❤️🙏🙌
Once Eric and fellow great entertainers started to leave us ,tv will never be same again Ernie mentioned Xmas show ,this is when they came into there own in festive season and Saturday night shows ,in 70 80 s great great fun times even as a young boy at time around 8 yrs old ,we loved these shows many probably wouldn't think so .
It's amazing that Ernie was able to go on tv within hours of Eric dying, it must have been very hard for him.
I was born in 1982 but was raised on Morecambe & Wise repeats and shows taped from the TV onto VHS tapes. We watched them so much, especially at Christmas, and they are so ingrained into my life as a result. I still watch them every Christmas, and throughout the year in fact, and they still make me laugh in a truly warm and happy way. I feel so fortunate that these two fantastic men gave us such joy.
Speaks so eloquently, when everything must have been churning up inside. Probably still in shock. Loved watching the two of them with my Mum and Dad when I was a kid growing up.
Such professionalism from the interviewer too, he handles it so well. Very gentle and very respectful.
Very dignified, honest and still in shock. Poor man.
I had the enormous pleasure to meet Eric face to face at The Night Out Club in Birmingham. I have NEVER met a more kind hearted, easy going, friendly gentleman in my life. It was truly an honour and a pleasure to meet and talk with him even for only a few precious minutes. They were and indeed still are precious minutes that will stay with me all my life.
I met Eric Morecambe in 1966 when he came to the gaumout Manchester to see my general manager ,Roy Raistrick ….Easy to talk to and very funny……How I miss all those fabulous days .2022 The world is so changed now and I am sad to say not for the better……Best WISHES TO ALL?
I must have been bout 6years old when Eric passed. Very sad. But I still just bout remember sitting round christmas day, watching comic duo. It was Christmas must.!!
I've always said Eric and Ernie are icons of comedy as we're and still is laurel and hardy both pair are comedy geniuses there will never be comedy like Eric and Ernie used to give us head and shoulders above anyone they will always be Kings of comedy RIP Eric and Ernie you will forever be with us and making us laugh
Just came across this. What a touching tribute from a genuinely nice man.
How he kept it together and gave such a measured interview with the sadness he was feeling is amazing.
Profoundly moving interview
Ive rewatched this again, Ernie did his friend proud. ❤🥺😥
I return to this often. It is a most beautiful interview and so personal. When he's asked about his future and replies with total candour ... 'I don't know. I know I've got a funeral to go to, that's about all'. Heartbreaking stuff. He so admired Eric, but also he loved him, terribly. Kudos to John Stapleton who was perfect also. Amazing to this went out on breakfast tv.
tv am tr df
If someone close to me died and some parasite asked me to comment, it'd be quite short and a little bit Anglo Saxon.
agree x
People with class and respect all around which is lacking these days. I was never a big fan but I can see why others might have been and the class in Ernie's response is especily lovely as it was so shortly after loosing his friend Eric.
@@garymitchell5899 Ern was a performer though and knew that he could be "on duty" 24/7 before the public. He probably thought Eric would give him his blessing. I think he showed great fortitude and integrity.
How Ernie kept it together is a testimony to His professionalism, i would have been crying like a baby.
Hard to imagine a sadder ten minutes of television.
Mr Wise is so transparently genuine in this very brave tribute ... a gentleman of the old school.
Awe you can see how heart broken he was at losing his dear friend....😪😪
The definition of a great double act, they both needed each other to make it work.and remained great friends.A very dignified interview from Ernie Wise
Morecombe and wise were absolutely brilliant they were fantastic. So sadly missed r.i.p. both of you.
Bless you both E & E
Huge Huge respect to Ernie Wise. So dignified, erudite and open at a time of what must have been great distress to him. This interview was an amazing tribute to his friend and work partner for so long. Bravo Ernie.
@James Henderson No he bloody wasn't! I'd say you were like a parrot repeating yourself, but at least they have personality!
@James Henderson WRONG! He explicitly stated he would continue working. He said "It's in the blood". Just hours after Eric's death.
Ernie Wise was a psychopath. He should not have been giving interviews moments after Eric's death.
@@user-bh1oy8kj5q A psychopath! :-) Come off it ! He was on autopilot here, after the man who was like a brother to him had just died. He was gracious and did what he thought was best.
@@user-bh1oy8kj5q You vile, disgusting little troll! How DARE you say that?
Beautiful interview. Their chemistry was terrific. Ernie wise was brilliant too.
Thank you lads part of my youth and adulthood were laughing at you top clowns and entertainers ty ms cdf
This is a quite remarkable interview so soon after Eric's death.
Man he looks so heartbroken..I remember this interview..a fantastic duo they were❤
Ernie touched on something very profound when he said "One day we'll realise just how funny Eric was." I think we are just beginning to appreciate this great duo.
you know they were pretty big back in the day, right?
Agreed I think the fact nobody has come close to these two is a sign of their talent.
Yes, indeed. They were wonderful.
And now people who weren't even born before not just Eric passing but Ernie passing as well are becoming fans of the iconic duo.
Beautiful tribute to Eric from his best pal.
God Bless them both.
What an incredible interview. Such dignity from Ernie, at such a terrible time. Kudos also to John Stapleton for handling the interview so sensitively.
If only we could go back to these days. Maybe one day. I miss them.
A wonderful and beautiful tribute. Without doubt the funniest duo ever in my life.
Those last few seconds... You can see he is almost about to break down and cry, but manages to hoist his head up proudly, twice, as he remembers how proud he was to be his friend, and to leave the audience smiling.
There will never be the likes of these two ever again. A one off. And fair balls to Ernie appearing on this hours after his great friend and partner had passed. Very moving.
40 years on and we still feel their loss.
There's sod all on tv that comes close now.
First time I have seen this. What great courage and natural dignity Ernie had. Ernie we mourn your passing as much as Eric's.
They were both great. They worked off each other perfectly and their comic timing was spot on. It seems such a long time ago now, when i would sit down with all my family and watch the Morecambe and Wise show especially at Christmas. I don't think Christmas was ever the same after Eric passed. RIP to both gents, they did themselves proud.
Thankyou Ernie.. I was only 8, but I remember thinking someone who gives so much to so many could never die so young...?
I don't think the class you show here is possible anymore, the candidness, the warmth, the openness, and the ingenuous feeling you portray and mirror from the public who lost an incredible soul, but also with yourself, a wonderful double act who went to peoples hearts, and weren't just for laughs. God Bless.
Class act.
Both of these men are sorely missed!! They were terrific.
I miss you both, you were and still are awesome.
Trickmyster46 That’s the trouble with life. ITS JUST TOO DAMN SHORT
You can bet they're entertaining in their own brilliant way up in the heavens! :-) God bless them!
it takes great talent to make people laugh and they had it the world is a poorer place when you lose people who brought you great joy god bless
I cant believe they interviewed Ernie the morning after.
He made people happy, the smile he created when you saw him didn’t fade the whole time he was on. They were perfect together and yes, it was the way they looked at each other, and perfect instinctive comic timing. And Christmas was never quite Christmas again without these two to laugh with.
That was an amazing thing Ernie Wise did. To go onto breakfast TV only hours after finding out Eric passed away.
I was going to say the same thing, this was the very early days of breakfast televison, and before rolling news existed so they were still feeling their way in how to handle breaking news in the early morning, but I'm not sure television today would expect an on screen lengthy interview from someone so closely linked to the newly deceased, they might instead interview him very briefly by telephone (voice only), or else interview someone else more losely connected to the deceased or their industry, then interview the closer people a few days to a week later. The whole interview is obviously very sad, but I think one of the saddest things is at one point in the middle of his interview he refers to his own career/prospects and happens to use the past tense, which makes me think he knew himself that either he wouldn't really 'work' as a solo act, or that he wouldn't have the necessary confidence or energy to establish himself as solo act after so many decades as part of a duo.
I was actually recently thinking about Eric's death, and how it must have affected Ernie, because of the recent death of Barry Chuckle, and how Paul must now be feeling. Whilst Paul has lost his actual brother, Ernie probably felt just as much for Eric as if he was a brother, but the real contrast between the two cases is that Paul is already saying that he wants to continue as a entertainer (Barry's wish for him), and already has some solo material for club appearances (Without telling Paul he was ill, Barrry had contrived to express disatisfaction and weariness with the club appearances they were doing together, so that he could pull out of doing them, so Paul would have to do them solo, and have to work up some solo material etc), whereas Ernie seems here as if he's resigned to his own career being over, but then again this is 3 or 4 hours after Eric had died, so perhaps it just hasn't sunk in for Ernie yet that he could do something solo.
He knew he would never work again.
The Ernie Wise Biography painted a very sad tale after EM had passed away. You could tell his friends and family were willing him to retire but he couldn't
Both proper Gentlemen, Still the Greatest for many!
Old school, no media managing a message, completely sincere. Respect
What a lovely tribute from Ernie Wise so soon after the death of his life long comedy partner Eric Morecombe, these two were the epitome of comedy the likes we'll never see again, no smut, no swearing but just pure comedy, i hope these two are still creasing people up with laughter in another world RIP
Loved these guys the best of british
What a lovely man, thank you both for the joy you gave us.
Aw man, I just stumbled on to this. Never seen it before. One of the hardest things I've watched in a time and how Ernie could even talk coherently, hours after that shock, is beyond my ken. Still, a beautiful tribute from a special man. We were so very fortunate to have them both. Unique and timeless...
Remarkable
christmas wasnt christmas without eric and ernie
One of the best one liners ever “he wont sell much ice cream going at that speed”
I always use it. 😁
I laughed so much at that line, I ached!
I still say that today lol
I used that very line only a couple of days ago
Eddie Braben wrote that line and nearly all the classic Eric and Ernie BBC years stuff. He eventually succumbed to a severe nervous breakdown due to pressure of work and stopped writing. When E&E moved to "the other side" the quality of their work dropped without his amazing input.
Ernie Wise handled that very well under the circumstances. The interviewer John Stapleton was also sensitive to the situation and never became mawkish or sentimental.
Or rude and pushy
It was very well handled. John would know it was a mere matter of hours between Ernie getting the bad news then the interview. He would still be in shock and tired too.
And I think a lot of trust on Ernie's part that he would be treated right in the interview - no attempt at sensationalism, just sharing of sadness and finding the words.
Ernie saw it as an opportunity for publicity. Elsewhere on that day he said he was carrying on in The Business. Cold? Yes.
@@racheldemain1940 Ernie was not in shock. He had been preparing for this for years.
Amazing duo still watch them today. ❤️❤️💜💜💜❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
They were magic. They loved each other and we loved them.
I consider myself very fortunate to have grown up during the 70s when these two very funny but true gentlemen were on our TV screens. Christmas Day was so special back then, Queen's speech followed by The Morecambe and Wise Christmas show. Television was much better back then in my view. Rest in Peace Eric and Ernie. Thank you.
indeed! indeed! miss those days! they have never been the same.....christmas was measured by how good the morecombe and wise christmas show was!!!! mum dad me nan my brother.....happy memories! i loved these guys!!!!!!

Ernie Wise, eloquent gentleman, bless him and Eric.
Love these guys
A respectful, dignified and sincere interview. Both parties behaved in an exemplary manner.
This kind of civility and sensitivity will probably never be seen again.
I remember this event well. The newscaster was professional but i could see he was genuinely upset when he broke the news about Eric Morecambe's death. As someone whose entire childhood was interlaced with Morecambe and Wise T.V. shows, I was heartbroken to hear about his passing.
A very, very unique comedian.
Thoroughly professional interview from Ernie who must have been in bits internally.
RIP Eric and Ernie.
One of the saddest days hearing Eric had died RIP to Eric and Ernie best double act of all time
Absolutely, my favourite duo, seeing them even in 2023… timeless and funny
"Through the years I think they'll realise how great he was" - and forty years later people still love them. How true that was.
All those years and still so sad..great duo, great comedians and great men
What a man !! Well done Ernie !!!!
What a lovely man
TV-am wasn't part of my tv 'diet' then, and I can probably still count the number of times I've watched breakfast television in 40 years .
All credit to Ernie for doing this, and to John Stapleton for getting the tone just right.
Eric and Ernie epitomised Christmas, the world is a sadder place without them making people laugh.
RIP Eric and Ernie, sadly missed by millions.
Very tough to watch this - massive respect to Ernie for keeping himself together, so sad
Greatest comedians ever. No one comes close.
Loved The Morecambe And Wise Show.....Eric's Face Was All It Took....Ernie Was The Best Partner....Magical Chemistry....Best Double Act Ever........So Well Loved Still.
The heartbreak is so apparent it's literally heartbreaking
Ernie was great. He didn't try to fake stuff and always supported Eric's massive public acclaim. After Eric died I realised what an incredibly lucky strike it was that those two got together and really admired Ernie's loyalty to their image in the public eye. True professionals both.
One of the great comedians
Monday nights. Morecambe and Wise on TV. One of the very few shows that could reduce me to tears of laughter.
So incredibly sad. I truly felt for Ernie Wise as it seemed like one half of him had been ripped away. I have no idea how he maintained his composure during that interview. As a kid in the 70's, I loved their shows. I especially enjoyed when they had famous people on as guests and Eric and Ernie would create mayhem! It was classic British comedy. When Eric died, I was an NCO in the Army and still enjoyed them. It was a great shock to hear the news. He was gone too young.
Unbelievable resolve and courage to appear on TV hours after his death.
Just had to look at him and he made me laugh as a kid. Tommy Cooper too. They had a certain presence that's difficult to explain. Natural comedians. Rare these days.
I have never seen Ernie look so sad!
Ernie Wise displayed great dignity and courage throughout this interview.
You can tell it hasn't really hit him yet, that time of bewilderment and matter-of-factness, I had it for a fortnight after my nan passed then out of nowhere I cried the most primal cry of my life, I wouldn't wish the death of a loved one on anyone, RIP Eric & Ern
god bless you Ern
What a lovely interview. Much respect to Ernie.
Poor Ernie.... to be doing this interview so soon after hearing the news that he'd lost Eric, his partner of so many years. The love they had for one another always shone through in their comedy and Ernie must have been in such shock at this point. RIP to both of them.... irreplaceable comedy legends.
Little Ern looked so sad. God bless him and I’m sure Eric would have been proud of him for doing this interview so soon after Eric’s passing. Now they are both gone RIP and thanks for the laughter.
Nuf said !! Love them and will miss them so much! 😞🏴
What a lovely man and interview that was.Ernie that was such a moving tribute....Legends the both of you.
