- Recently recovered from an old videotape! Here's an interview with one half of arguably Britain's best ever double act, Eric Morecambe.
He was in Jersey looking for Ernie, apparently...

You could tell he knew deep down his heart was going to get him in the not too distant future after his major op. You are seeing in real time here a comic genius dealing with the reality of his own not too distant demise. Sobering in many ways.
And very sad. He knew his time was limited, and yet towards the end he ended up flogging himself to death. Like many others, he kept going because of his comedy lifelong partner. Mind you , it didn't help that he always seemed to have that foul pipe in his gob..
He really was magnificent. God rest his beautiful soul.

Loved watching Eric and Little Ern on the telly with my family in the late 70's when I was about 12 or 13. There was no smut or innuendos... just good family entertainment.

A wonderful man I was very lucky to see him he was at Lord's cricket ground watching the test match against England and New Zealand in 1978 . All of a sudden I heard his unmistakable laugh,.. I turned around and he was giving an interview to a TV crew . It was amazing to see him so close up .... Rip Eric ✝️
He was a lovely man, and a brilliant comedian. Always watched morecambe and wise when I was a kid, and still watch the repeats.
🇬🇧🇫🇴I went today to Morecambe 5/9/21 to see his status by the promonade. Morecambe is a lovely place to visit. I had a tea at the cafe on pier where the light house is. Greetings from Casablanca Morocco to my wonderful nation, the brits. if only I had been in England.

@@johnmatthews273 I would say that in terms of being an English comedian that appeals to the English sense of humour Eric was king, Stan Laurel focused more on the physical side of humour which has broader appeal.
Beautiful man!! First time I have seen him in a serious interview. Fabulous comedy. The man was a comic genius. The Christmas shows were the best ever. R.I.P x

The biggest testament to his character was how his kids friends would knock their door and ask if Mr Bartholomew was coming out to play, a sweet and wonderful man, sadly missed
Brilliant man, put him together with Little Ern and what a team. From an era when comedy was funny.
Difficult to think that this great comedian and actor was to leave us four years later, what a great legacy though, a treasure trove of wonderful memories.
This man was born to make to make people laugh and with his fast wit that’s exactly what he did , so so funny .
The day he died has really stuck with me.. I realised how tragic life could be to die reletively young like that.
He died two months after I was born.
@@travellingshoes5241 He died a couple of weeks after my 16th birthday and, having grown up watching him, his death is the only 'celebrity' one that has upset me to this day.
It takes a lot of hard work to make brilliance look effortless.

One of those rare comedians that was comfortable enough in his own skin to chat casually away from the schtick, no need to force a gag, just a mind that went that way naturally, a true master of his craft
These two give my family so many happy times and I don't say that lightly.

It's heartbreaking to see that in spite of his quick jokes and giggles, his eyes twinkle - may be the studio lights - but I believe it's tears... Especially when he says "otherwise there's no future"...
wow....I had to look. He had 4 years to live. Quite a sentence 4 years younger than me. I'm already dead as May 28th was 7 months ago. That brings it home.
I cant get over how different his accent is when he just talks seriously.

Yes he'd only got another 3 and half years to live in November 1980 but he didn't know that then.

Always wondered how much of his lines were ad lib in the Morcombe and Wise show, from this, obviously many.
Lovely, funny and very inteligent man. Sadly missed; when you look at some of those who followed going for cheap crass laughs, later generations have missed out!.

I watched a lot of english comedy when I was a kid, and this guy made me laugh more than anybody. Although I got in a couple of fights for slapping my friends the way he did Ernie.
Without doubt the funniest man ever born in England ......his ad libs were superb and he happily took a joke on himself.

Britain has produced some comedy legends but I don't think that any of them have ever been or will ever be as beloved as Eric.

He really wasn't well at this time. He had had a second heart attack the year before and had (I understand) been given 3 months to live. In the event, he lived another 5 years and did a lot of writing and performing in those years.
The bypass enabled him to live an extra five years.

Yea I have seen that in other pictures Eric was frailer but he carried on bless him
Poor Eric, to live under a death sentence, knowing the next heart attack could be fatal, must be very frightening. What a dear, sweet, warm hearted man he was - and a comic genius, of course. Thanks for all the laughs Eric!

Soooo quick witted
He came back with witty responses almost before the words left the interviewer's lips. This was an older school of comedy that didn't make fun of others (except Little Ern and Des O'Connor, of course).

I remember watching Eric Morecambe when growing up and am the same age as his son Steven, so ten at that point and in my last year at junior school. I also remember hearing about his premature demise some two weeks before my fourteenth birthday!

Eric. Beautiful man. So funny. Loved his wise cracks about his heart. He us to put his chin on the left chest and shout "keep going you fool!".
I can Imagine he would have been a rather difficult man to interview. Being so spontaneous and always at a million miles an hour is what made him the comic genius that he was, but I reckon having an everyday life relationship with the guy would have been exhausting and frustrating at times.
From what I gather when he was on he was on but when he was off he was off, a quiet fisherman away from the camera, most manic performers tend to be that way, ok he was always looking to get a gag in but quite a generous interviewee able to answer sensibly when comfortable, I detect a little post-illness nerves here
@@npc3po301 From what I've heard from people who knew him well he could be quite an anxious nervous person at times. The idea of performing just by himself would never have appealed to him because he liked to have someone to bounce off and share the load with. Meeting Ernie Wise at such a young age was the making of both of them. Him and Tommy Cooper's death a few weeks before Eric's signaled the end of an era and the beginnings of a new era. Personally I didn't mind the alternative wave that followed but it's a shame that his type of humour seemed to die with him and Ernie.
I have the two of a kind, from 1962 they were both very young, in them days.

Gary Morecambe, son of Eric said that after Christmas lunch in 1983 his dad spoke to him about the future of their shows on ITV in 1984. Apparently they were preparing to sign a new contract which would see their regular autumn series axed, and instead two one hour specials would be produced per year, one of them would always be a Christmas show, the other in September to launch ITV autumn schedules. This ensure Eric and Ernie would remain on ITV but had less work to do. That was the plan, and Eric was excited about regaining the Christmas Day slot for their show in 1984. Since 1981 they never had their Christmas show aired on Christmas Day due to LWT controlling the networking of shows on that day from 1981 to 1983 inclusive.

Morecambe and Wise are far dearer to me than Benny Hill, Mr Bean or Monty Pythons. I have no idea why those shows became more famous worldwide. I mean I only discovered Eric and Ernie 3 years ago on youtube, while Benny Hill and Mr Bean were broadcast extensively in my country in the 90s.

Brilliant comedian and probably one the funniest two man act. It's sad in some ways though, that he can't seem to turn the 'comic' off in an interview. It's almost as though that's the only thing that identifies him. It's probably a common thing with comedians. The brilliant Tommy Cooper was the same.
There are exceptions. I remember seeing Rowan Atkinson being interviewed (the first time for me) and he was dead serious all the way through. Max Boyce, the Welsh comedian, was an avid cricket fan and was in Australia and invited as a co-commentator with Richie Benaud. I was waiting for the 'funnies' but just got a professional style commentary on the game.

So odd to hear him mention Monty Python ... not sure why. Just don't associate them with the same era at all, though of course they were.

The end graphic for ITV should've deleted the word "Channel" as ITV is an umbrella organisation for the group of Britain's commercial *STATIONS!*
The channel islands ITV along with UTV in Northern Ireland maintain their original names even though ITV plc fully own them. This was always part of the ownership deal. All other ITV regions in England do not have that luxury and of course STV in Scotland remains firmly independently owned.
It is correct for the era when ITV as a identity was very much in the Background and the regional stations identities were to the fore. It was after the government fixed the new franchises in the really 90s that the ITV identity became much more visible, and with the loss of Thames amongst other things the ITV network lost a source of good output. Carlton ("winners" of the London franchise) was a trojan horse, the franchise awarded for political ends and on the basis of a projected schedule that turned out to be totally false with not one of the promised programmes ever making it to air.
Then along with the dumbing down of the networks content came the almost complete loss of regional Identity, with "opt out" slots being removed for what is in effect a nationwide schedule with regional news as everything became centrally owned and rebranded as ITV lost the " Independent" From its own identity as it subsumed the Independent regional companies, something that should have been obvious to the audiences once ITV as a Network controller imposed a national corporate (ITV) that the independence was being stripped away, the decline in quality was very evident.
@@warweezil2802 That truly is a shame, because while watching shows from England, especially London Weekend's comedies, I viewed the British station identification methods as the very template Australia should've adopted. Instead, our stations, shy and timid as they were/are, hid behind their allocated channel numbers(the channel number was NEVER* intended for identifying the station, that was the sole purpose of the call-letters). Oh how I wished the Australian stations would follow the British example.
@@neilforbes416 The sad thing is that Thames who held the London araa franchise from around 69 to 92 actually had company history in one firm or another going all the way back to ATV holders on one of the original ITA franchises at the founding of the Independent Television Authority in 1954. The regions all had their own distinct identities and styles, the local franchise where we moved when I was a kid (originally Harlech but later rebranded to HTV) even remade a quiz show that was already produced elsewhere but made it regional for this area. It became channel 3 by default as after BBC2 started and TV's with push button channel selection appeared most were set up in order of BBC1 top BBC2 next then ITA of whatever region flavour you had, some are lucky and had reception of 2 regions, we used to get HTV (Wales) and Westward - until TSW won the franchise and bought up Westwards facilities and library.
The Independent Television Authority (ITA) became the Independent Broadcasting authority around 1980 reflecting an earlier change that had brought the new commercial radio services under its remit in the early 70s, subsequently several regulators were combined to create 1 overarching regulator.
@@warweezil2802 I saw one of those push-button station selector TVs on display a a *Radio Rentals* shop in Newcastle, NSW, here in Australia. It was a "Baird" brand colour TV set but was only showing a colour bar, no programme content. If memory serves, I think it stood on lathe-turned legs where some sets had the big speaker cavity where a big 10-inch or 12-inch speaker would deliver a real rich sound quality, but others, standing on legs had that little 5-or-so-inch oval speaker just below the controls. The controls were to the right of screen, starting from the stop, station selector buttons for BBC1 then BBC2, then from there down was ITV1 to ITV9, below them came the volume, tone, brightness, contrast, colour and tint controls(tint controls on a PAL-system set? Valve sets apparently needed such a control). A my guess, the station selector buttons also turned the set on or off. To turn on, you'd either push in or pull out the button(or knob) for the wanted station, then tun it clockwise or anti-clockwise to fine-tune the station.
Even in a casual interview he's hysterical his wit was so quick, its so sad his heart gave way, the signs were there though and he was well aware of them, he probably shouldve taken them.
He should have retired in 1979.
This, to me, demonstrates how Eric - to actually hit the mark with his humour - needed Ernie. In this setting of being interviewed, his attempts weren't that funny. More annoying actually. And before anyone gets upset, I loved these two guys' comedy (at the time).
In fairness, many, many comedy greats were dreadfully uncomfortable with interviews and they are not a great watch. He looks anxious - as did Hancock, Harry H. Corbett, and even Kenneth Williams at times (depending on the interviewer).

Eric and Ernie did The Ed Sullivan Show 6 years running in the 60s. Ed loved them but the Americans didn't seem to get them. Perhaps the comedy was too clever.....
In one of many books I read about them, it was said that Americans couldn't understand Eric because he spoke too quickly. Even Bob Hope said he used to work slower in the US than in the UK
