The Secret To Natural-Looking Watercolour Greens - It's Easier Than You Think

  • Hello Art Lover!
    This video is another from my archives of clips that are lurking in my phone, waiting for their moment in the spotlight. The horses in this short film are too beautiful to keep in the dark, and at last they can stretch their legs and gallop through the wild flowers once more.
    This was sketched on a June day, when the greens are at their brightest (actually second brightest, after May). It's such a dreamy time of year in Galway and you wouldn't want to be anywhere else. The horses' magnficence inspired me to do the artisitic thing with the whisper overlaid on the audio, it's not a mistake. I hope you like the effect because I will probably do more creative things like that. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
    But don't be afraid of greens in nature, when you are using watercolour. The secret is simple: they're rarely used unmixed. Sap Green is beautiful and versatile but the clue is is the name - it's for the freshest, most garish of spring greens that are around for about a minute in spring, when the sap is rising. After that it's plus / minus browns and yellows in watercolour to tone the greens down to a natural-looking shade. Easy.
    However, I do love a ready-to-use natural green, and the two I mention in the movie are superb. Highly recommended!
    (In another video I will explain how to combine light and dark to complete the natural look of foliage.)
    By the way, I should included a disclaimer: De Atramentis have, in the past, sent me free inks. I sell paints by Roman Szmal (because they are amazing and I love them and Roman Szmal is a lovely man) and watercolour sketchbooks, just the A5 and A6 sizes, by Hahnemühle. I don't have a relationship with Rosemary & Co. but they did send me a free brush once. I would love to be a supplier for Sailor (if you can arrange this, please get in touch) but so far it has not come to pass.
    Enjoy!

      Oh, sorry! Just a throwback to my whole family speaking that way and, in fact, my whole neighborhood. Hope I didn’t offend.

    I’m loving your videos! Thank you for sharing your work with the world. I’m new to watercolour and want to try more pen and wash. Could you tell me please how often do you need to clean your pen? Do you completely empty it? Do you have any problems with it leaking when you travel? Thanks 👋 from NZ

    Hi Roisin, Will Daniel Smith's Undersea green be close to tout Aqua Green?

    • @roisincure
      @roisincure  2 месяца назад

      I can’t say for sure, I don’t know Aqua Green. You might mean Aquarius Green! Just figured that out. They’re not dissimilar but my tube of undersea green sits there unused in my collection.
