How To Trap Your Life In A Sketchbook...In Ink And Watercolour

- As we all know, life passes so quickly. Many of us love to capture special moments on camera (make that all of us). But what if you could capture your life in a different way? Slowly? By creating a sort of hand-drawn photo?
When you carry a tiny sketchbook with you wherever you go, it becomes a natural extension of your everyday experience. I carry all my kit in a tiny bag, and because it also has a pocket for my phone and glasses, and even space for a couple of cards, I don't need anything else. That means that whenever I have an unexpected moment - anything from half an hour up to a free afternoon - I get out my sketchbook and zone out of the noise and into the the quiet of the moment.
The wonderful thing about trapping your life in a sketchbook is that not only do you have a beautiful record of your world in art, but it is through a large volume of drawing and painting that you get really, really good. Your own style takes shape with enough volume of work drawn from life (always from life!) and what's more, you'll find that people are just lovely. I can't tell you how many wonderful experiences I have had with onlookers!
A small kit is key. You'll find other videos on my channel describing mine, but you can adjust it according to your own preference. Keep it small, and it'll go everywhere with you.
So take my advice and get sketching, in a small sketchbook! You will be happy you did.
Love
Róisín
This felt like you were reading a story book with beautiful pictures!
That’s lovely, thank you!
Yes, that’s what I thought too! So nice ❤
I loved this video. It showed me the heart and soul of an artist. When you have that heart and soul, you can’t stop yourself from always analyzing scenes of daily life and how to draw them. The difference between you and me is that you really do draw them. LOL I need to get my act together and just do it! Thanks for your video. From Kentucky, US.
Just DO it Janet! Get yourself an adorable kit and bring it everywhere and you will just do it despite yourself. I am the living proof!
I love your sketchbook tours! ❤
Thank you!
I love seeing what people have in their sketchbooks, but yours captured my attention the most because you turned it into a sort of art storytelling - so compelling. Very glad I found your channel ❤❤

Thanks JoAnne! I’ll tell Reuben, he’s looking at me 🤣
What a wonderful video! Thank you for continuing to inspire me to just go out and sketch something.
Go for it! And thank you 🤩
What a lovely video. Thank you. I am just starting on keeping a sketch book diary/journal and I found your one very inspiring. Yesterday, which some are saying was the solstice, others sticking with the 21st; I caught the sun from my flat, rising between two rooves, so I have made a drawing of it. I also did a sketch of my sketchy sun salute (in my nightshirt). I am currently confined indoors due to a heavy cold. Hopefully I'll soon be feeling better and I can go out and about. The following week I'm off to Northumberland and hope I can improve my technique there. I also sit and draw my living room in the evenings whilst watching telly, as you say good for practising perspective.
Thanks so much and it's great to hear you can continue to enjoy your sketching whilst confined indoors!

I love your loose style, your sketchbook and your storytelling! You make me want to move across the "pond" (I'm in the U.S.) just so we could hang out and paint. You are lovely (and lively) as well.
That’s very sweet, thank you for saying so! Well you can “hang out” through my zillions of classes on my website, I think you’ll like them! ❤️

You certainly are I have subscribed I’m so guilty of having all paint gear and never using it for fear of messing a page up! Which is ridiculous ha I gotta just go with the flow and create I love the burger ! 🍔
I have some great tricks for not messing up a page, I think it’ll make a great video so thank you for the idea. I also hate messing up a page. We cannot have that in our beautiful sketchbooks!
Bonjour from the Southwest of France!
I enjoy your videos very much and I've gained a lot of useful info and inspiration for my pursuit of Urban Sketching. I started using fountain pens this year - including a bent nib Fude pen - and they're a great drawing tool. I've also been trying different color inks, inspired by your use of red ink. I taught myself to paint way back in 1973 and I've made art in every imaginable medium, but in all that time, I never used sketchbooks as an end in themselves.
I teach drawing and painting, including a summer plein air course, but this summer I've also organized an Urban Sketching group where instead of teaching I get to be just another artist in the group.
Anyway, thanks for your videos and your dedication to your art practice. If my wife and I ever find ourselves in your part of the world, we'll invite you out for a glass. Jim
I’m delighted to have been a part of your art journey. I do wonder about sketchbooks because I never sell anything, but I guess I sell the shovels rather than the gold, which is nice because you get to share the gift of happiness. I hope we meet for that glass someday. All the best to you and your wife! Róisín
Hello Roisin, I'm very happy to have found your channel:)). I love sketchbook tours. When we go on holiday to England I always have my sketchbook with me. When I see that you also paint your room I think that I have ot use it more often at home. It's so much fun and you have beautiful, more conscious memories when you sketch. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos and learning a lot more. Thank you very much for sharing. Loved to see your little dog:). Wish you all the best. Gabi from Germany.
So lovely to hear from you Gabi. Yes, the home is so full of beautiful things to sketch - and even the ordinary things are worth sketching too! And thank you for the warm words about my little dog :)
No way you mentioned my home town Nancy in a video. What a sweet coincidence. I hope you had time to watch the Place Stanislas, hang out in the Pépinière, or drink a coffee au Flo (close to the station). You have a wonderful talent to capture moments of life. Wishing you all the best.
I have a video dedicated to my trip there, scroll down about a month and you’ll find it! We had a great time there in April ❤️
Such a lovely sketch book and brilliant narrative.
Thanks so much Gerry, glad you enjoyed it :)
Oh my gosh!!! Honestly, this was the most fun and fascinating sketchbook tour I have ever seen!!!🎉 You're an incredible artist, and I love hearing your commentary throughout.
Thanks so much Lisa! That is such a wonderful thing to hear!

Hi from Cork. Loving your channel, came across it a few weeks back. Love the painting of your mother and the Wicklow hills. I’ll have to check out your channel on how you do this portraits with water colours. Been experimenting with ink and watercolour but honestly loving your style with them. Just superb. Cheers Colin
Thanks a million Colin! I’ll be spilling all the beans on using watercolour on my channel. I was teaching online until very recently so now that I’ve stopped I’m going to bring it all to RUclips. But if you want it in a hurry there are nearly 200 classes on my website 🤯🥰
@@roisincure thanks Róisín for replying. I’ve always been a photography person (my channel!) but honestly water colours has me hooked!!! I’ll definitely check out your website. We’ll be up your direction in august to enjoy the fantastic scenery and life of Galway. If there are any painting get togethers or classes up that way in august you would recommend let me know. Again loving the channel. Been meaning to comment for ages. Was so nice to wander across an Irish channel. ☘️ Cheers
@colinosullivan I agree Colin, there’s nothing like finding someone talented who’s also homegrown! As it happens I have one place left in my urban sketching workshop 15th to 17th August but companions are welcome. Other than that yes, our group (Urban Sketchers Galway) meets weekly and they’re a lovely bunch, very friendly and laid back. Every Monday and sometimes on a Saturday too. Two hours usually and free as the air.
@@roisincure I would have loved to have made your workshop. Unfortunately we’d arrive mid way through the 17th. A real bummer. I’ll have to check your site and make a trip specifically for one of the workshops. I’ll see if the urban sketchers have a get together on and if it works. Cheers
@colinosullivan yes definitely check them out. Meanwhile I’ve just been booked for a week in the south of France 23rd to 30th August 2025. There’s also Dunmore East this year, 27th-29th September 😁
Love your creativity I always try to be so real/photographic, wan5 to let myself go, you know what I mean !
Draw enough and you finally get bored of trying to be perfect all the time!
Thanks my grandma is from county west of Dublin, don’t want to pronounce it in case I get it wrong (think Co Meath). X

Just paused the video to say that I love a cup of tea (doesn't matter what cup) but the tea. 😂
as my husband says, "tea doesn't solve everything, but it's a good start"!
What a calming video! I felt that you were telling a story - but then you are! Your (our) sketchbooks are the story of our day to day life and adventures. I have read about the creation of your sketchpocket, on your website. I cant seem to find it anywhere to purchase. Please, please tell me where i can find one. Beautiful sketches (love the limited colour palettes mixed in with full colour sketches), beautiful voice, beautiful video xx
You’re so kind Joanne. Thanks so much for your wonderful words. As for the SketchPocket it’s in manufacture at the moment. I am so excited to have it because right now I have to use the sample the factory sent me in a very boring grey-blue fabric that they use to make samples in progress. The final version is going to be made of black (or off-white) cactus leather with the prettiest thick felt lining in my fabric with watercolour tubes on it. I wrote it up in a recent blog post, don’t know if you saw it. There’ll be a waiting list up very soon as I’m being asked every day for it!
I will go and find your other blog posts. Please could I be added to your waiting list 🤞
What a lovely sketchbook. Thankyou 😊🇬🇧

Unbelievably beautiful sketches. Enjoyed seeing all of them. Does everyone in your family draw?
Thank you Jennifer! Yes, all of them of all the generations ❤️
AMAZING. I’m too much of a perfectionist to sketch like this - I wish I could!! It’s magnificent! Maybe I’ll use a small (very small lol) sketchbook to give it a try. Artists like you inspire me! ❤
Thank you. We’re all perfectionists, but there are many ways to make something beautiful even if it goes wrong along the way. No one wants horrible pages in their sketchbooks but one must try…use cheap paper if you don’t dare mess up!
Oh stumbled across this! Thank you!

What a lovely sketchbook!! And you are SO fortunate to share the creativity with family. I would LOVE to be sketching in a field or park or city cafe with my mom or daughter or sister. It would be the cherry on the top of life!! Thank you for sharing. :)

I really enjoyed looking at your book, I have been doing something similar for a few years. No training just going for it. So lovely to see others, and yours is beautiful x
Thank you! Isn’t it the BEST activity there is for our busy lives, in which we’re always doing something for someone? So great to be able to tie our creative practice with that.
Always enjoy your beautiful sketchbook tours! Thanks for sharing!
Your erosive Tyra ❤️
I love your sketches ❤ It made me a bit sad about my owns, I have reached a plateau and been having a creative block at the moment. You’re making me want to get some super granulating watercolours!
We all get those. I’m very conscious that I’m on a seam of creativity at the moment. The last time I got one of those I went to an exhibition of Japanese prints from the 18th century and the creative block vanished overnight. I hope I’ll always be able to do that!
@@roisincure That sounds awesome! I think I need to cram in and practice my drawing, I find it disappointing. I began drawing four years ago and could notice a steady improvement but recently it has stalled. I think I have your book on Drawing expressive people, will do some copies from it and see what can I spark in me. :) Thanks for replying!
@@InkNSap draw from life. Use a brush with almost invisibly watery watercolour and if you mess up wash it away and go again when the page has dried. Use the reverse of your fude nib and you won't notice the finer line if it's wrong. But always draw from life.
Just found you today your a very talented artist and story teller hugs lots ❤❤❤

You should see what I did when I started out! The fun is in the practice! And thanks 🤩
I love your work and I could listen to you all day
Thanks Jane! 😘
How wonderful! “Learning thru play”. More people would surely express themselves artistically if they could only set aside their adultness + have a play to learn to draw + paint (or many other skills for that matter). You’ve encouraged me to have that mindset about a number of things I want to learn. So glad I’ve discovered your channel Roisin. I even wrote down your lovely name phonetically to ensure I’m saying it correctly. Thank you so much + cheers from Australia.
Hello and thank you for your lovely words. I also wish people would see the value in play, and not get so hung up on being taken seriously. But you’re asking people to be self-confident enough to do that which is a tall order I guess! Great to have you here.
I really wish I had the time to create like this... I mean, each of those pages would take me over 2 hours and wouldn't look as good. 2 hours! Wish I could dedicate that much time to producing something worth looking at.
The good news is when you work very small you don’t need much time. If you have time to scroll on your phone, you have time to sketch! The trick is to always have your kit with you and grab spare moments to draw whatever happens to be in front of you!
@@roisincure How long do each of those drawings/paintings take you?
@pesto12601 usually about an hour
@pesto12601 but it’s a pleasure, others might watch TV or read. And until recently I was sketching for teaching material. So I had to sketch for work. Now it’s just for pleasure.
@@roisincure Yeah.. an hour isn't bad.. guess I just need to stop doing others things an give it a go every day.. will try!! Thx.

I’m amazed that you manage to pack so much into your miniature sketchbook. I loved the charcuterie (drool drool) and it’s interesting with your cups as I’ve been doing that recently too but not quite so posh. I so loved doing the seagull recipe with you and went onto do a further 2 ….. rock cakes and gingerbread….sticking with Silas the Seagull. I was so inspired and on a roll. I love your videos with the hilarious narrative. Keep them rolling in Róisín and we’ll try and spread the love.
You’re the best Marie Louise! I’m experimenting with the next video: it’s literally the footage of sketching a scene in its entirety, although my battery died before I was finished so it’s not the whole thing. Pity because it’s that last bit that always brings the Wow! Anyway I’ll see how it goes. And thanks so much for your support! Oh and I’m thrilled you did a couple of fun recipes, it can be very addictive! 😍

Happy accident I found you and I subscribed. My mouth fell open at the first page, love your artistic style. The nuns told me I couldnt draw 50 years ago and so I never have tried to since. I gotta try the paint tube page even though ive no idea where to start. Pencil an paper methinks 😂
British Kate in New York
Howdy Kate! Don’t mind the nuns, what do they know? You most certainly can draw, as long as you can write your name! I think the paint tube is a great idea but you should start with something in your house, something inconsequential!
@roisincure TY for the inspiration. I was 3 when they told me that. I was at the same private school until 18. The whole time I had to sit at the back of any art class and read my Bible. What they know ( knew then) was how to damage a child...
@madhattersoriginal6258 take art back! If it’s any consolation I’ve been rejected about 75 times (kind of lost count after that) and continue to be every time I apply for anything. Seriously! Happens to people who are different from the herd, you probably were too. It’s a strength not a weakness!
Your response was balm to my eyes and ears!!! Progressing through your video...I feel like I am weaved into a good Maeve Binchey book. I'm off to get a pencil now ❤
Lovely sketches, really enjoyed seeing them with all the stories! Your style has a touch of comic likeness…reminds me of the old Beano comics, but I mean that as a compliment, I really like it! And the teacup sketches were so good too. Looking forward to the next video ☺️
Thank you! I loved the Beano as a child, but Tintin was my guru, with Asterix a close second. Nowadays I love and revere the work of Sempé, but you’re right on the nose with the reference to comic artists…those early influences made a lasting impression on me 😁
A fantastic tour de force. I love your sketches.
Thanks so much Douglas, greatly appreciated 🥰
Thank you for sharing 😊

What kind of pen and ink do you use?
