  • This video is based on a recent request from a subscriber to highlight some of the differences between wood and MDF/HDF cabinets. Aside from the obvious cost difference of the two products, there are some differences in their inherent characteristics as well. We will highlight some of these differences and then focus on some of the basic features in cabinet construction to be familiar with when you go to shop for cabinets. Some of these features include things like standard vs full overlay doors and drawers, drawer glides, cushion close, as well as different joinery methods for the drawers, doors, and overall boxes.
    As I mention in the video, there are a multitude of things we could focus on with cabinets so this video is designed as a jumping off point to give you some of the things to look for in cabinets functions and features.
    Intro: 0:00 - 1:45
    Wood vs MDF/HDF and Paint vs Stain vs Thermofoil: 1:46 - 6:37
    Cabinetry Construction Options with Examples: 6:38 - 10:20
    Custom Cabinetry Example - 10:20 - 12:44

I need to replace my kitchen cabinets, and don't have room or time to make my own. Do you know how hard it is finding a quality cabinet in Cherry that is as good as what I could make? Very! There are some decent RTA all Ply cabinets out there, none in Cherry though.

    This was fantastic! Information I've seen on literally no other video, and I've watched hundreds. I'd love to see information about the "boxes" for the cabinets. My designer and the cabinet builder are giving me what seems like conflicting information, and I'm totally confused. I guess some of them have some kind of "border" (I'm sure that's not the right word) and some don't. It's something about the amount of accessible room inside the cabinet; I just don't get what they're talking about. Anyway, THANK YOU for the excellent video!

      Hi !! Thanks for your reply ...... could u do a video on what type sinks are best and if we were to choose stainless steel then how to choose the right stainless steel sink that doesn’t scratch or make a loud sound. Are ceramic sinks more prone to staining or cracking ? How about gold sinks ... will they fade ?
      Also if u could do a video on sink taps and the pull out water sprayer? Are they any good ? Are these newer all in one heating sink taps that give u filtered water aswel as boiling water .... are they any good ?
      Also another video on kitchen islands ... what type edging should it be if we chose quarts tops , and if I wanted to fit 8 ppl on there ... what’s the best way , how much distance there should be between the island and main kitchen worktops , the height , the overhang length? Sooo many questions ... sorry

    • @RemodelWithRobert
      @RemodelWithRobert  3 года назад +4

      I think in a higher humidity environment, you may want to have a de-humidifier in addition to making sure there is proper air flow throughout. With all cabinetry there are still going to be recommendations for the humidity range and if you are somewhere like Florida, the natural humidity level is almost certainly above what is recommended. Great question to ask your supplier for those specific concerns.

  • @lostinmyspace4910
    @lostinmyspace4910 Год назад

    One point about solid painted cabinets that was made; If you go with painted cabinets verses a wood grain look with knots, and grain, and a wood stain to showcase natural wood, your painted cabinets will prbably have the joints open up due to mositure variations in your home, winter moisture/ summer humidity mositure will make the cabinets swell up and expand thus showing the raw wood inbetween. Some drawers are made p of 5 pieces, so all those joints have the possibility of opning up. I always liked stain cabinets better than painted wood anyway.

    • @RemodelWithRobert
      @RemodelWithRobert  Год назад

      Great point. It is most visible on white cabinets too, the current most popular paint choice.

    • @lostinmyspace4910
      @lostinmyspace4910 Год назад

      @@RemodelWithRobert I don't know how the marketing experts ever got white wood to be so accepted in the industry. Certainly, we recognize that there are cheaper wood types you can utilize to make cabinets, and the price point is less espensive. It doesn't matter because paint over wood covers any type of wood that cannot be identified, mostly by the grain pattern. That's a shame because the beauty of wood is in the natural grain, knots, stryations, etc that come alive with a stain that truly enhances the wood like a beautiful piece of furniture. How did everybody switch or change their mind? Marketing? Is it that everybody wants their kitchen choices to be marketable so when they sell the home, it's got all the best accceptable, and most popular choices in cabinetry, and other wood trim? That's a shame. I don't ever make choices for the next homeowner. This is my house. It's like a beautiful woman who dresses in a wool dress from her shoes up past her neck.Oh man, does that sound sexist, but beauty should be adorned. I love my honey colored oak cabinets. For one thing, I know it's oak, and not painted pine, at best. But there's also mahogany and cherry...oh the beautiful wood types there are what people should respect, and keep the white paint for your Chevy Impala.

    Another feature that is available is framed or frameless cabinets which makes a big difference in accessibility. Frameless has no lip at the entrance to the cabinet. I’m leaning towards getting those because I never liked trying to clean out all the little corners in there and it makes it easier to get things in and out.

    One of my pet peeves are drawers that are left partially open because they tend to leave enough opening to allow dripping liquid into the contents. Is there a drawer design that automatically fully closes when it's not fully extended?

    • @DrWarBear
      @DrWarBear Год назад

      You probably want a soft close drawer. I don’t think there’s anything on the market that auto closes a door (otherwise it’ll be pulling on you every time you go to open it and get stuff out), but with those soft close mechanisms, as long as you get it close enough the drawer will always close fully. So no more 80 or 90% closed drawers.
      I’ve got them on my dresser, they make a huge difference

    Lowe’s has an installer I can use or I can hire my own. How and when do I ask my contractor to be involved with the design process and how can he quote the job if he’s not part of the purchase process? Our friends bought their cabinets from some dealer and had Olly install them. The said Olly made lots of suggestions and said how he’d have done things a little different if was purchasing. They wish they’d brought Olly into the process earlier.

    • @RemodelWithRobert
      @RemodelWithRobert  3 года назад +2

      Generally going through Lowes you will not get access to the installer during the design process, and it is not typical for the installer to be part of that process but the goal is to work through a company that has a good streamlined channel from the designer to the installer so that they are all on the same page in terms of how it can best be done.

    • @RemodelWithRobert
      @RemodelWithRobert  3 года назад +2

      Lot of considerations. When you remove the thermofoil there will be an HDF or MDf core that if in good enough condition could potentially be very lightly sanded, primed, and then painted. Definitely a lot of work if the cabinets are in good enough condition for it to even be possible. Without looking at the condition of yours specifically, hard to say if it is truly worth pursuing or not.

    You are intelligent. Lovely to find you. Is plywood a veneer type of wood? Wood is wood. Yes. Are MDF and HDF one and the same?

    • @RemodelWithRobert
      @RemodelWithRobert  3 года назад +4

      plywood is the construction option for the boxes and is made of layered sheets of wood instead of the MDF or HDF. MDF vs HDF is just a medium density or high density fiber. They are the same idea but the final density between the two is where the main difference lies.

    What about frameless vs framed? Which is better?

    • @RemodelWithRobert
      @RemodelWithRobert  3 года назад +4

      In my opinion, frameless cabinets are preferable for the cleaner look they provide, as well as the additional space gained from not having the separate face frame piece protruding into the box space.

    Can you do a video on pvc cabinets?

      I will have to do some research on my end first as I don't have a lot of experience with PVC cabinets and want to make sure I am always speaking with accuracy in my videos! Thank you for the suggestion and I will definitely see what I can make down the road.

    My contractor is also really pushing MDF cabinets. Does anybody know why a contractor would do this? I was told that the finish on the MDF cabinets and the MDF itself would hold up better against dents, scratches, etc. I’d appreciate any input I can get on this topic.

    • @rosanap.7680
      @rosanap.7680 Год назад +1

      @@Nellopi22 I didn’t. I ended up going with a different contractor who will not install MDF cabinets. He said he didn’t know why the others were recommending MDF, but that he personally prefers solid wood. My guess is there’s a higher profit margin with MDF. An unrelated cabinet maker told me that the cabinets are easier to construct because MDF is super straight, with no warping whatsoever. A cabinet installer told me that when they screw/attach MDF cabinets to the wall, the MDF shreds and splinters. He told me to go for the solid wood/plywood instead. So, I went with solid wood.

    Thermofoil cabinets, if any moisture sits on them for an extended amount of time, like the edge, they bubble and chip. They don't clean as easily as one might think, I have white cabinets that have yellowed over the years. This is what the previous owners had installed, I'd never go with thermofoil. I'd prefer either natural stained wood or a painted wood.

    Is Duraform the same as Thermofoil?

    • @RemodelWithRobert
      @RemodelWithRobert  3 года назад +4

      I would place Duraform in the thermofoil family and say that it is an evolved form of thermofoil cabinetry so yes, it is still thermofoil but should be a better performing version of that technology.

    Thank you very informative. I just got a bid from a cabinet maker. A 18 x 14 size kitchen with cabinets down either side, 2 bathroom vanities. Price (drum roll) $73,000. 😳 I asked for a simple painted cabinets. Even my remodel contractor thought that was crazy! Triple what I expected.

    I really don't understand why anyone would pay for custom cabinets then have them sand all the corners off. This doesn't make them look worn or used, it just makes them look like trash. Real wear on furniture and cabinets doesn't anything like what this stuff does.

    You can buy a pre-fabricated kitchen and install it yourself for 1/5 of the price. I had several contractors that tried to charge me 10000 for a kitchen I laughed in their face and did the job myself. All you need is about 500 dollars in tools and 2-3 thousand in materials.
