When you're just coming in after light speed and then zoom into the cockpit automatically at the start of the stage, it synchs with the music. That's the most memorable thing about this game.
i think it also syncs well when you unzoom while approaching the first battleship. but what i remember most is being FORCED to turn SIDEWAYS to squeeze through the ship! the first game i ever played where it's POSSIBLE to tilt that way, and you NEED to do it!
This is something that's lost on people playing via emulation. The timing of this set piece relies on the clock speed of the SNES being predictable, so musical bits like this end up being off.
There's absolutely no doubt that the SNES's sound is way better than the Sega Genesis. The Sega Genesis is not a bad console, but there are just many things that make it significantly inferior to the SNES.
This right here is incredible. How did they manage to make a 32 second song on a 16 bit console have so much power and energy behind it? The game's score stands out on its own, but man... Space Armada is truly special.
> How did they manage to make a 32 second song on a 16 bit console... That's pretty generous. If the composer was Tim Follin, the song would have been 4 minutes.
It's amazing the amount of sound fidelity they could get out of the system at the time to make something that still sounds epic in almost 2015. Over 20 years later.
Absolutely my favorite level in the game. Flying through space, seeing armada fleets all around, never an empty level. Going in those space ships, dodging those horrific defenses and blowing them up, and later seeing that gigantic ship coming straight towards you and the music switches to suspense, revealing to be the boss. Star Fox, I love you.
I imagine those are fighter-carrier ships or assault-landing carriers; the doors are open because they're in the process of launching against you, and have underestimated the player's speed.
When I beat this level's boss and destroyed the Armada's massive flagship, I felt like I struck a crippling blow to Andross's forces and plans to conquer the Lylat System. I also felt some sadness that such a large and magnificent warship had to be destroyed to foil Andross's plans.
If I had done that, I'd probably have had that one friend who only recognized it cause they heard it in Super Smash Bros Brawl and no one else would have recognized it at all.
This stage was so cool--like this was more than just showing off the Super FX chip. As much as I liked Star Fox 64, I wish it and later games (including Zero) had kept the orchestral / John Williams / Holst sound.
I feel ya. Concerning its latest outing, I think the composers tried, but they ultimately seemed like they had no idea what they wanted out of the soundtrack.
