  • This video explores a couple potential fixes for the mysterious "Brake EBD, ABS, and ESC Inoperative" error message. This occurred on my 2011 GLK 350 just over a year ago, and disappeared before the brake switch I ordered came in.
When it popped up again, I did another round of diagnosis, including replacing the brake switch, and cleaning / checking the wheel speed sensors.
It's kind of a long story - watch the video! ;-)

Strangely enough, the problem this time persisted for weeks, but then - as before, a year ago - just stopped happening again (for rhe last 1,000 or so miles). The one thing I would add is that I checked the wheel speed sensors on my "project GLK", and they didn't show the odd behavior of going to -600kph. I'm thinking that the problem is likely in the ABS / ESP module (which is bolted to the ABS pump / distribution block). If the failure comes back, I may try swapping that out, and bought the bi-directional scanner to code a used module if I do.

I had a similar problem occur with a Honda Ridgeline (2010). After much cussing and sleuthing it turned out to be the seal in a wheel bearing which also contains the magnets that run past the wheel speed sensor to give the car the information about how fast each wheel is turning. When the signal is missing all driver assist functions ceased, ABS, traction control, AWD etc. Cure was to replace wheel bearing, the actual wheel speed sensors were fine. Don't know what caused the bearing seal to give up the ghost. Also don't know if Mercedes uses a similar system.

Just checked online some Mercedes and others perhaps Volvo use a magnetic reluctor in the wheel bearing seal to give the sensor a tiny voltage that is interpreted as wheel speed. If the bearing fails, or is lailing this may cause the symtoms I mentioned.

@@richardcalon3724 There are a lot of similarities between Honda and MB. There is a toothed ring on the axle that is "read" by the wheel speed sensor, which reports the wheel speed to those other systems. The distance from the toothed ring to the wheel speed sensor is tiny, so a bad wheel bearing can increase the distance enough that the sensor no longer works correctly. I'm pretty much sure that the problem with my car is not related to the wheel speed sensor(s) though (wish it was). ;-)

Yes, I did reply to it (the reply was in the comments on the video associated with that issue). See my two replies in the comment section here: ruclips.net/video/ZTxNvOcca4c/видео.html
