- Van Build Ep. 27: How to build the perfect rotating camper van table. Build your own Lagun table leg and swivel mounting plate for your van, camper, or RV and save money!
Wondering how to make your own cheaper Lagun table leg system alternative for your RV, van, or camper? Today we're installing a swivel table in our Ford Transit high roof camper van, attaching the Lagun style table mount at the front of our van using the factory holes in the column of the van directly behind the passenger seat so we'll be able to use it when we sit in our swivel seat or multipurpose desk/toilet chair!
We also made our own tabletop for the swivel table using salvaged wood and a creative paint stain wash finishing technique and water-based polyurethane. The swiveling table is multipurpose and can function as a computer desk, kitchen counter, dining table, and game table!
The whole project cost for table mount, table leg, and tabletop was $61.58. The standard Lagun table system (not including a tabletop) is currently $199. That means we save well over $100! Other channels have spent less on parts, but we think that was before materials costs skyrocketed to crazy stupid level! We're all about keeping costs down. Let us know if you have any ideas for doing it better or cheaper!
MATERIALS USED:
- M6-1.0 x 40mm cap screws
- 2' long 1-1/4" PVC pipe
- 1-1/4" one hole strap
- 6" long 1" threaded galvanized pipe
- 18" long 1" threaded galvanized pipe
- galvanized 90 degree elbow
- galvanized 90 degree street elbow
- 1" galvanized floor flange

Awesome job. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Always nice to save some money and our friends with Lagun tables say ours seems more sturdy.
I knew that's how you washed your dishes!! Very clever Stever!!
It definitely cuts down on our water consumption! 😆
Loved the design! It's so nice that when the chair is moved back, and the table put away, you have a really nice open space at the door. Very well thought out design. Smart to take 2 years to get it exactly how you need it!!
Thank you! ❤ We really like how the table turned out. We also like that the space there is so open even though that means less storage. We were going to put a cabinet there that would overlap the slider opening like so many people do but we often remark about how crowded we would feel. We'd have to shimmy past each other every time we needed to get around!
I just belly laughed in the garage at 430am drinking coffee, watching Steve lick that plate 😁 what a fantastic addition to the van!! The little things that make life better 💓 love the way the color came out Audra! I had to come look for this vid?? Idk why I missed you..these algorithms maybe..safe travels and really loved this summer trip. Beautiful beaches & amazing wildlife! Till next time!! 🚐💙🐾
We are so glad that we can provide a belly laugh! And it's great to hear from you here! We're excited about this upgrade and a few other things we've been working on. We're glad you enjoyed the Gulf Coast series! We loved finding beautiful places and wildlife. Florida has so much to explore! 💓💓
This is exactly what I need for my Ford Econoline. Thank you for sharing your design.😊
We're glad you find it helpful! We recently had friends with a Lagun table tell us ours is much more stable and they have had nothing but trouble with theirs.
@@SteveAudra I probably would have gone with a Lagun table but after seeing yours I will have my husband build it. I did see many videos of different placements but I like where you placed yours as I have the passenger seat that swivels too. I think I will modify your design a little bit so I can swing the table outside for cooking outdoors. I can see that it will be very functional. New subscriber from Vegas.
@@cocacolafiesta Awesome, thanks! And our video we're posting today is of our time in Vegas! 🙂
Pretty clever!! I love it. Had a joke written about the Street Elbow having a Female end and a Male end. But then I deleted it. It had to do with a Wheaties star.
Thanks, Frank! 🙂 It will be so nice to have this table to use now! Behave, this is a PG channel!
Great table guys!
Funny, about a month we went to home depot with the same idea. We bought the pvc pipe, galvanized pipe and the base for the table. But we couldn't figure out where to mount it. Now we do!
Thank you for enlightening us.
Great job!
Lanny and Roxanne AdVANtures
Too funny! We really like it where it is. We may also add another mount at the back of the slider in the future. We'll see. Thanks, as always!!!
Your videos are so cute, looks like you're really having fun together! Haapy travels.
Thanks! 😊 And we are. 98.5% of the time! Lol!
Awesome idea , love it ! You guys are awesome! Thankyou for sharing 😊
Thank you so much! We really appreciate that! 🙂
@@SteveAudra you're very very welcome, we appreciate u guys sharing your great ideas and awesome videos 🙂
This is awesome. So much less $$ than buying one. You two do great work. I keep looking to buy things like this for my van and think the prices are outrageous, so I make or modify something myself.
Thanks so much! We love saving money and we're with you that if we can make or modify something ourselves, we sure will!
Functional and looks great! Perfect combination. Nicely done you two. When we make a table (someday I hope since we picked up a Lagun mount over a year ago on Offer up) I'd like to incorporate a built in cribbage board since we play a lot when we camp. Not sure how to keep food and debris out of the holes yet 🤔. I like the size of your table. Large enough for your needs, but not too big to store away in transit. Of course the pantomime eating was my favorite part. Love your sense of humor.
Thanks again! Hmmmm.... Could you make a table that could be flipped? Cribbage board on one side and regular table on the other side? Or maybe a smaller game board that could slide over the main tabletop? Leave it to Steve to come up with the funny! He started at the eating pantomime, so I just followed along! 😆
Nice table! Love it. Has given me some ideas. I actually found a knock off fixture and didn't know how to install it and now I have a few great ideas for the table part too!
I give it 🚐🚐🚐🚐🚐
Thanks, Deb! We appreciate the 5 van rating!!!! 🙂 We're also glad it gave you some ideas!!! We really like having the table in that spot. We also might put a mount at the back of the slider so we can work back there too.
@@SteveAudra that's also a great idea!
Nice job with the table. I think the color turned out great. Have you guys seen the structural pipe and fittings. I know they can be found at Lowe's. I used that material to build a rack for my pickup. Looking forward to seeing the table in use in future videos.
Thanks, Jeff! Is the structural type stronger? We had to look it up to see what you meant. We anticipate that we are really going to like having the table!
@@SteveAudra I don't think it is stronger than the pipe you used. It is just another alternative and pretty versatile with all the different kinds of connections.
@@jshenderson Gotcha! Thanks for letting us know! We'll keep that in mind since we are considering adding another mount in the future.
Hi Steve and Audra. I think this is what I will build for my truck camper, actually a Harker EDC that I have added cabinets, etc. I wonder why you went with 1" pipe? Do you think 3/4" or even 1/2" would work. Of course the PVC would also be smaller for a tight fit. What do you think?
That's cool to hear about your project! We've seen other people use thinner pipe than we used but when Steve went to Home Depot to look at options, the smaller sized pipes didn't seem to fit any of the PVC pipe options well. The other consideration would be the size and weight of your table. A thinner pipe might not be sufficient unless you plan to do a smaller table.
Ok so I built almost the exact Table in my van. 1" galvanized, pvc, ... exact. Except my vertical galvanized pipe goes all the way to the floor inside my pvc tube (not just a few inches like yours). I have a problem in that my table doesn't want to sit level. I think know now it may be because the vertical pipe is too heavy for the unit or something like that. I''ve been searching for a way to rework the table because I really like it- slant and all. Thanks for this I'll let you know if your design works for me.
Hey Michele, thanks for the note. So far so good with our design. We made a slight modification to our table set up since this video. Everything remains the same except that we cut the length of the PVC pipe almost in half (the slider door bumper was hitting the PVC pipe ever so slightly and messing up the paint). We installed a wood support piece under the PVC pipe to insure that it stays in place. Hopefully we'll show this in greater detail in a upcoming van tour video.
Great video! Have you figured out a way to lock the table in place so it doesn’t spin? Thanks
Thanks so much! Spinning really isn't an issue. If we're both working at it with our computers, it wobbles up and down a bit. We've been content just to support it with our knees if we need to and have thought if it was annoying enough, we could just cut a piece to prop under for additional stability. Steve thinks it's really not an issue. I notice it a bit. It's worked pretty well for us though, and when we tested out a Lagun table, it seemed there was some wiggle or play with that as well.
@@SteveAudra I was thinking a small hole and ring pin or lynch pin. Easily used when needed and removed when not needed. Thanks for the response.
This looks really good! Would you mind telling me the dimensions of the table top? We're planning to do a similar build and I'm not sure how big the table should be.
Thanks so much and sorry for the delayed response. We had to get the table out and measure it! The table is 21.5" x 30.5".
Awesome idea. Does the PVC pipe need to be that long? Would it not work as well if the PVC was the same length as the pipe? Keennto hear your thoughts.
Hello! We made the PVC pipe that long because of the location of the existing holes in that part of the van. We secured the pipe at the top and bottom using bolts that fit those existing threaded holes because we try to avoid creating new holes. You could probably do a shorter pipe if you wanted to drill new holes.
OK, I'm going to try this. How large did you make the table top? Is it still working well for you? Thanks.
Hi Heather! 😊 The table is 21.5"x30.5". Because of how we travel we don't use the table too often but it works pretty well. I think I'd recommend making it a little smaller.
How much weight can this setup take? 1x16x36 board for food prep and or run a standard 2 burner gas camping stove.
We would not try cooking on the table, but it should be fine for food prep. We think it's important to be mindful about the amount of weight you put on it. If we both work on ours with our laptops at the same time, we might even use some sort of extra support such as something propped up under it.
Great ideas, looking to do the same thing. How do you store it when driving? Do you leave it in like that? I am assuming you have to screw it and unscrew it every time you want to use it…?
Thanks so much! We store the tabletop under our mattress and the pipe base under the passenger seat. Yes, we screw it on each time. Overall, it's works pretty well!
I lick my plate too!
LOL! Cuts down on water usage too! 😜
@@SteveAudra either that or get a dog.
@@Kayte... 😂
Going to copy cat you
Awesome! We'd love to hear how it goes and if you do anything different at all!
How did you not cut the cord when you started the jigsaw before it was in position…. You pretty much pulled the trigger when you picked it up! Don’t think you should be “showing” people how to do things…. 😂😂
No cords were harmed in the making of this video.
As someone who has used both Lagun and EZ-Reach tables I have serious doubts about the durability of the PVC leg. How has it held up? How do you lock it down when traveling? Overtime has your swingarm started to sag? I'm here because both Lagun and EZ-Reach have issues with long term use for a computer workarea, looking for other options.
The PVC leg is secured to a piece of wood. We've had no problem with the setup and our friends who have Lagun tables say they like ours better. We don't lock it down when traveling. We put the table top and pipe (swing arm) attachment away. There's a little give in the table when we're working but it doesn't bother us. It's been like that since the start, but we also have a pretty large table top.
