Can an ‘affordable’ 1970s MARSHALL come close to the 1960s HOLY GRAIL ‘Hendrix’ PLEXI?

  • In this video I compare a 1967 Marshall Super Bass to a 1971 Marshall Super. So, model no. 1992 Vs 1959, Pinstripe vs Basketweave grill cloth and G12H25 vs G12H30. Both cabs are Marshall model 1982A 4x12. I'm playing a 1973 Fender Stratocaster with 1976 Pickups.

    Both great amps obviously, the 67 sounds better with single coils but I think the 71 would sound better with a humbucker because it is brighter. I am partial because I like bright and I also prefer humbuckers. Even though Hendrix tone is fantastic, there is nothing quite like a Les Paul with a cranked superlead as you already know very very well haha! With a few minor component tweaks i think they would both be pretty close but then again no two Marshalls sound alike, I've played great ones and downright horrible ones depending on the Transformers and factoring in component drift.

    I own both the 67 Super Bass and a 72 Super Lead. Cutting the bright cap on the 72 has made them much more similar sounding. Much more usable too. They are both great amps but the 71 here sounds a lot better when it’s cranked up, after the point where the bright cap doesn’t have an impact anymore.

    67 all day, 67 all night long. There silly money now. Guy owned a used guitar amp shop in the Uk for many years, in my home town. He had been buying and selling amps, cabs for many many years. He had the 1967 head, twin stack. It also had JHE sprayed on the gear in white! It was the real deal. Where Hendrix used is anyone's guess. He informed me that he would never sell. :-)

    I think young people (like me) learn a lot about vintage tone, amps and guitars from you.
    Your pre law suit Ibanez guitar videos inspired me to buy a affordable 70s (greco factory) Arbiter SG Custom and it sounds surprisingly good !
    Now I am checking out some affordable cool amps from your videos.
    Hope you can do more stuff like this :)
    Cheers!

    Obviously the amp itself is a large consideration here given the differences in the circuitry, but another considerable factor of the tone of those old pre-'68 stacks is the pinstripe grill cloth on the cabs. It has thin gray rubber strips closely woven into black fabric, which filters out tons of lows and highs and leaves you with a very vocal and smooth midrange. I installed the EC Collins Bluesbreaker-Pinstripe cloth (the only EXACT reproduction of original pinstripe available today) on my 1960TV cab and the tone was totally transformed. Even though I have the stock modern 25w greenbacks in there most of the harsh highs that the Chinese Celestions are typically known for when compared to vintage speakers have been almost completely tamed and smoothed out thanks to the change of the cloth. Very different tonal response to the stuff Marshall is installing on their cabs today and calling it "pinstripe", even though it's _nothing_ like true pinstripe, and also very different from basketweave.

      He used Super Lead a lot in 69-70 tours. It's not about the amp at all. I was shocked when I discovered that he used SoundCity amps on Axis album and lots of VOX AC30s and Fender amps on Electric Ladyland. It's more than just an amp.. His recordings and Live shows are two completely different worlds..

    Both sound great. Listening through headphones, they´re not terribly difficult to differentiate between, but in the grand scheme of things, they sound pretty similar. The major difference (to my ears) is that the Super Bass is slightly darker, which tends to work nicely with a single-coil equipped strat, just to take off a tiny bit of that sharp, jangly top end. Both sound fantastic and I´m looking forward to hear a Les Paul cranked through that Super Bass indeed!

      @@JohanSegeborn Very understandable! You are the one Marshall should have contacted for sure to make some demos.

    Ah, they both sound sweet, but actually more different than I imagined. Could you do a similar A/B with swapped cabs? That’d be really interesting.

    Great sound either one! Good demo.

      Thanks, it’s basically all knobs on 5, whith less treble and Prescence on the 71

    '67 compresses a bit more, '71 sounds a bit more scooped, which brings out the bass and treble more. Best would be to combine them. :P

    What's the stack height of the PT btw? Great '67 tone, running EL34's?

    Hi Johan, Do you know if the Super Bass chassis is aluminum or steel? (can check with a magnet.) I'm wondering if that's part of the difference, they switched to steel sometime in '67-'68. That chimey "new string" tone is often a trait of aluminum chassis in my experience, but I could be wrong.

    When comparing I wondered with an eq pedal, boosting the very lowest eq band would bring some-what closer to that deep tone of the '67 amp.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  5 лет назад

      No I actually tried to add more bass even on the internal EQ on the Super Lead but it led to a more flubby sound

      @@JohanSegeborn I had something like 30-40hz narrow band in mind, in an older mxr eq pedal for example. but of-course it would never be the same :)

    I have a question Johan. I see you just about always use an attenuator when you play. So are you turned up pretty high on the head controls for the power section, and use the attenuator to keep the level lower so your not splitting your skull? Or is there another reason. Just wondering, because these days, I too ALWAYS play through my Reload, to do exactly what I suggested. I think my heads just dont sound their best unless I have the power section pushing around 80%, maybe slightly higher on my Marshalls and Hiwatts, but un-attenuated, it just doesnt sound very good, mostly because my ears just dont like head splitting volume in a 14'x14' room....

      @JohanSegeborn  5 лет назад

      Hi, I only use the attenuator (-4 to -8 dB) when I play a 100 Watter through a single cab to avoid blowing speakers or when when I play in the apartment. Cheers

    Just go with a split cathode in either amp; .68uf/2.7k lead channel, 250uf/820hm normal channel. Fender and Marshall values but with those heroic and detailed British EL34 power tubes

    Can you tell us all the models and years that are plexis, and do any plexis have a master volume at all? These Hendrix sounding amps are my favorite, I just have to have a master volume, so I can actually play it, and not go deaf or something terrible, like that. I really want to get one something like this, I just need to know which would be the most affordable one with a master volume.
