Mark Dinning was my neighbor back in 1986. I once interviewed him as a student at the University of Missouri. Mark was very nice and was a great neighbor. A few years after my interview, Mark, aged 52, died from a heart attack after a performance he was coming home from. He and his wife, Polly Sue have since passed on. I will miss them both.
According to one website the song is based on 'real' events. Loved it since I knew it existed. I love all kinds of music and do wop is fantastic but... this song is perfect. Always gets your attention. Always haunting.
I am 72 years old and haven't heard this song in decades, but when I found it on you tube and played it, I STILL remembered all the words. "Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end", but they did and I'm thankful to be able to bring the music back from my growing up years and just let me wallow in the memories.
This song brings back memories of my first boyfriend who, along with a brother and sister, were killed in a car train accident. The song came out right after their accident. Still brings tears to my eyes.
@Derrick Bridges Wish you the blessing of seeing her again one day. Have you heard Kitty Wells' "How Far Is Heaven?" It's another one of those songs that your heart can really feel.
That's not true. There's a total sub-culture out there for rockabilly and now you have psychobilly too. Just because good music isn't played on the radio doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
my grandma also showed this song to me. when i was realll little she’d sing this song to me before bed. she’s still alive but i miss seeing her as often as i used to
Thank you for posting this wonderful song. This reminds me my daughter who died last Nov. She died due to brain tumor, not by the accident though. When I watch this clip, I can’t stop crying, crying, crying... The verse “ Teen angel can you hear me?” echoes in my heart. Thanks.
I think i'm the only 12 year old out there that actually enjoys this song... it's very beautiful, I cried the first time I heard it when I was 9. I came back to the video because it's an amazing song!
From the very First time I heard this years ago through to today this song makes me cry. You can hear the pain in his voice and you can completely relate this song to losing any loved one, especially those that are taken far too young. God bless.
This is dedicated to my Cousin Tyler who was killed in a Four Seater Airplane Crash in 2011, he wasn't sixteen, but twenty-three, and had the singing voice of an Angel. Love you, Tyler. Rest in Peace, Singing With God's Angels.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, November 15, 1959, Herbert Clutter, his wife Bonnie and two of their children, Nancy aged 16 and Kenyon aged 15, were murdered at their farm in Holcomb, Kansas. These crimes were immortalized by Truman Capote in his novel "In Cold Blood". At the time of her death, Nancy Clutter was the girlfriend of Robert "Bobby" Rupp, who, a year after the tragedy that marked his life, was interviewed by journalist Andy Waldrop. In this report, Bobby confessed that in the year after Nancy's death, when he was in deep sadness, a song came out that touched him deeply, it was called "Teen Angel". The lyrics speak of a young man afflicted by the loss of his love of 16 years. As it happened to him. This is the song.
Such wonderful music. I was born in 89 and absolutely love this type of music. I've been listening to it ever since I was little with my Grandmother. It's so powerful and passionate. It has real meaning to it unlike the music that it produced today, such a shame that this music has faded away.
I was played this song, since I can remember (which is when I was aged 3), which would be between 1988-1989! And I still cry 😭 every time I listen to it, as my mum tried to explain about the meaning of this song when I was a bit more older! I was 35 last month, & this song still makes me cry, as I can understand & appreciate the song.
If i had to pick ONLY ONE song that describes the last 50s to mid 60s, it would be this song. What a tribute to the music of the times. Don't think my memories would be nearly so vivid without it. All of us experienced the loss of a loved one in a car accident, during these times.
Such a wonderful song i remember hearing it when i was a kid im almost 44 now my late mother 🙏🏽 who was born in 1947 had a record collection out of this world she would play her records alot and she opened my ears to all types o of music she listened to everything from ccr to otis redding to Johnny horton so i love listening to these old songs it reminds me of the time i had with my mother 🥰🥰
Im 16 and I love this song. I used to listen to it with my Grandfather before he passes away last week. He had a recording of it from when it came out on vinyl. Its the last thing I have from him. Everytime I hear this song, I start to cry now
Hello. I'm 15, and my grandpa passed away about a few months ago and he left me a list of songs, this being the first. I know you'll likely never see this, but I want you to know that I know he misses you.
stephen culley I'm with you buddy. I never dreamed I would live this long. I am not sure it is a great blessing to live a long life because nearly all my peers are dead. I am so lonely and I miss them so very much.
Never say your to old to old for what, To old to love ,To old to fight , To old to cry To old to laugh , To old to live and not old enough to die , God bless you .
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From a 73yo Aussie fan. Reminds me of the old times in Australia on the pop charts. Incredible music then.
All my teenage memories in the country life of my time came up when I heard this song again. I added this song to my classic music list. Please keep listening.
Thanks for posting this! Mark stopped by my little music shop in Jefferson City a number of times and sang and played guitar right up until his sudden death. He was in terrible health yet still sounded just like his records. The man would sing his heart out for 2 admiring fans, just out of kindness. He was a warm and cheerful person.
1960.....Teen Angel.. Teen Angel.. Teen Angel.. Woo woo [Verse:] That fateful night, The car was stalled Upon the railroad tracks. I pulled you out And we were safe, But you went running back. [Chorus:] Teen Angel, can you hear me? Teen Angel, can you see me? Are you somewhere up above, And am I still your own true love? [Verse 2:] What was it you were looking for, That took your life that night? They said they found my high school ring Clutched in your fingers tight... [Chorus:] [Verse 3:] Just sweet sixteen, And now you're gone. They've taken you away I'll never kiss your lips again They buried you today... (chorus)(2x) Teen Angel... Answer me... Please...1960
My dad used to sing this song to my brother and I when we were little. I don’t know why, it’s sort of a morbid song to sing to your kids as you put them to bed, but it’s always stuck with me. I’m 32 now and still know the lyrics by heart.
Brings back great memories. This song was written by Mark's sister Jean and Jean's husband Red Surrey. Sadly Mark became an alcoholic and died young with a heart attack at 52 years. He had a great voice and was, I think under-appreciated. I remember in 1960 when this song made number 1 on the Billboard. Jean passed away at 86 years of age in 2011.
I love this song, my Daddy used to sing this to my brother and I. When we would take family vacations we would a harmonize to this one and alot more. OOOHH!!!!! the memories
I think I've fallen in love with this song! I love being 15 and browsing through my father's old records! My mum wasn't even born when this premiered :) At least 5 years 'till her birth
This song brings comfort. My little brothers best friend who was like a second little brother to me and his girlfriend died by crashing into a body of water. My little brother still talks to his best friend in the shower as if he can hear him. This is true anguish. They were seventeen.
Im 41 years old , my mother passed away last year at 82 :( she use to sing this to me when i was just a kid , man i miss her so much!!! Because of her i write story form songs ! Thanks mamma!!!!! See you later:)
Favorite memories seen to be everlasting. It seems like yesterday, I just started high school at Sunset, Dallas, TX (Class of '60-'62) when this iconic tune was first released. It was one of our favorites, along with "Tell Laura I Love Her, " Earth Angel", and others. When these tunes were played at our school sock hops, my date always wanted to be held tight, and even wanted a kiss - even though it was against the "rules" and we risked being asked to leave. I was always willing to comply. This was a time of innocence and simplicity which may never be repeated. Thanks.
my 6th grade teacher used to play us old twilight zone episodes and old songs. i fell in love with this song and always asked him to play it. 6 years later it is still one of my favorites. im pretty sure it will remain one untill i die.
I was 11, and surely cried over this song. To me, the 50's ended with the entrance of the Beatles appeared in 64, so this is a 50's song. And I was a sucker for them. Elvis' 'old Shep' in 56, Patches, Tell Laura I love her... surely there were others.
i was crazy about the shangri-la's. pretty mary weiss and that terrible bubble top over her long brown hair. the kind of chick a fifteen year old boy dreamed of. the other girls in the group looked like student library assistants.
The amazing part of this, aside from his talent to invoke a strong emotional response, is that his stage voice and record sound were near identical. Nowadays, with auto-tuning, remixes, and digital mastery, what you hear on a cd is often not what you hear live.
My momma use to sing this one especially but all the oldies to myself and my brother and sisters. She has since then passed away in 2015 along with my oldest sister and youngest sister here this past Sunday (March 28th 2021 which us also my mothers birthday). I listen to all of these songs to feel closer to them if that makes sense.
Thank you so much for posting. I used to sit on the floor in my room and listen to this 45 over and over on my hi-fi in 1960 or 61 at around age 6. I never knew what Mark Dinning looked liked and now I do. What a thrill. Never have stopped loving this special song and performance.
I have been looking for this song, on and off since I was around 11 years old, (9 years ago). My mother used to play a cassette with 1950s and 1960s songs including this song, roses are red (my love), earth angel, smoke gets in your eyes and other GREAT songs. Growing up, we would listen to the cassette whenever we were in the car. When my mom sold the car, the cassette was left behind and I had to rely on memory of words or themes to find these songs. This is such a gift for me. THANK YOU!

@Derrick Bridges I cannot believe u said that!! I am taking those two right now n putting in them on my big screen TV.. love it! ❤️
So the only reason he doesn't kiss her is because she's buried? Her being dead wasn't the deal breaker? Lol
@Derrick Bridges you mean the cover by J. Frank Wilson. The original was by Wayne Cochran.

Awesome song still after 53 years. They do not make music like this anymore. the 50's and 60's were the bomb of music for me.
Nowadays music is absolute crap!!
That's not true. There's a total sub-culture out there for rockabilly and now you have psychobilly too. Just because good music isn't played on the radio doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
bullshit
I agree!
I'm 22 but I agree. 50s and 60s are my favorite. Meaningful and wholesome. Letting you see the world in a humble way.

Teen Angel" is a teenage tragedy song written by Jean Dinning and her husband, Red Surrey, and performed by Jean's brother, Mark Dinning,
Thanks for posting this! Mark stopped by my little music shop in Jefferson City a number of times and sang and played guitar right up until his sudden death. 1960.....Teen Angel.. Teen Angel.. Teen Angel..
Woo woo
[Verse:]
That fateful night,
The car was stalled
Upon the railroad tracks.
I pulled you out
And we were safe,
But you went running back.
[Chorus:]
Teen Angel, can you hear me?
Teen Angel, can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above,
And am I still your own true love?
[Verse 2:]
What was it you were looking for,
That took your life that night?
They said they found my high school ring
Clutched in your fingers tight...
[Chorus:]
[Verse 3:]
Just sweet sixteen,
And now you're gone.
They've taken you away
I'll never kiss your lips again
They buried you today...
(chorus)(2x)
Teen Angel... Answer me... Please...1960

She has since then passed away in 2015 along with my oldest sister and youngest sister here this past Sunday (March 28th 2021 which us also my mothers birthday). I listen to all of these songs to feel closer to them if that makes sense.
I loved this song as a kid! Had my own transistor radio in a white leather case with ear plugs.
Hello friend,I hope you're having a great day so far😊😊
THANK YOU!
Songs like a time machine... Just close your eyes and the song will take you back to where you were when you first heard this song!
