Mel Schacher is one of the greatest bassists in rock history. I got to see them live on their "We're An American Band" tour when I was 15 and they were amazing. That album was the beginning of the downward slide for the band for me, but all their albums leading up to that are still in regular rotation for me. One of the great rock & roll trios (until they added keyboardist Craig Frost on the "Phoenix" album, anyway) and always glad to see them pop up in reactions with the younger generation. Glad you liked it Maddy!

Really only Farner was the only one from Flint and he’s from Burton and Brewer is from Swartz Creek a richer suburb. and Schacher is from who really cares and Craig Frost is another member in my book.Farner is the only one still here. Brewer was playing drums for Bob Seger now he called it quits. I’ve been watching them over 50 years.

With respect is it still the band with only the one guy left? I mean if the guy is the engine of the band maybe but to use lynyrd as an example I struggle to see that the later variant is the real band

Grand Funk Railroad is a great American rock band who achieved their peak in popularity during the 1970's. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is one of my favorites. But they had a lot of great hits such as "We're An American Band", "The Loco-Motion", "Walk Like A Man", "Shinin' On", "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "Bad Time" etc.

If you like Bass ad Drums, then check out 'Some Kind of Wonderful" because it is just Bass and Drums, and call and response vocals between Mark Farner (Guitarist) and Don Brewer (Drummer), until they add some organ when they take you to church at the end.

This is actually a great story. Grand Funk Railroad was performing here on a local talk show and they decided to perform this song which was originally done by The Animals and this performance got them signed to a major deal. They weren’t supposed to sing the version with the mention of smoking reefer but they did it anyway. Looks like having guts paid off for them! In 1970 they sold out Shea stadium quicker than The Beatles!! P.S. Maddy is a smoke show!!!!

" ..crunchy toast with melted butter.." - you're the best Maddy!
Mark Farner himself may say that's
a first for compliments - and I believe he'll love it!
As you can tell Maddy, a very energized band with a strong following, gaining their popularity from the mid/late 60s throughout the 70s into the 80s, also adding a keyboardist later on.
"American Band" & "Closer to Home" are 2 of their bigger hits, along with a cataloge of rocking blues, prog, boogie & funk.
    Enjoy!

Grand Funk Railroad debuted in 1969 from Michigan... they were definitely credited as one of those rock bands that embodied the Midwest 'heavy' sound by the likes of The Stooges... MC 5 ... The Amboy Dukes ... etc.
Grand Funk Railroad originally consisted of: Mark Farner (vocals/ guitar), Don Brewer (drums), Mel Schacher (bass)... Craig Frost (keyboards) joined in 1973... The band was well known for their live shows and had hits like - "We're an American band" ... "Rock & roll soul"...
However, the band became disillusioned by 1976 w/ the advent of disco music and split up under internal turmoil... Grand Funk reformed over the years since 1983 but are now strictly a touring legacy band w/ Don Brewer (drums) and Mel Schacher (bass) as original members... Max Carl (vocals & guitar), Tim Cashion (keyboards) and current guitarist Mark Chatfield r in the current touring line-up.

We lived next door to a family of native Americans, just outside of Phoenix when this album came out.. The Father of the family gave me some albums of his tribal music, for mowing their lawn (their mower was down) and mixed in was the GFR red album.. I never heard anything like it before..GFR was my #1 band afterward.. I believe inside looking out was an Animals cover, btw..

Awesome reaction Maddy! Way back in the day our first exposure to GFR was their live album "Grand Funk Live Album" recorded in Jacksonville Florida 1970. We played that record over and over so much we knew every note of every song as the recorded concert played through on the album. It wasn't long before they did a show at The forum and I was there. They were awesome but to our surprise the opening act was a band we hadn't heard of yet. The opening act was Black Sabbath.

Mark Farner, lead singer and guitarist, was badly screwed over by the other two band members. They wrested control of the band and fired Mark years ago. Not only was Marl lead singer and guitarist, but he also wrote most of the songs. They also forbid him from referring to having been a member of Grand Funk when he performed solo. I saw him live about 10 years ago and he still had it. Thanks for this video Maddy. I would like to recommend I'm Your Captain/ Closer to Home as your next G.F. song to react to. It's very different and is my favorite of their songs.

Brewer And Schacher didn't fire Farner. Mark quit the band to go back to his solo career after the 1998 tour. They did however take control of the G.F.R corporation with 2/3 majority vote on legal issues. Now Mark wants back in. Hope it happens.

@@brianmccarthy8595 You are right; they took control of the band, which means he had no power in a group that he had a huge hand in making famous. He had no decision making power over the music that he wrote. They basically "fired" him.

@@davidmyers5916 The 1996-98 tours were very successful for G.F.R. Brewer and Schacher were very optimstic about the future of the band and that's when Farner blindsided them with the news he was quitting when the current tour was over. If Mark did not quit they would not have fired him from the corporation. Don and Mel wanted to keep going and that is when big egos got in the way. So now Mark wants back in but they don't want him. So he kind of screwed over himself. It's sad because G.F.R was such a great band. Farner does have publishing rights to all his songs from 1972 forward and can sing them till his heart is content. I don't know who has publishing rights to the songs he wrote from 1969-71. Possibly the Terry Knight estate? He still sings them live though.

@@brianmccarthy8595 I have heard differently for so many years that it is hard to consider a different scenario. You seem to know a lot about this band. May I ask what your background is? Or are you simply a fan? By the way, my first two albums I purchased were Grand Funk Live The 1910 Fruitgum Co. Is that not the oddest combo?
