First concert I ever went to at 15 years old. Hitchhiked there 30 miles. In February in a snow storm. Got tickets from a scalper. Got a ride home from someone that lived near me. Got grounded for a month. But it was worth it. 65 now.👍😜🤘🎶 But, I blame it on my older brother cuz he got me the live album for Christmas.
On the "foot stomppin music" tour.. they broke arena and stadium attendance records at every single tour date they played. For nearly 20 years their sellout of she's stadium was the largest 1 band crowd in American history. More people showed up than when the Beatles played it.
Great story! ❤️✌️
Ir started out, I walked to school up hill both ways....
❤️✌️😄😄
Sweet!
Mark Farner played bass early on in his career, then lead guitar, he plays drums, harmonica and key boards as well...and all at at a high level. He is the lead vocalist and wrote 90% of the songs for this band. His talent propelled them into the superstardom in rock music for several years. One of the most talented musicians to ever grace a stage
You are only scratching the surface. GFR have so many classic songs it will amaze you.
GFRR is an excellent, excellent band! So many hits. Thanks Kim for the request. T, you are learning more and more about many of our teenage years
The thing about Michigan bands is that we all grew up with great rock and roll, but there was ALWAYS soul music around too. You can really hear that influence come out in these guys as well as Bob Seger.
Love that 'fuzzy' bass. And he was rocking it.
This song was written by Eric Burdon and the Animals. Grand Funk took it and made it their own!
1966 animals: Ref: ruclips.net/video/H8M1MpkozJQ/видео.html
Actually written by someone in prison and musicologist lomax of course discovered and took copyright ( he did that a lot but also brought out songs that have lived forever in pop ) - and just like todays artists Eric burdon added his name to it - todays version of a Katy Perry song with 10 co-writers ;)
I was a little disappointing to hear that at first, but Led Zeppelin did the same thing. But when they make the song their own and much better than that doesn’t really matter
Grand Funk ‘s I Come Tumbling Down off the E Pluribus Funk album the bass sound on that is unbelievably thick but still clear .
My older brother got me into them when I was 9 and he was 16 . Years later in 1984 I was 17 and saw them play a small outdoor
Theater at the University of Hawaii. Standing against stage singing every song . Mark Farner the guitarist and singer pointed at me
At the ending of the concert and said “ Rock on little brother .” Great band great concert .
The band that went toe2toe with LED ZEP and out boogied and souled them..
This is one of my top 5 favorite performances ever. I was SO disappointed that you pretty much ignored the ending.
Yep! Yer yappin' over the ending of the song as though it wasn't pertinent was not cool for us fans... it detracted from this review..but it's your channel, so.....even the NEPALI GIRLS held their tongue...
*Grand Funk Railroad, A 3 piece power band from Detroit, Americas Hardest Hitting Funk Rock Band Ever! ,,,, Im very proud to have worked for Mark Farner (Guitar Player/Singer in the mid 80s thru the late 90s in every mid Atlantic tour* Mark Farner still does concerts to this day!
Blue Cheer was the first 3 man Hard, Heavy Rock band, Cream was second, and third was Grand Funk Railroad. Their vibes, sonic, concussions can never be found on a recording. The sound is always there.
Best band of the 70's. Great review
When I was in high school in the late 60s this was one of the biggest bands of the time they were right up there with CCR, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones I can remember riding around with my buddies smoking weed and listening to Grand Funk Railroad turned up as loud as we could stand in our 8 track stereos great reaction
Seen them in 74 , hell of a band
Hey T did you hear that bass? That bassist was 19 freaking yrs old.
Damn!
Heck, the other two weren’t but 20-21... incredible
Mel born in 51 . would be 18 in this vid.
@@TheAdventuresofTNT You really need to hear the Live Album. Every song on there is much more intense than the studio versions. Mel used lots of distortion and had his amps cranked for live shows. He had some of the best bass tone I've ever heard.
The best live band I saw in concert in the 70s, still remember how loud it was, awesome
Great Band! These guys Rock Bigtime!
This is the most intense, passionate live performance I've ever seen. And these guys were ALL under 21 when they performed this. And I'm certain I will die before a live performance ever equals this.
Folkd forget how INCREDIBLY HUGE they were for a few years. For decades, their concert at Shea stadium was the biggest 1 band concert in American history. Between all that made it in.. And all the kids in the parking lot.. over 100, 000 people showed up. And it was like that at every stop on the "foot stomppin music" tour. They broke arena records at every single stadium they played that tour.
One of my favorite bands, especially their early stuff. They got a little to much into pop later on for me. Anything of their red album is killer. Got this Thing on the Move is the song that first got me hooked. Grand Funk Railroad-Got This Thing on the Move - RUclips
This is like several songs in one. Amazing! And what an impact it must have made in -69...!!
This performance was recorded in Hershey, PA at the Hershey Community Center by WITF-TV channel 33 (PBS station) in 1969 for their show titled "The Show". There were only a few handfuls of people watching it live.
I saw them in 1970 and Atlanta Georgia one of the best live bands you'll ever ever see now the question is why are they not in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame yet. I heard they pissed off the record producers because they wouldn't give up their rights to their songs don't know whether it's true just what I heard they deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.
Mark Farner American band, "Grand Funk Railroad", played in a 4th of July 2019 celebration. You can see "Im your captain and Inside looking out" live.
Loved this group ... I never understood there were people putting them down saying they couldn't play!? Man, I was a drummer and I respect any trio that could do this! They were great.
"mean mistreater" is one of my favorites from GFR,I love this band, they sold out shea stadium faster than the beatles, believe it or not.
One of, if not the Best, live performances ever recorded!👍🏻
Hence the name, "Grand FUNK Railroad"...........incredibly talented 3 man band!!
My very first album waaaayyyyyyy back in the 70's was Grand Funk Railroad Shinin On! They were awesome!!!
Best band ever. Three guys, harmonica, cow bells, great bass, great singer, great drummer and great lead guitar. Heartbreaker is a great song.
I am 68 years young next week and Grand Funk RR was "hard rock" back in the 70's! I went to their concerts! Enough weed was being smoked that you didn't need any on you to get high!! 🤣🤣
Incredible every time I watch them! My older sister went to their concert and she fainted after 30 minutes and was so mad she mad the rest.
Saw Grand Funk about 15 years ago and they were amazing! Nearly blew the roof off The Beacon in NYC
I got to see them in live in 1970 at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Absolutely fantastic show! In the same year I also saw Steppenwolf and Led Zeppelin at the same venue, and graduated high school - it was a very good year.
This was my high school jams. I was a bigtime GFR fan and still am! This was the year before I went into the Marine Corp and it was my anthem for that period. This was when music was music and there was no auto-tune or electronic enhancements, just raw talent. It does make me mad though that these guys weren't given their flowers and entered into the R&R Hall of Fame.
I have every album of theirs. They should be in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame
Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is a joke.
14 years old when this came out and still jamming to it😎
I mean...I have gone through the grand funk railroad through life. It is great!
The lyric, ice cold water run in’ through my veins, caused me to go see them in the seventies when they were new. The new dope running through mine leaves the concert a blur.
They sold out Shea Stadium in 1971 or 72....they were big time my friend..let's see some more Footstompin' music from these legends....thanks from a huge Funk fan!!
I Come Tumblin'
@@pookiemartinez3909 That is one awesome overlooked song from GFR....the bass and drums are so heavy just matching perfectly with Mark's voice and choppy guitar.
@@andrewgarin2486 Live version kicks 7 zip codes in the arse. But recordings are poor..
Pure and unpretentious. Mark is one of the nicest people that you could ever meet.
I saw this performance on TV back in the 60s and it’s as good today as it was back then.
Three pieces, and funky as hell!
Been listening to these guys since the early 70s and never made the James Brown connection with Mark Farner's vocals, I believe you're spot on. I love watching people's reactions to this song in particular, the bass line and drum tempo is awesome. Great vid 👍
Only the older folks among us remember a time when GRAND funk were the hardest-hitting band in the world, bar none. Their legacy was cheapened later due to a switch to radio-friendly Pop, but, as you can see, in 1969 they were powerful enough to turn goat piss into gasoline !
They were the first concert l ever went to when l was 15 at The fabulous Forum and l never stopped going to concerts , until the last year but l plan to start going again as soon as l can🤟😜
SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL is a great song by them
I love that song.❤️✌️🌼
The James Brown comparison was spot on.
Ahhh.....this song got me in some very delicious trouble on a cold Saturday night a long time ago!! Love this band! Not a bad song from this group anywhere!!
18, 18 and 21 year old kids. AMazing talent.
They were innovators in how they blended multiple genres. They were kids here. Flint, MI The 60’s bands were jam bands.
There’s a reason why their name was Grand FUNK Railroad!
Hey T, definitely check out more GFR! From about 1969-72 Grand Funk and Black Sabbath were often mentioned in the same breath; examples of "acid rock" or "heavy rock" at that time. Black Sabbath I believe opened up for Grand Funk on their first US tour. GFR would later veer off to more mainstream rock, but still produced some killer tracks...very underrated band, and it's a crime they're not in the Rock-n-Roll HOF; sold out Shea Stadium faster than The Beatles!!
That’s what you call power rock! His vocals are like Janis Joplin but in a male form and more power! The drummer, phenomenal! And the bass player, he’s just as phenomenal ! this is my 20th time listening to this since I discovered this song. I know a lot of their other stuff but I never heard this song and especially like this, live !!
20, 20 and 19 years old....3 piece band producing a sound like this in unbelievable. So talented.....no wonder they went on to be the top band in the world from '69 to '75
Glad you liked this my brother. Grand Funk one of my favorite bands of all time. Mark Farner
Love it ! They have so many other hits! Great sound for a 3 piece group!👍🔥🔥🔥
Grand Funk Railroad power Trio from Flint Michigan. Should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Used to go see them every year when they came thru my home town. Always a bitchin show! Actually I think Mark Farner was the reason I grew my hair out.
They are hard and funky! Love the vibe
Mark Farner is one of my all time favorites. You are right. He has great vocals. I recommend Heartbreaker Live next by them.
Mark Farner sings & plays a lot of Christian music now. He was on the Mike Huckabee show a couple of weeks ago. This band is worth diving into.
Can't win 'em all, I guess...
@@wfemp_4730 you make it sound like losing is common in your life.
Singing Christian music sounds like a winner in my book, and the "Good Book" if you know what i mean.
@@lawrencesantana7253, I couldn’t agree more. ☺️
@@allisterfiend_2112 Let's put it this way, I haven't lost my personal integrity.
Back in the 70's GFR and Mountain were two bands that were very popular both bands having top 40 success, for GFR it was I'm your captain /closer to home for Mountain it was Mississippi Queen both bands deserve a deep dive into their catalog many great songs by both bands but I recommend starting with these 2 .
The Beatles sold out Shea stadium in 2 weeks, Grand Funk Railroad did it in 72 hours.
GFR formed in Flint Michigan in 1969, the same year they did this show.
Oh yeah! GFR rocked my world in my mid to late teens. I'm 67 now. The effin' RULED the rock world outside the radio station offering. Critiques hated them, their fans loved them.
I was listening to this album just yesterday!
Great minds...
One of the best songs and performances, EVER! GFR
You should really check out Black Licorice, Paranoid, I'm your Captain,American Band, Locomotion, my brain decided to take a break.
Great band!! So much amazing music!!!
I saw them in 1971 and they kicked ass! I didn't know then that they were not much older than me then. I really like Foot Stompin Music, Paranoid, Heartbreaker and Into the Sun, start with that. They had so many great songs , I know you'll love them like I did. Just 3 young guys making all that music.
Deep purple child in time live 1970, worth a listen no doubt 😁
Love the reaction !! GFR always left it all onstage when they played. Fans LOVED that !! They "up-staged" many bands when they opened, even Led Zep, who never allowed then to open for them again !! Rod Stewart and the Faces got Boo'ed off the stage after GFR opened for them. GFR was the originaters of "Stadium Rock" when they sold out Shea Stadium (54K, I think), in 3 days, It took the Beatles 3-weeks to sell-out Shea. They sold-out Stadiums around the world until 1976 when "Mis-management" (a friend) left them pennyless with NO rights to their music, and they lost their equipment too. It took decades of legal battles before Mark Farner (lead), was able to play GFR songs again. They were on their way to being the BEST BAND in the WORLD !! They still have a very loyal following (me included, and I'm 75 years young)
Actually this song was released by The Animals in 1966!💯🔥 This is a cover but Grand Funk Railroad owned it after this!💥😁❤✌
First time watcher... Love your reaction to this and I think you may really enjoy The Black Crowes.. you got my soul singing. Remedy. And a handful of their other songs. If you're looking for a blues influence there it is. The Allman Brothers Band... Whipping post and Soulshine. If you haven't check these out I really think you're going to enjoy them. Oh and before I forget check out a tune called Frankenstein.
Still the best live performance i have seen to this day! Thanks for the memories
"Heartbreaker" from 1974 live in LA = must see.
One the best rock bands of all time
Yeah I grew up with this man went to school with the two drummers a little brother yeah I'm in Flint Michigan
How could one be blessed with all this talent
Love the drumming sound for sure!!
Fastest group to sell out Shea stadium. Outsold even the Beatles.
Possibly the greatest rock & roll performance of all time. A criminally disrespected band.
Mark had a terrifying scream yet soulful voice
One of the best concerts I ever went to was GrandFunk and ZZ Top
IV SEEN THEM IN CONCERT
THEY JAM
& SOUND JUST LIKE THEY DO ON THERE RECORDS 💋
Fantastic band. Before my time
1969. My year of living dangerously.
*Grand Funk Hits------> Heart Breaker, Foot Stompin Music, I'm Your Captain, Paranoid, Loco Motion, Bad Time To Be In Love and many more!!!!*
Mark, Don and Mel...now thats rock I started high school 1969 its the golden era of rock music in all its forms...also the golden era of R&B easily.
I played with my band in 1971 doing Grand Funk songs, and we took 3rd place out of 18 bands because GFR were hot!
Ferocious front man Mark Farner killing it
This shit is dope. Been listening for years.
T N U C great drum solo.Watch it live
Gotta do "Heartbreaker"live next you will enjoy 😎grew up with these guys ✌️
This song was written and first recorded by the Animals (Eric Burden). Grand Funk Railroad and Mark Farner took it to the next level.
What I grew up listening to whilst smoking some good bud back when a fat sack was 25 bucks... This was the greatest era of music when all the hippies were around...Peace Love Dope was happening brother...✌
Damn, was this tight or what? Seriously!
Loved this! 💙 new fam member! 👋🏼
