Pricing is not just about the end product, it's also about all the time, effort, failures, and overhead in the prototyping of that product. Love your stuff man.
I've been making dies to make medals and tokens for about 20 years, going from hand engraving to pantograph, CNC mill, and now a fiber laser. One time I engraved a flat plate with an elongated penny design and ran it through my rolling mill with a penny as a proof of concept and it did work, but engraved rollers would obviously be the way to go. As for the smaller outboard rollers on your vivor rolling mill, any machine shop should be able to make those for you. Any coin roller who tells you that this is patented and secret is blowing smoke. The first penny roller came out in 1893 and the concept goes back to the 16th century when several countries used roller presses to make circulating coins. I have a fair amount of experience in this area, if I can offer any assistance, drop me a line.
I recycle plastic by hand and I always eyeballed these wire rollers wondering if I could use them with molten plastic. Plastic works surprisingly well with many metal working tools. I figured if I could etch into the rollers then I could "roll mold" small parts. Maybe even set up an extruder to do it automatically. Tho, I also figured a pasta or clay roller would work too. Either way I haven't really had the money to try these things until recently. Probably not going to try it for for a while because I have some better experiments to run but I really hope that other people start getting into this. Then I can just have somebody make me what I'm looking for. Thank you very much for this information and putting it out there. I'm so glad someone tried something like this.
@@cybyrd9615 May I ask? If it's about plastic then I would love to talk about it. I've been recycling by hand for probably about 12 years now and I've got stuff in my RUclips channel that no one's tried.
Cool stuff. I smashed pennies all the time...on my way to school I would put pennies on RR track and on my way home I would pick them up very smashed. Fun times growing up.
Penny Fact: If you stack 16 pennies on top of each other it makes 1 inch. If you lay 16 pennies next to each other in a line it makes 1 foot. ➡➡Ornablanks: ornablanks.com/products/ornablanks-metal-laser-engravable-ornaments-5-pack ➡➡ Use "HAMILTON10" for 10% off your order!
That sounds like one of those wisdom quotes. I am going to use it when the opportunity comes. Maybe it is a quote, but English is not my native language, and I haven't heard it.
The joy you showed when the first penny came out was great. Half an hour ago I had the same joy when my months long project came out as good as I dreamed it would (short video coming out soon, and long video in a week or two).
I'm adding this to our list of projects for my local makerspace, we had the same idea for a makerfair and we wanted to be able to offer guests the chance to get a selfie at a photobooth and engrave it on a penny. This will save a some money on buying blanks and making something unique and cool in the process. Thank you!
Very interesting. Awesome that you were able to complete a dream project. I have a few written down as well, I'm hope to get to some of them this year.
I love that you're doing more than just CNC stuff. I enjoy CNC content, but I have so many different things I do from vinyl decals and stickers, Tshirts, lasers, photography, and on and on... This is great. Now I just need someone to send me a fiber laser. LOL
I love it! I don't have a fiber laser, but I do have smashed pennies! Thanks, Hamilton. BTW, Got my OneFinity Journeyman X-50 set up last week. My son, wife and I are all learning CarveCo and I LOVE that we are doing it together. Cheers! DC
The sound is so much better with that mic. Upgrade well worth it. Though I'd prefer straight to camera delivery with lots of demo roll while carrying on voice over, rather than walking back and forth in front of the green screen. But opinion are like butt holes, we all have one and they are not all the same.
Thanks! The audio is much much easier to deal with now. I'm glad you noticed! And yeah still figuring out how I want to present the information- one day I'll get it down. Thanks for watching!
Another great video a lot of really good information. I’ll look forward to seeing the video you’re going to put out in the future about the Thunder Laser.
Well that was by far the most interesting and best presented laser video I've watched this evening. Thanks a lot for the taking the time to share this off your list; it's motivated me to get my list in order - I've just subbed too so am about to shmosey over to your channel vids and see what else you have!
We are a smashed penny family, recently infected my 8yo granddaughter! 🥴 It looks like you could get 4/5 designs across, then you would need to replace the roller. Did you happen to ask them about the roller replacement cost? Their product assortment is so wide, I suspect they do not manufacture them. Perhaps one of the maketember items could be a loading platform with 4/5 lanes that would sit in front, with a little penny pusher stick! 🤓 Great project, way outside the box!
Kind of a weird topic to make such an absolute statement about. I don’t have one because I don’t want one. Probably one of a million reasons why different people don’t have them.
Hamilton, when you say 15 hours of filming, is that the total amount spent on the actual making part of this process? In the video you said you spent days trying to figure this process out. Is that all encompassed in the 15 hours? Or do you have extra time in this project that isn’t in the numbers? Love your transparency!
Great question! Recently I've been trying to just time the actual filming and editing. That bleeds a little into the learning phase- but I try not to account for all the learning. I've found that I can't really time that. If I did this video would have taken well over 200 hours to get to this point. Learning software time and all over the last few years.
@HamiltonDilbeck, that certainly was different from most of your videos. It seems like you are quickly coming up with great ideas for the laser. Congrats.
Very interesting method of playing with the laser and money and making money with it, keep it on the right track and delight with all your ideas. What software did you use for the green screen and where can it be purchased. Thank you in advance for the information you share!
I know you don't like being critiqued, but man... stop pacing!!! You're walking back and forth in front of the green screen saying, "as you can see right here..." while you're blocking what you're saying we need to be watching. It's constant and it's annoying as hell! As much as I wanted to see what you're showing here, I've had to stop watching, because... I COULDN"T SEE WHAT YOU'RE SHOWING!. Sorry, dude, but I'm out of this one.

I enjoy all your content Hamilton, even topics/projects I'm not necessarily interested in. Keep it up. The world needs more individuals like you.

There are a variety of etching processes for hardened steel that could be used to make the roller die. Very cheap and easy.
Great video and fun project! Makes me wanna look into fiber lasers more

Glad you enjoyed it!

Cool project Ham. Amazed how much the big ones cost.

Great idea! Our 7 year old granddaughter is all about searching out penny smashers too. 😊
@dian3145, you could have 4/5 across and 2/3 around. That would make 8/15 designs in one roller.
@@jtcmlt1 those numbers sound much better. Thanks again for a unique project!!
You're a clever man.
ps. liked, commented and watched all the way through.
haha thanks!
People do not have fiber lasers because they are very expensive. That is the only reason
You're right, everyone has their own idea of what expensive means!

Nicely portrayed brother!

Fascinating! TY Subscribed. 😊
Was your laser 30W or 50W and what was the engrave time for a single coin design on the steel? Thanks!
50w and I cant remember- but it was seconds, not minutes. Very fast.
This company paid you for a sponsorship and yet their website shows they’re sold out or their only product.. you’d think they’d stock up
Lol, I checked in with them and they are back in stock now!
verry nice THANK YOU

Thank you in advance for the information you share!
Wouldn’t it be better to put a rotary 4th axis on your router and engrave them there without the huge expense of the laser??
Sooo cool. Great job
Love this!
Your pacing is very distracting engage the viewer more please excellent video keep making
Cut your grass. We're here for the CNC content, not lasers. :p
Make a robot that cuts my grass and ill consider it.
haha not wanting to talk about a process that's patented is silly, the patent is public record!
