- With Triumph gunning for the MT-07 with its latest Trident 660, we thought we'd take a look at how the two models would shape up in a theoretical head to head.
For clarity, we've not ridden the new MT-07 as yet, although with much of the work for 2021 being in the styling and Euro5 departments, we felt it was still enough to give the two machines speculative going over - until we can get them out on the road next year at least!

I find it quite revealing that after 7 or 8 years, manufacturers are still struggling to match the MT-07. Kind of a testimony to the quality of the original design and engine.
Had a 2017 "FZ"- 07 on Hawaii's Big Island. Most motorcycling fun of my ever lengthening life and that engine. Really like The Trident and nice that VD is showing the pirate-looking black version. Wish Yamaha would do a Trident/MT-09/SP/tech-like update to the 07. New MT-09/SP and new Monster are messing with my what's next mind . . .

Triumph for the style and futures and yamaha for reliability and torque
One major issue with Triumph is reliability. Having owned 3 Bonnevilles, a 900 Scrambler and ST1050 I had problems at very low miles on the Scrambler and ST. Should not have happened on premium bike. I now have a Thruxton 1200 which I am willing to take my chances with. BUT my FZ/MT 09 and FZ/MT07 are brilliant trouble free ride anywhee all weather all the time. I do not want to wrench any more than is necessary. The Trident 660 need to be on the market longer for any trust on my part.
How can you make a comparison video without even riding one... Better to mention specs comparison in the title
I have 2016 FZ07, does everything well, so most likely I'll keep it. The Triumph would be more of a lateral move for me, I am eyeing the Kawasaki z900 as an addition.
This comparison is premature and speculative. Just wait for an actual comparison next year and then put out this vid.
I would never cross-shop the Trident against the MT-07. Now if we were talking about the XSR700, you might have a point.

The xsr costs even more and on paper is no better. The mt-07 already looses on spec/price
I'm still going to wait and see for a model year. Just like anything else, there's kinks that always need to be worked out and that won't necessarily happen right away for the Trident. The MT07 has been around for a few years now, although not as packed with features, it's still not a bad choice either, maybe better for a rider who's not so beginner and doesn't care about the tridents safety features.

Basically exactly what I just said lol. I’ve ridden the current MT-07 and current Street triple. No one can deny that the Street triple is the more premium and better behaved bike. But the MT-07 is the pinnacle of smiles per miles. Lovely bike
The Trident has this 'exotic' feel to it. Different from the street triple which is razer sharp. The Mt07 is too much like a supermoto. Great in the hands of a hooligan, but not very charming in other areas. Great video!

I own a 2019 Yamaha XSR 700 but will be trading up for the Triumph Trident for several reasons! I’m an experienced 70 year old rider and it fits my riding style better along with a quick shifter and a more pliant and relaxed ride not to mention ride by wire with riding modes! Don’t get me wrong the Yamaha is a blast to ride but for me I will prefer the Trident! Nice compare...looking forward to a full ride comparison!
Haha...we have circa about 200 people in our moto-club. Oldest is 76 I think :) NOT a single experienced raider will put a statement like you. Replacing a bike you have chosen with all years of experience, for a bike you have NOT even seen in real life, touch or ride? @@hosuyakawayazuki Well let me guide your 200 plus group on why I made the statement I did. I have been riding a motorcycle since college. I've owned many bikes including BMWs, Harleys, Yamahas, Suzukis and Hondas both on and off road so I think I know what I like and don't. I recently bought a Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro which to me is an excellent motorcycle with many electronic aids/features that I like to have. The Trident has some of those, ride by wire allowing two riding modes and lessening throttle jerk which as happened to me more than once on the XSR 700! The Yamaha does not nor provide a quick shifter which I use all the time as well. Before I made that statement, I have researched and watched many trusted reviews from people who have seen the bike in person and have ridden it on the launch and they all say the same thing about the way it rides, the build quality and the research the Triumph engineers did to develop the bike. Listen, to each their own. We all have differing takes on what we like and that is why there is so much choice of new bikes! As I said, the XSR 700 which is based on the MT 07 is a great bike for many reasons with a great proven engine but for me and where I am at in my riding life, the Trident will fit my needs better! BTW...where are you located and where is your group out of?

I have tested quite a few bikes which on paper (and on youtube...haha) I thought will be perfect for me...they were not. Not because they are bad, they are good, just overhyped by business reviews, did not keep up with expectations :) MT 07 is good, for sure...is it great on any level? not really, not for me, but I understand you may like it. We are definitely, completely different...so, let's wish ourselves a good Xmas :) EOT for me.

MT for the win. Reliable. Good mpg. A tune away from being a little ripper. And (at least here) better dealer support.
Il be buying ther CB650 R over both. Here in Canada, all 3 of them are over $9000 in my area. The triumph is even more than the CB and the CB is a couple hundred more than the MT-07.
The CB is clearly a better build bike than the MT in terms of materials, Suspension, and breaks. Also looks much better, and makes way more power at the top of the rev range. The only thing the MT has going for it is the torque down low.
I think the pros of the CB outweigh the Pros of the MT.

@@BennyZ88 spec sheet doesnt tell the whole story. I had a cb650r and yes everything youre saying is true. But after 2,000 miles I swapped it for an MT-07 and never looked back. I am a rider thats just looking for fun and my bike is a toy. This isnt the case for everyone. Depends what youre after and most people dont know as they havent has the right amount of saddle time
Interested to see how the Trident sounds with an aftermarket exhaust, it looks great and I love the features but man oh man, cross plane sounds so damn good

Not sure why people are just forgetting triumphs are not the most reliable bikes. Yamahas are proven bullet proof
Uh Triumph is actually just as reliable and the R and D on this motor is about 20 years in the making. It also has a 10,000 mile service schedule compared to the yamaha (4000 miles) meaning cost of ownership is down compared between the two. The days of the 50's-80's being an "electrical nightmare" is a joke. Triumphs are just as reliable as the "rising sun" brands. I've worked in both industries for almost eight years. The Triumph will be the better buy hands down.

@@Adventure_blac real world experience... 13,000 miles in a year on a Triumph no issues at all. The Triumphs by warranty cases have less issues overall then any brand. The forums unfortunately are false.

Assuming Yamaha update the XSR700 as well then they will be targeting this market from 2 fronts. Will be interesting to see how well the Trident compares in the long run.
Which one handles better?
The MT-07 sounds infinitely better than the Trident for sure. But I prefer the design of the Trident. The Trident also has upside forks so less un-sprung weight, and more available options for the person who wants to deck out their cheap bike lol. The MT-07 has better brakes though and looks and sounds like a maniac. Overall, I love the look of the Trident, but I cannot pass up that cross plane twin bark so my money would go to the MT-07
I have an xsr 700, a great nippy bike but I’ve never liked the sound of the parallel twin even with a new end can on. The Trident with the Zard exhaust on sounds amazing but it is around £1000 ~I don’t think you can get an end can for the Trident yet🤷♀️🇬🇧
To everyone complaining that the MT-07 ‘review’ is not based on the ‘21 model... it’s Yamaha - it’s not going to be a lot different.
the 21 model has a new dash, new slightly wider handle bars, an LED headlight, slightly larger front discs and some styling changes ..... so the chassis and suspension are unchanged, as is the engine output .. the bike is 95% the same as last year and will ride 99% the same. As you said ... not a lot different ...
3 years on an 07. Great bike, no fuss, just plenty torque in the midsized category. That said, it's basic, very. No ABS, no Traction Control, mediocre stock suspension, brakes that do better with a double-sintered upgrade no doubt. It can reach 180 effortlessly, but barely touch 200. If you want more sound, punch a couple of 10mm holes into the muffler, but it may need an AFR tune later to compensate. Position of the dials is of course lousy, it's mounted too far backwards, but the most annoying bit about the 07 has to be the signal lamp switch. Just don't bother.
Otherwise, the bike is fast, easy to maintain, great fun to ride, has many aftermarket parts, and definitely rides better with a set of S22 tyres coupled with Hyperpro shocks and springs set. Bonus if you replace the H4 with an Osram Night Breaker Laser.
The MT will probably outsell the Triumph, it is Yams best selling model after all ..... but I'd be willing to bet the Triumph does very very well too and steals some customers away from potential Yamaha purchases. It's a cracking bike for the money.
Shouldn't the title 2021 Trident v 2021 MT07 be restricted to when you've actually ridden both bikes on the same road in similar conditions?
We all know this is the test everyone wants to see but you effectively pull folks in with the title when you haven't even ridden the new MT07 and the Trident has mostly been ridden at altitude in Tenerife so affecting its performance.

Anyone know how good triumph reliability is? As a first year bike, would you wait a year for them to fix the bugs?
This motor has been in development for almost 20 years there are absolutely no bugs with this bike. And as far as a first-time rider this is a get-on and ride kind of bike where the service intervals are every 10,000 miles. They're really capturing a ease of mind and safety knowing that you can walk out and start the bike up and go.
Tell that to the tiger 800 owners with gearbox and camchain issues.
The triple engine and gearbox has been around a while. They've played with some bits over the Street Triple versions of it, but it isn't going to be massively different. I guess have a look at MCN for how they rate it.
My personal experience of a Street Triple and Speed Triple, is they've both been okay, but I'm only one person.

Yamaha does production in Nippon not off-shore like Triumph.

when ever I ride an MT07, "I've had several" I have to smile and do wheelies and go as fast as the bike will go. I don't think for the money anything can really touch the yamaha!

Triumph will always have a better fit and finish, better bike in general, especially for beginner. The Yamaha is better for Kyles.

No real upgrades for the new MT07, if only they upgraded the suspension the Yamaha would have a fighting chance... hands down the trident wins this contest.
At this price point why can't Yamaha stretch to USD forks cb650 USD. Trident 660 USD. Even the mt-125 and mt-03 have USD
But the Trident also has crap suspension. So how does the trident win hands down ? More expensive slightly less power. How does it compare when you rode them both ?

@@lunoirxx true is the same for adjustable. Can be adjustable and still a load of crap. Anything other than USD in 2021 is rather poor though. Certainly can give a lot more flex with conventional forks even with a good brace

Literally same, i mean what's all the ooh's and aah's about Trident's look ? Because it looks retro ? To me, it looks like it has been released 20 years ago. The headlight shape (straight from the last century), that uni-seat, couch-like design that i hate, the fuel tank shape. It really looks like it has time-traveled, but if they wanted to attract older motorcyclists/retro lovers, they surely did. I'd take Yamaha, or any othe Japanese/Italian bike over this one. I love the Street/Speed Triple's and Daytona's design though, that's why it's really a shame that the Trident looks so outdated and not modern, because i will be looking for a bike in a year, or two and specs of this one are perfect.

I really like the 660, but I've heard that the gas throtle has a small delay. The MT07 has a regular front suspension, which feels outdated.
I test rode trident today, there is definitely a throttle delay. At first I thought it was broken . Anyway, I walked away. I won't be buying Trident

Triumph wins in handling and engine feel. The MT has the old school ruff punch. That said the Triumph is close and wins on track
The Trident Is much more the rival to the XSR700 than the mt07.
It is practically the same bike... headlight and seat are the biggest difference.the same engine,same suspension,same brakes,...
@@punkrockdidi yes, I heard they changed the mt suspension one or two years ago. Before it was worse than that of the xsr. Even though the stock suspension of the xsr is also not great ;)
Actually the MT-07 is too hot for me engine wise, I want to be able to have a more relaxed riding feel, so I am looking forward to testing the Trident, I do like the look of it quite a bit more than the MT-07. BUT I do not like that exhaust sound at all, it sounds so tinny in those videos, wish that bike was a more relaxed twin with a more bonniville engine sound…would be the best of both worlds, modern styling with classic engine feel.

Definitely the Triumph. For a more mature ride. Some riders don’t enjoy or sometimes doesn’t want that twitchy throttle. Sometimes you want to drive a Mercedes than a Dodge Charger.

You say that "younger riders will prefer the more relaxed driving position of the MT-07.." while in reality though, younger riders use less of their logic and will prefer to what makes them look "better" in this case that Trident looks better, and also better in specsheet which what actually attract younger rider, the MT will probably attract more of the experienced rider who looking for a gentle relaxed entry level bike for riding around town

What I recommend is simply buy the old version of MT-07 from second hand and u will get it for half the price and also Japanese bikes are known for their reliability, so u won't have much problem with the bike maintenance.
I'm new to the bike world and wanna get my first bike. I'm hooked to the trident, honestly.
I'll go for trident because only reason why I will not buy MT is Yamaha didn't launch it in India. And they don't have plans in this year. So there no other option. Yes Z650 is available but I don't like that bike.
Street triple discontinued? What is the point of this bike?
To meet Europe's A2 licence restrictions, and fill a gap in the market and compete directly with the likes of the MT07, SV 650, Z650 and cb650r
Street Triple is still going, but the A2 660cc "S" variant of the Street Triple, I can't see Triumph selling many of those, it's about £1000 dearer in the UK. The Street Triple RS, well that's in a different category of bike.
Not sure about giving the dash win to the Trident but ok.

I don't know if it's me or Visordown, but one of us doesn't know what hypernaked means. I would call these middleweight nakeds, and hypernaked is for things like the MT-10 or 1290 Superduke.

The triumph is suppose to have big intervals.
Your average service is $300-$350 USD minor services every 10,000 miles. Major services (Valves) will be closer to $800 USD and that's every 20,000 miles. The Yamaha is oil every 4,000 miles.
Yeah I'm am aware of the 10k service intervals, as Kevin mentioned the valve check is quite a bit. It's £525 for the Tiger when your doing your valve check in the UK which I find a bit extreme.
I would go fo the mt07 if it weren't for that headlight...

I wasn't too impressed when I rode the old MT07 and new one looks like its just an update on looks.
MT07 was fun to wheelie though; meh in the canyons, and okay-ish around town.
These are not hyper nakeds. They are budget friendly naked bikes leaning more towards sport riding. They built to be cheap and cheerful. Especially the Triumph. If the Trident is a Hypernaked what does that make the Street triple 765? A super hyper ultra naked? 😂
Only one way, these Triumph named bikes, will be better, then the Yamaha. They have to be priced, like the Taiwanese produce, they are. Nuff said..

Nice comparison but does this 8 minute clip need 8 adverts in it to watch. 2 before and 3x2 during. Yes you can skip but one as per minute is a bit much.
Looking forward to your 2021 MT-09 review. You can pick up a new 2019 CB1000r for the same price or less now than the upcoming MT-09, so I'm not sure which to get.

On track days a lot of the triumph Daytona bikes blow engines. Triumph have many gearbox issues. The mt-07 engine is in the tracer and T-7 + xrs700 and has no real problems so far.
@@chrishart8548 In my honest opinion triumph went through a stage of development as a very small manufacturer, early models of the Daytona had slightly weaker gearboxes (they don't like to be abused or to miss services) they are the bike of choice for track days due to there durability, effortless performance and low maintenance many of my fellow adrenaline junkies have seen them go on and on around the track no worries. I'm still a Japanese bike fan though and allows will be. Thanks for the reply.🙂

Prefer the looks of the Yamaha but the triumph is more bike. I was gonna buy the mt07 this spring but once the triumph was announced and I saw the ride reviews it was a no brainer. Triumph it is for me!

I purchased the FZ back in 15 when it debuted. Bike was stolen and totaled. Haven’t bought another bike since unfortunately. Placed deposit on the trident to get a feel for something different and to introduce triumph into my life. With anything there will be mixed reviews, to each there own. The only thing that made me look at the XSR700 was the sound that parallel twin makes, it felt good with a titanium Akrapovic. But again, looking to try something different.
The Trident isn't a hipster bike. Hipsters like cafe racers like the thruxton or retros like the bonneville if they ride larger bikes at all. You won't see many "hipsters" on the Trident. Most of these millennial soy sipping weirdos who ride like Vespas 🛵

Visually, the Trident looks better to me. The MT-07 lights, yuck. The XSR variants are more my style, but the tank doesn't look quite right on that.
I've ridden and owned a few Triumph triples, Street Triple A2 660cc derestricted to 94 bhp , that was pretty good. Currently I've got a Speed Triple RS, well because of the massive torque and QS almost makes it like an auto, and really easy to ride, poor gear selection doesn't really seem to matter, it pulls in any gear. I really like the Triumph triples.
I read a lot of comments below saying Triumphs are unreliable. Obviously, I'm only one person, the 3 I've had, and I've still got 2 of them, have so far been very good.
Haven't had a go of an MT-07 yet, I would like a ride. Have to see if I can get a test ride in 2021.
Most comments I've read seem to say that MT-07s have slightly naff suspension, OEM tyres a bit naff, and can suffer from corrosion, they do all seem to love the CP2 engine.
In the Yamaha range, I guess the bike that could appeal to me the most is the Tracer 900 GT, because well it's a triple, and it has a fairing, and the styling is actually quite good.
I really would like to get a ride of one of them.
I love everything about the Triumph, except for that awful sound....🥴
The current Speed Triple RS , Euro 4 though until jan 2021, with high level Arrow exhausts does sound a lot better. I haven't heard the Trident, but a Speed Triple RS sounds a lot more "meaty" than a Street Triple RS.

The engineers at hinckley didn't have the mt07 in mind because the Yamaha always will skimp on suspension,brakes and quality. Just for being "twin" cylinders proved that! Cross plain nonsense and all. Why didn't yamaha make a 3 cylinders 700cc middle weight?Kawasaki's z650 is torqy too but no fancy gimmick crossplane there? And you still get darn good brakes and suspension. Built quality is superb! Look at triumph using 675 motor with quality shocks, brakes and dash, look at the power generation of the bike and tork figures, the availability of a triple in itself shows triumphs commitment to quality& value for money. Yamaha build to fit the price tag cheap! With the motto " cheap side of Japan" is more suitable with corrosion engine covers & swing arm parts and really bad suspension and brakes, it won't matter the fuel consumption figures if you don't ride it at all do you? The only bikes other than TRIDENT that may get the piece of the pie are Kawasaki z650 or Honda cb650r. mt07 bad choice,period.
Actually only the MT10 has a true crossplane engine. Did you ever ride a bike with the CP2? One of the most responsive, versatile units ever built, whatever bike Yamaha stick it in. And the corrosion issues were fixed donkeys years ago after issues with the first releases.
@@simonthomas5367 yes I did. Not just the mt07 , but also the BMW f900 and Kawasaki's z650. Nobody can convince me that a twin inline engine that mimics a vtwin will be smoothe and " better" than a regular twin engine. Why you want the terrible vibes of vtwins? Why? Have you ridden the nc750 engine? Utter nonsense!

@@juangarcia-xs8oo yes senor, you are right. The gsxs750 could easily be the better choice than TRIDENT. I've left the Suzuki in hindsight because it's really heavy and the profile of the bike is wide. The MT7 and TRIDENT is lighter, slimmer profiles to make them very versatile bikes. My opinion, anyway. MuchosGracias....
