For the most insane that it looks, the Don Kirshner's Rock Concert was broadcast in Brasil in the saturday afternoons in the 70's. I was lucky to watch some very good rock'n'roll back then.
Not insane at all. Here in Costa Rica it was broadcasted weekly in the 70s, that's how we knew groups like UFO, Golden Earring, Kansas and many others.
For anyone curious, here are the lyrics that Thijs Van Leer sings at 10:27: O kerstnacht, schoner dan de dagen Hoe kan Herodes het licht verdragen Dat in uw duisternisse blinkt En wordt gevierd en aangebeden Zijn hoogmoed luistert naar geen reden ---------------------------- English translation: O, christmaseve more beautiful than the days How can Herod bear the light That blinks in your darkness And is celebrated and worshipped His pride listens to no reason How noisy it sounds to his ears ---------------------------- Excerpt from the 17th century dramatic play "Gijsbrecht van Aemstel" (The song of the noblemen) by the dutch playwriter Joost van den Vondel to inaugurate Amsterdam's first city theatre. I recently discovered this version and it blew my mind! Amazing musicians to say the least. As a guitarist, I find Akkermans improvising so incredibly intruiging. His tone, melodic sensibility, creativity and technicality, at that time of music history, is inspiring. Focus deserves alot of cred!
From Tokyo. I remember buying a Focus video for $ 40 because I wanted to see it. We Japanese are now in an era where focus images can be viewed for free. thank you.
Very first time i am watching (and hearing) this version..... Totally outstanding. Phenomenal.... Oh, i am so in love with Van Leer and the gang! Such talents.
Pay attention to how Akkerman uses the volume knob from 05:56 to obtain his, then famous, 'violin sound'. Nothing special nowadays, even replaced by some piece of digital equipment no doubt, but then he was the master for this technique!
Jan was actually not the first person I heard using that technique although he was the first that I actually saw doing it. Martin Stone from the band Mighty Baby did something similar, go to about 5.30 on this and you can clearly hear the same technique. Actually listen to the whole thing the guitar playing is beautiful. I 'borrowed' that technique from both of them but mostly used a volume pedal to achieve the same thing. ruclips.net/video/pt1i4T6Eybk/видео.html
If I'm not mistaken the audience is going beserk from 13:24, you can hear it in the background but it's lost in the mix of course since they didn't have mikes.
As far as I know, they weren't actual live audiences for the Don Kirshner Rock Concert recordings. They add in the footage of an audience and applause at the right spots. The guys from Kansas talk about it in the documentary Miracles Out of Nowhere (which I highly recommend)

Unbelievable how talented and blessed they had been !

Akkerman. But… yes I agree!
Jan Akkerman is regarded the greatest gitarist of all times by many, including Brian May (Queen) ...

Prachtig, dank voor de upload!

Also Nils Lofgren was a pioneer
I read somewhere that Roy Buchanan popularized that technique during the sixties when he only played live.
Masters....!!
Who says prog isnt good? Excellintie!!
Good afternoon, Evert Van Der Hik. it's a beautifully riveting video. thank. :)
Very good!!
Jan's solos are great here, better than on the studio version.
A shorter version in all its raw nature! Focus one of the best bands from The Netherlands.
Remember when this came on. That closing was memorable.
