In 1979 I was hitchhiking from Amsterdam to a place near Den Haag when we (also the girl who was also hitchhiking in the same direction) were picked up. She sat in front; I sat in the back. And suddenly my eye fell on a box with a text on it: "especially made and packed for mr Thijs van Leer". I took a good look... Indeed: it was him!!!

I’ve been a big fan of Focus ever since I picked up their second and third albums while I was stationed in Germany in the ‘70s. I never picked up their fourth album (sure wish I had), and just discovered the song ‘Hamburger Concerto’ today! And what a song it is… it is epic in my opinion, a true signature song for the band. Thank you, Focus… I’m still a fan of yours after all of these years. 👍👍

Notice the complete lack of pedals for Jan? He got many of his "effects" with just his guitar controls and his amp cranked to '11'. There is one on/off switch on the floor, which was perhaps for his Leslie cabs? (*Very* few guitarists used those live BTW, another player who did was Roye Albrighton)

When people talk about the great heroes of guitar, particularly in rock, prog and so forth, the usual subjects are always mentioned, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Clapton, Rory Gallagher and so forth. Well, great respect to all of them for their achievements, but none of them could play close to Jan Akkerman in any terms. I'd like to see Jimmy Page tackle a lute! Jan can play just about anything, with aplomb, dexterity and a great sense of excitement and melodic content, whether classical, rock or jazz; but not just play, he excels in every genre. Actually, I would love to hear Jan tackle a simple rootsy blues and hear what he'd do with that form.

He had a sense of far off and right there. You'd think he was going to fall off or get lost but he always seemed to find a way to bring it home. No small feat from the bassist either to keep up or haul in Akkerman. Moving waves indeed. These accolades apply to those two men. The other two are Masters in their own right.

A much better live performance of Hamburger Concerto than the one on the Classic Rock Series DVD.

The harmonies that happen at around 13:45 show the brilliance of and conflict between Thijs and Jan. There are certain moments in this concert that are among the best this band ever did. In that regard, nothing against Colin, but Pierre should have been here.

Agreed. Pierre was and still is in a class unto himself. The "fireworks show" impersonation he does at the end of Eruption is absolutely brilliant.

Great wonderful times! There was no internet (only for some persons of places such as NASA), cable TV (not in Brazil) and technology was very more simple, but the bands were amazing. I've always loved Focus, one of the best live shows I've ever seen, in 2004, unforgetable!!!!

Starting Sylvia in up-tempo is cool but then they must keep up the tempo and not decrease as they did. It's a shame cause it's soooo beautyfull. One of the most beautyfull "songs" ever written.
