I am 62 years old I have heard anything from 20s gypsy music to Modern Day stuff as a musician of 40 plus years I have heard many many musicians and rubbed elbows with many great musicians. Yes there are a lot of great musicians out there today also but they are not in the mainstream. I was speaking from my heart and not my head I should have said there's nobody in mainstream music today that compares to them.
I am 62 and saw them live in 1972 when I was 12. I have seen a lot since then. How could I have known I was watching my favourite band with the best guitarist I would ever see ( sorry Guthrie and Alan ) at that young age.
I saw Jan Akkerman play at a small venue here in the UK about 10 years ago. He was magic. At one point he busted a string, kept on playing whilst walking to the back of the stage. He proceeded to change the string whilst still playing. Never missed a beat. Insane.
Akkerman is the best guitarist many have never heard of. For those that have heard of him I would put him in top ten all time! The dude can and does anything on guitar!
I like how this is just the speed they go at this song, not just on Midnight Special under the time restraint. I love Colin Allens drum fills before the breaks.
This is how to be extremely passionate about something while having a ton of fun doing it. Spectacular performance by all members. Credit to those who brought yodeling into rock 'n roll! Thank you for posting this gem.
Midnight Special showed the intensity with which they could perform, but this version is a lot more playful. I love the cheeky Akerman nudges thrown in randomly, which van Leer takes in good humour like as if they're just jamming in a garage.
I like Jan Akkerman’s guitar performance very much. His guitar makes out an astonishingly strong notes and he has a heart of music, as well as an incredible skill of playing the guitar. How old was he at that time?He has not only outstandingly command on guitar , but also musical heart which will penetrate into the heart of each individual of audience.
I think Ackerman must have been bored stiff of playing in Focus as he just iprovised playing this. In all the videos I've seen he never comes close to playing it the same way twice!
Akkerman is superb....So much ahead of his time...He is writing the 80s shred book here and no one notices....
Blows Clapton Page etc away 🎼
If your not impressed by the talent of each one of these guys, then there's no hope.
This never gets old. They were all ridiculously talented but that guitarist was so far ahead of his time its insane
There is nothing out there today that compares to the level of musicianship these guys have unbelievable
Oh come on , they’re not thát bad….
Most today don't even play instruments!
I think you need to listen to some other music because there are plenty of bands from this period and now that displayed some serious musicianship

Those rediculous claims. He ho knows all and even the most hidden songs present today. Such claims just attest a very small horizon.

One of the most musicaly gifted bands of that era...versatile, spontaneous and with a very distinct sound of their own.

I can't understand how Thijs smoked like a chimney and had that clear, crispy, super tuned yodelling voice !
Akkerman is the best guitarist many have never heard of. For those that have heard of him I would put him in top ten all time! The dude can and does anything on guitar!
It's 1974 and Akkerman is tapping and sweep picking. Who else was doing this stuff? Pretty much nobody else. Eddie Van H was paying attention.
Steve Hackett
I just heard this for the first time last summer. It blew me away!!
I like how this is just the speed they go at this song, not just on Midnight Special under the time restraint. I love Colin Allens drum fills before the breaks.
The last time I saw Thijs and friends was in Dordrecht Netherlands 2017... Still with full of energy and great sense of humour....
Best jamming song ever written.
So gifted these guys streets ahead of their time takes me back ! 👍😄🎸🎸🎸
The guys NUTS! Yodels, plays organ, flute, whistles,AND scats like nobody's business!
These are truly the mad geniuses of progressive rock in the 20th century and beyond!
Jan Akkerman, still the string king..!
This is how to be extremely passionate about something while having a ton of fun doing it. Spectacular performance by all members. Credit to those who brought yodeling into rock 'n roll! Thank you for posting this gem.
THIS is DEFINITELY the best version i've ever heard!!!
❤️☺️
I grew up with the radio and have never seen them play it twice the same. This is one of the funnest renditions I’ve seen. Absolute talent and lunacy!
They are crazy great.I to remember this group from my teens.
I totally agree Joe!
Mind-blowing
This blows the doors off anything around now.
These guys were sick!! F***ing awesome!!
Spectacular in every sense of the word. Rock on!✌️
This is without doubt the best version I've heard 👏👏👏👏👏thanks so much for sharing 😎 🎵 🎼 🎸🎹 😉
This is my drug of choice !
Midnight Special showed the intensity with which they could perform, but this version is a lot more playful. I love the cheeky Akerman nudges thrown in randomly, which van Leer takes in good humour like as if they're just jamming in a garage.
The Midnight Special version had to be sped up to fit in the 4 to 5 minute frame. It was insane!
Saw them live in 1972 they were amazing.
Jan Akkermans solo is so unpredictable

A true artist,a master of tone, musicality and ability
Akkerman was around 27 or 28 at the time of this performance
live at the Rainbow ,JA just shreds!!
musicianship at it best
ROCKANDROLL AT IT'S BEST!
I just love Thijs van Leer. On the parts where he is not lead I have never seen someone trying so hard to not just rock out on an insane level as he.
Thx for this rare one. 😍
I love the manic faces from they keyboard dude,he is having serious fun
Fantastic technical but emotive at the same time. Akkerman conveys the feeling of festive Renaissance.
Savagely good Akkerman & Van Leer

And thus, Heavy Metal was born, albeit a very gleeful wee thing it may have been at time
Gérard Depardieux on guitar.
Seriously, how many octaves does he have?
in 1978, he could reach 3, this video is 1974 and he can reach a couple of more notes

Hey, clearly no drugs in Nederland
The best musical nonsense recorded 😜
Here you really miss the original better drummer Pierre van der Linden.
I think Ackerman must have been bored stiff of playing in Focus as he just iprovised playing this. In all the videos I've seen he never comes close to playing it the same way twice!
What's up with the sloppy guitar intro? Sounds nothing like the record. The guitarist needs to 'focus' more on his playing.
so much camera work sucked back then
Check out Diesel.another dutch band.
