First clip, you can see all the holes in your exhaust lol
There's more holes in that exhaust than in the shield
Evan lawrence r/wooosh i think
@@darkmind1728 yes, that's definitely a r/wooosh
Many of the shown machines seem to have serious compression issues
Yeah...if you could get that left stack replaced, that'd be great. Thanks.
CSX: Hey, can I copy your homework?
Network Rail: Sure, just change it up a bit so it doesn't look too obvious.
Do you realize what would happen if I hand in _my_ homework, in _your_ handwriting?
If you’re talking locomotive color schemes, it’s the other way around. CSX is the older company and they’ve been using that paint scheme for decades.
@@nthgth I'll get kicked out of school! You wouldn't want that to happen, would you?
@@brycmtthw Wrong. British Rails corporate liverys have been around since the mid 1960s.
@@brycmtthw British rail started in the late 40s😂
8:13 That's always the key to getting a cold engine to get running --- if you can just get one cylinder firing and spinning the crankshaft over, then eventually the others will follow suit one-by-one as they each get warm and dry enough :D
8:27 - I love the taste of soot in the morning. I like my coffees oily and dirty, Kenny

7:00 what the hell ITS ON FIRE
just a blown turbocharger, nothing to worry about
When you have to clean all windows after starting an engine. Than you have a real engine xD
Some gnarly exhaust leaks there bud
CSX locomotive not a cold start but a blown turbocharger
Yup
And the longer they don't shut it down, the better the chance for a runaway engine
Was the air moving over the train keeping that fire from speading? (or were they just like "Fire, aint nobody got time for that!"
@@keith_5584 it's contained in the exhaust which can handle the temperature. So unless something is leaking in the engine bay that could catch on fire you don't really have anything to worry about.
How does a turbo blow out though
nothing better than the smell of torque in the morning
This video was generously sponsored by Volkswagen.
cummins more likely
Volkswagens Diesel engines are most clear diesel engine in the world 🤣
@@ljasimsa3346 I heard that until they got caught cheating.
@@rogersmith9086 True, but anyway i love Volkswagen
As you may love gaypride :)
Like the looks of the British rail class 40
This comment section is basically "Thats not a cold start. Thats a blown turbocharger." And "I love the smell of diesel smoke in the morning!"
The locomotive looks like its got a blown turbo to me, it's not trying to start and warm up!
Hi Rob, a turbo runs off the exhaust gasses so there is nothing to run a turbo at cranking speed. Even a positive displacement supercharger struggles to raise the compression ratio for ignition. Worn rings and cylinders probably the cause.
It's got to get to a certain speed, lookup British Cummins generators cold starting. They smoke like a freight train until the turbo catches up, most of that smoke is half used fuel
they are just big-ass engines and they need more time to warm up than "normal" ones
Roger Smith this is true, but I think he is talking about the train at 6:55. It does look like a blown turbo, it isn’t just smoke. If it were cold, it wouldn’t have a straight flame thrower coming from the exhaust, especially at idle speed, which the train was moving, and revving. Another thing to point out, it was black smoke, and the fire was consistent, not at random like a misfire or something. If it were cold, it wouldn’t be rolling coal like that, it would be grey, or white, sort of like other engines.
Braelyn Proctor Yeah it does look like a blown turbo, with these engines they rely so heavily on the forced induction that when the turbo blows, quite a bit of fuel can enter the hot exhaust and cause those flames. You notice the train was also moving fairly slow, it is possible that this was due to the lack of power caused by the blown turbo (although it could’ve been a low speed limit area, or stopping due to the blown turbo).
I do a cold start every morning when I go to work in my truck
Makes sense
Lucky 💖
Imagine being able to design and build some of these engines. What an achievement 😍
I think that first one wants a new stack, I thought those holes where just a guard didn’t realise they where actually exit holes lol haha
Hi guys on your last video I manage to see a kenworth truck is a cummins 290 engine with jake brakes, remained me of my days at cummins metropower, today is called cummins metropolitan, ohh yess those winter days where your diesel engines had to have real good batteries and starters or would hard to start those beasts, but once they were going would do their jobs.
i love two stroke diesel sound
Man I love the sound of those deltics 2 stroke engines
That isn’t a Deltic
Reminds me of my days in transportation!
The clip of the CSX wasn’t a cold start, blown turbo
Ahhh yes. Nothin like a good ol’ GE Toaster
Great video as always...I like IT!!!! ..... Regards from Romania
Great job on the video👍🏻

I don't understand.. at least she is trying to do something about climate change..
Oh yes. What a collection of fine specimens. I would too be cranky if someone woke me up from deep sleep. Diesels do hibernate.
excellent video, snow & cold weather plus the smell of diesel! doesn't get any better! ❄️🚚🛢️
Should put a video of our DAF CF. Had to fit a red strobe light by the exhaust as it smokes and then "Snatches" and will launch random firespits for about 2 mins... Dangerous to get near, but runs PERFECT afterwards. Great truck
I love the sound of a Sulzer!!
Me too but there ain’t no Sulzers on there my friend
Some most excellent ploomage.

Johny_SK it is actually a Blown Turbo
I was thinking something was wrong.
8:29 COFFEE'S READY!!!!!
LOL
I wonder if I could roast marshmallows on that locomotive
If you wanna die, sure!
Roast tree huggers
Probably, but you might not want to eat them
excellent. i find this mesmerizing. But think of the poor Diesel.
Yeah I work on diesel trucks in our fleet. The oil burners are now on their last ditch effort to stay alive in today's strict emissions. They are no longer simple, and are very high cost of ownership. Parts are expensive and have a high failure rate in the emissions system. I personally own and drive a 84 mazda built perkins 4 cylinder diesel Ford ranger. I love its simplicity, and it will last forever giving me over 40mpg. I am putting the parts together to convert it to waste veggie oil as we run our international dt466 heuis on it for 10 years with only 1 injector replacement.
@@andrewbartleman9169 I've wanted a diesel ranger for a long time. Hard to find now though.
I use drive big truck and operate heavy equipment in Calgary, I have never had the issues these guys are starting a big ole diesel. Not even in 40 below temps.

is there anyone still alive around the place where you are starting your truck?
I know that train locomotives burn up to 300 liters of fuel just to start it in such conditions. Its true.
Alen Lekol they don’t burn it it just comes out the exhaust
@@hughjarse4627 its still 300 liters of fuel gone for a start, "burnt" was meant as wasted... with 300 liters of fuel i can drive my self 3.5 months to my job and back, this beast wastes it in a minute for a cold start xDDD its pretty damn amazing or sad idk.
Alen Lekol yeah I know what you mean it’s pretty mind blowing
Its not a waste. Rail shipping is the 2nd most efficient method for moving things.
300 litres of fuel is a lot of fuel it's not possible to burn that amount in that time frame
the 4th clip i see that and think "i want smores now"

The D-9 40-CW is cooking a turbo, not starting up!
Ohhh yeahhhhhhh
first one's exhaust leaks like a sieve
Old fashioned super efficient high flow exhaust!
Ha, first one was a classic case of jumping too soon
In the first clip what’s the purpose of the long exhaust if the holes are holes the purpose of the holes so it can kinda cold it up
Sounded like it was sitting for a long time.
6:57 This CSX GE ET44AC isn’t powered by a Cummins, a Detroit, ETC.. none of them are. There’s company’s that are named EMD and GE. They are the locomotive builders and they build the diesel engines too. The second unit, a Dash 8 is having some turbo problems. EMD has been sold to caterpillar, and GE Is now owned By WABTEC.
While true for the GE locomotives, EMD was owned by GM then sold off. EMD changed hands a few times and is now owned by CAT.
GE sold off their locomotive division as well. Now owned by Wabtec, which used to be a division of Westinghouse.
The locomotive sounded like it had a alco diesel engine in it, could be wrong but sure smoked like an alco.
I was talking about the first one, the second defiantly is emd or ge
That second one though defiantly is having some turbo issues.
There we go.
"Broken Diesel Engine compilation" would be more appropriate.

Blown turbo. Those engines have enough power that they'll keep running even with a blown up turbo
