    • @rogersmith9086
      @rogersmith9086 4 года назад +39

      Hi Rob, a turbo runs off the exhaust gasses so there is nothing to run a turbo at cranking speed. Even a positive displacement supercharger struggles to raise the compression ratio for ignition. Worn rings and cylinders probably the cause.

    • @lb4899
      @lb4899 4 года назад +23

      It's got to get to a certain speed, lookup British Cummins generators cold starting. They smoke like a freight train until the turbo catches up, most of that smoke is half used fuel

      they are just big-ass engines and they need more time to warm up than "normal" ones

    • @braelynproctor9175
      @braelynproctor9175 4 года назад +33

      Roger Smith this is true, but I think he is talking about the train at 6:55. It does look like a blown turbo, it isn’t just smoke. If it were cold, it wouldn’t have a straight flame thrower coming from the exhaust, especially at idle speed, which the train was moving, and revving. Another thing to point out, it was black smoke, and the fire was consistent, not at random like a misfire or something. If it were cold, it wouldn’t be rolling coal like that, it would be grey, or white, sort of like other engines.

    • @TheBobcat418
      @TheBobcat418 4 года назад +11

      Braelyn Proctor Yeah it does look like a blown turbo, with these engines they rely so heavily on the forced induction that when the turbo blows, quite a bit of fuel can enter the hot exhaust and cause those flames. You notice the train was also moving fairly slow, it is possible that this was due to the lack of power caused by the blown turbo (although it could’ve been a low speed limit area, or stopping due to the blown turbo).

      Yeah I work on diesel trucks in our fleet. The oil burners are now on their last ditch effort to stay alive in today's strict emissions. They are no longer simple, and are very high cost of ownership. Parts are expensive and have a high failure rate in the emissions system. I personally own and drive a 84 mazda built perkins 4 cylinder diesel Ford ranger. I love its simplicity, and it will last forever giving me over 40mpg. I am putting the parts together to convert it to waste veggie oil as we run our international dt466 heuis on it for 10 years with only 1 injector replacement.
