From what I know, the reason diesels smoke so much in this sort of cold start is just because the fuel - especially in an older turbocharger - doesn't vaporise properly in the cylinders, and so burns incompletely, generating LOTS of soot and smoke. Since the prime mover isn't turning very fast, what vapor there is can collect in the exhaust, producing those spectacular, volcanic backfires. Once the fuel warms up and the engine starts turning faster, the smoke goes away.
Diesel doesn't vaporize. The faster the Engine turns, the higher the Pressure in the Cylinders, at least at very low RPM. This is because as the Piston comes up and Compresses the Air, the Air heats up and expands. So an Engine with a Compression Ratio of about 25:1 can achieve up from 80 to 200 bar on the Compression Stroke when running and just below 1000°C on the Compression Stroke. However, on a slow cranking cold Start it is very difficult to get the Temperature in the Combustion Chamber high enough for useful combustion.

nice start, particularly the rythm as it cranks, nice to hear a diferent tone:))
1:37 that beat tough
ikr lol
The latest VW engine inside ;)
Reminds me of a neighbour who used to own a Peugeout 305 lol
“The diesel moved slowly forward...”
“And then... it happened!”
Not overly keen on morning starts is it? I’m not a rail engine person and certainly no expert (apologies to those that are) I believe that the British deltic locomotives were kept running 24 hours a day, even in the sidings. If that is true, I can understand why.
I swear i heard MJ’s ‘they dont really care bout us” between 1:38 to 1:45
Very interresting! Can anybody explain, what is happening? The Smoke is very much BEFORE the first Piston Sounds! Is the Turbo running without Pistons, or what?
*HA HA SILLY FRENCH!* On the side reads _"This locomotive respects your environment."_
Rolling coal the french way. North Dakota pickup truck drivers salute you.
Sncf still uses desiel engine for trains???
Niezłe efekty akustyczno dymne !) + :)

Magic mirror Haha yes! BOOM! :D
Oh no OH YEAH!

"Zero emission, environmental friendly..."
Wow, It's so mesmerizing, usually I only watch cars, but do you allow me to use a part of your video? I will credit you, of course.
but is this a weapon?

Yes a nice Startup with Flames.
So -10 Degrees?
Hundred Years ago many Aeroplanes were also started with dynamite capsules.
See the Film "The Phoenix" with Hardy Krueger!
I'll bet the neighbors love their alarm call.
