I think what Johnny said puts it into perspective: Their messing with the results by not playing their best messes with the careers of other players, so you can say a year ban is harsh, but they could screw other teams just as much and then set an inconsistent precedent where teams who have done this before and gotten the harsh punishment would be mad that these guys get off easy.

In all fairness there should not be a system that if you win all your games you don’t make it but if you lose strategically and then win you make the finals. It’s a flawed system to begin with. Everyone’s goal is to make the finals. You can’t fault them for doing the only thing possible to try and make it. That’s crazy. Especially if they could have won out and not made it. That’s the definition of stupid.

    • @metalsky4140

that's the thing that irritates me the most and nobody mentions it
HAD THEY BEEN BETTER THAN LIMITLESS IN BOTH PREVIOUS REGIONALS, they would've made it
limitless had beat them fair and square for 2 regionals thus earning more points, they deserved to get the spot more that YMC.
if you wanna go major then git gud, those guys tried to cheat the system because they were'nt good enough in the first 2 regionals. there is a reason it takes 3 regionals to decide who goes to major.
had they won even 1 regional final against limitless they wouldn't have been in this situation
This is a very good case of fuck around and find out
they had already lost the moment they gave 2 first places to limitless and tried to cheat to deny them their ticket to copenhagen
The system is perfect, what we've seen here is not a flaw because you are to respect the rules.

@@metalsky4140The fact that this has sparked some controversy, particularly the harshness of the ban, tells me that this system isn't as "perfect" as you believe it to be.
Not tryna hate on what you said or anything, just making a point of contention against your statement the system being perfect.
Another thing to point out, if they lost twice already to Limiless, why do they then have ANOTHER 3rd chance to not inly win, but take their spot in the majors? That in of itself proves an imperfect system.
And none of this includes region hopping, which literally means they are inserting themselves into another (less competitive) group, taking away opportunities from those regions teams as well.
Tbh, they need to just do away with the regions, and have like a "pro" league of like 20 teams, and a "minor" league where best teams during that season get a shot at being in the pro league. (Pretty much how regions are now, but expand everything to be 1 big region). 99% of these games are played remotely anyways.

I think it really is the fact that it’s a smaller region. In NA top 8 say GenG was in YMCs position with G2 in Limitless. NA is competitive enough where it doesn’t HAVE to be GenG playing G2 in quarterfinals. There are several other good teams in the region that could play G2 as competitively as GenG could. I think that the smaller regions need a different format until they actually have a significant amount of teams in top 16 that are all within the same skill range.

I haven't played rocket league in years but this video was gold. Interesting situation that almost is like playing on hard mode not knowing if you have to win or lose to snipe another team. Then this dude comes on out of the blue and puts up some solid points and ends on a banger. The one thing I don't know if it was applicable but also potentially creates an issue with throwing is that there could be another team that also needs a weird scenario to play out and it didn't because these guys threw. But also, you should have just won all the matches and you could have avoided that.

They shouldn't be banned if they decided this strategy was the best way to make it out of their region. It's a competitively viable strategy in the long run. If they threw to help another team at their own expense that's obviously a ban. If this was the only viable way for them to make it, then it's a poor format.
9:29 this is a good take but only ban if they lose vs Limitless. It would be hard to determine the intent based on a single outcome. If YMC made it out of the region, then they clearly had the will to win. Forcing people to compete is very cringe.
    12:12 exactly
13:00 being bad at "cheating" shows integrity...compared to desperately trying to hide it.
they should own up to throwing and make the case that there was no point in trying if they wouldn't be allowed to play in the major.

From the perspective of an organizer who financially justifies putting on a tournament via broadcasting, I understand banning throwing. It's bad for viewers and therefore bad for advertisers like you said. So I do understand why it's in the rulebook. However, in a purely strategic and ethical vacuum, if a team is able to position themselves within the format to where a loss is advantageous then they should be allowed to just forfeit the game outright. Don't even force them to play and put on a show. It's not bad sportsmanship to make the decision which is most advantageous for your team. I think it's important also to keep in mind that it's not like throwing games is some hack or cheat for bad teams to suddenly win when they don't have the skill to do so. In order to be in a position where throwing is advantageous, you necessarily have to have a strong record in the tournament to begin with.

There are situations in basketball where missing a free throw at the end of the game to try to get 2 or 3 points instead is the only way to win while making the free throw ensures you lose. Making the free throw in that case is actually a throw.
The format causes a conflict of interests and smart teams would likely do the same in the future while being less obvious. Which may be good enough for viewers.

But I think he has a point that there should be different punishment when different rules are broken. And this is only one of the many flaws in the way Epic is hosting the Esports. Epic is not only actively killing RL esports in several ways (prize money, sponsorships, barely updating the game), introducing a flawed format that allows and even invites match throwing/bracket manipulation (imagine if a team manages to do this convincingly), where the two best teams can eliminate the other in the quarterfinals. But then they can also ban players for effectively 2 years, for a small rule break (not saying that YMC is a small break).

@ YMC's actions were messing with other players' careers and livelihood. Why is it not fair that they received a 1-year ban?

    •  5 месяцев назад

@@winthie I didn't say YMC's ban is not fair, or that it should have been lighter. I only said I disagree with Epic for having no guidelines for the severity of punishments on different rule breaks and setting the precedent of punishing everything the same.

in NHL they do that for getting better chance to get first pick.

Easy fix: Get rid of losers brackets. If you lose you should be out. This is why pro sports teams lose games to help better their future picks. It’s essentially what’s happening in RLCS with matchups.

So, the way you explained it, made it seem like the ONLY way they could qualify was if Limitless lost in the QF, and they won whole bracket.
They couldve played the entire tournement legit, faced Limitless in the final, won, and still had Limitless qualify over them, and I can understand how entirely frustrating and unfair that would seem to the players.
What YMC did, was to actually give themselves a shot at qualifying without having to rely on another team beating Limitless, it was actually crazy smart of them to find the specific path needed to be qualified over Limitless, and I do think the format is partially to blame for the entire situation.
Yes, as you said, they couldve just, not thrown the games, but at the same time, if the format was constructed in a better way, they wouldn't of needed to go to these lengths to have a chance to qualify in the first place.
    eh, idk.

it's not because of the format, the reason they got banned was for throwing... you can't target your own teammates and go for boost across the field and leave a wide-open net just to lose... if they did the tournament legit then lost, they wouldn't be banned. they made it obvious, and their plan was to throw games to have a better chance at qualifying. epic or whoever was watching them, made a good choice to ban them for throwing because that's exactly what they did, it's not like they played the tournament legit and lost... they purposely threw games to have a better chance at qualifying, don't get me wrong. it's a smart move but you can't throw games just to have a better chance at qualifying, that's " cheating."

"I can understand how entirely frustrating and unfair that would seem to the players."
      Stop. This. Nonsense.
Unfair? Unfair that even if they beat Limitless 1 out of 3 times, they still don't make the major? You can't be serious. People seem to forget they had 3 events to use to make the major, not just this last one. The situation they were in going into Q3 was because they weren't good enough to beat Limitless before. What's funny is they thought they might even have a chance of beating them in the quarterfinal this time. Just accept it: these kids hopped to SSA thinking it would be a free pass to the majors/worlds. It wasn't.
If anything, I hope this gets Epic to put the region rules back into place so it makes it much more difficult for teams to hop regions.

Actually, if throwing puts you in a better spot for the overall tourney, then "This is Rocket League!". Really, that is the choice of the player. If you are in the NFL, and you need time at the end of the game (because your opponent is running down the clock), you let them in the endzone to get the ball back and have a chance.
That isn't bad to throw, it is a part of the game setup. It is ridiculous you would WANT to do that, but it is the team's prerogative to win or lose.

If they didnt throw they basically got punished for winning. Playing to their best technically meant doing exactly what they did, lose to win the game that got them in. Straight up pro gamer move. let me lose 1 or 2 to win big and the one that counts.

All the other stuff aside if they have just one path to qualify and they go for it it's kinda dumb to punish them.

there should be a Junior RLCS. (13-17 y/0) Keep the 1 year ban. ends when they turn 18 and then can join the RLCS (18+).

Such reaction. I didn't know so many people are fans of win to loose. They found a way to win and get banned a year for it. And people wonder why rlcs went no where and is going no where.
