Funny thing, that "just be yourself" mantra. I agree with it. However, when it comes to myself, I've had a hard time living up to it. There's some sort of bizarre thing about me where others feel completely free to tell me how awful they think I am. Like, my existence erases the social norm of not just openly calling someone out. Like, of we see a 500 lb fat person, nobody just goes up to them and says "God your fat. What a loser you are." But with me, people feel completely entitled to do these types of things. It's the strangest friggin thing and it's happened all my life. It has led to me being very guarded around others yet being guarded doesn't lead to a fulfilled life or the authentic outward expression of who I am. I am grateful, though, that have a wife and three children who allow me to be me. That's been the life saver. That being said, it would certainly be nice to just be myself openly. I'm tired of living with a bitten tongue, clenched jaw and held breath. The last time I said eff it as just acted like myself, it was in Hawaii for my brother-in-law's wedding. I was having a grand ol time. Laughing, living it up. Then one day my wife comes into the room balling her eyes out and says she just had the biggest fight with her dad. He told her that she had married human garbage. A sad excuse for a man. That I was a freeloader who never worked a day in my life and that my schizophrenic mother was right with her abuse of me. Lastly, be told her that she needed to divorce me. Anyway, thank god for my wife. She had my back and her dad lost out in the end. But it's moments like that that make me more than gun shy to just be myself.

I hear you about the "shunted to the side of your own life bit". I had for me what i thought i wanted, a good solid job in a multinational and i was being promoted. Got to my target level after a few years, and was being paid well. I was seriously unhappy though, mainly because the job career and and house stuff is really not important to me but we are programmed to go for that. I crave and have always been obsessed with adrenaline in sports. And you do not get that in a steady job and career. I get it in sports that i love and am obsessed with. I changed what i was doing when i got a redundancy option and now i've got zero job security and work through agencies only, but i'm making enough money to spend massive amounts of time pursuing what i actually love to do. It has made me far happier, even though sometimes i get a bit of fear about my lack of security. The fear of going back to being in golden handcuffs is even worse, so it does stop me from going back to security.

One of the better videos that I have listened to. This compilation should be a learning block in high schools. Much of this wisdom is hard earned and only self evident as we move through life. How nice it would have been to be exposed to these ideas as a teenager.

    • @pn5721
      @pn5721 Год назад +1

Exactly. Kind of an off the wall addition to your observation, but another thing that young people ought to read when they're about 15 is Plato's "Republic" (the Allan Bloom translation).
It's not hi falutin' stuff - it's the story of Socrates getting waylaid by some well born young men and prevented from leaving the city he is about to leave.
He's good naturedly forced to turn back and spend an evening with these young men and what they do is "construct a City in Speech." I'm serious when I say that, had I read it when I was fifteen instead of thirty five, it would've saved me a ton of grief.
By the way, the Straussians think the ending is not what Plato is seriously recommending, but instead he's showing what one gets when one believes one can attain "Justice" - showing the ridiculousness of what perfect " justice" would entail

35:15 Thank you Chris! Much respect. This is exactly where I struggle in life as well. I personally think it has to do with how we as humans tend to prioritize which parts of our lives we manage in quantitative versus qualitative ways and to what extent. If change is the only constant then the bar gets raised or lowered in several aspects relative to external events on both micro and macro levels.

  • @dalibofurnell

I think that in that transition place between being and becoming, what is important is to not let that place be a void, but to let that place allow you to find out who you are, embrace that and try it out- be you, try to be who you are, finding the balance through growing through what you go through within that grit grounding place and standing up with grace feeling peace as the shoes of your feet ;) then move, tap into that flow . There's more to it of course, but I do not yet have much to give , as I am busy with it right now, but I appreciate the opportunity to be grateful and trust the process and excercise my faith and allow my perseverance to be a blessing , and trying to let go of the lies of being worthless etc, in order to receive the love I need to be me, and who I am created to be, and to come to truly believe that I am blessed and worthy, and what's beautiful about that is the why , which is to be able to bless others .. blessed to be a blessing 😊

Solid. So helpful. And I love to see these monologue episodes when they have occasion to come about. It seems as though there may be a need for a regular, monologue outlet for you (Chris), too. You've evolved and matured right before our eyes, and I think you're knocking on the door of BEING one of the big thinkers you invite to contribute to the benefit of the audiences' lives. I've noticed your interviews' balance shifting towards you expressing your thoughts more and more, and I've begun to recognize that you've begun to HAVE more and more to say/contribute... you're no longer just a mechanism to deliver the ideas and insights of others....over these years, you've shifted to another gear, being less of a transmitter and more of a generator... I think carving out more monologue episode time will give you the outlet you (and we) need while preserving the conversational balance of an interview dynamic when you do have guests....

At the end there, you said you’re not trying to get in the way of your guests etc. which is a beautiful & humble statement. That being said, no one can absorb every moment in your life and hear all the amazing things you have heard from each of these guests on your podcast or behind the scenes. So you sharing your individual insights and allowing others to know and hear stories of your life, perspective, growth, & realizations can also have quite important impact as well. Everyone receives information differently. A lessons can be a statement, like a quote, but the stories are like the legends or myths that are easily received by a variety of people that have all different levels of capacity. In some cases reaches the soul better than written words especially with a variable audience.
Thank you for sharing both pieces ❤️

Well done Chris. Eloquent and prescient as usual. We must push things forward in a ‘selfish’ way yet helping others when appropriate.

The "cheat code" (at 37:20) that i've found in my life, and that has been working pretty well, is mostly mindfulness and a mix of hope and gratitude. Let me explain.
Mindfulness puts you in the present. You gotta be aware of your present moment, and know that is it time for. Is it planning time, or living time? If it's planning time, then plan everything that you need. If it's living time, just focus on what you're doing right now. By default I try to stay in living moment, while the big problem you seem to be addressing in being in planning mode by default. Just understand that every moment, every second of your life is important and worthy of attention.
The being vs becoming, or the growth vs presence, which seems to be the same problem, is quite paradoxical for me. How do you become if you are not being? Become the Being, and Be the Becoming. It's all one thing if your mind is set on what you want to be. This, however, only applies personally, that is, what kind of person you want to become. Professionally, goals and the stuff, its all a matter of planning (and brainstorming sometimes, but i wont go into that) so it's somewhat simpler than it seems, if you are already the person you want to be.
Becoming who you want to be in this context has much more to do with personal and, let's say, spiritual growth, than professional. It has to do with vision and virtues, and once you get that straight and consistent, then the path to your highest goal will become the "path of least resistance", because you are so honest with yourself that anything other than your highest objectives will become a dreadful path. It's kind of the same logic that Jordan Peterson applies when he talked about lying, that "[the consequences of telling the truth is always better than that of lying, no matter the context]" (paraphase). Soo when you get your virtues right, you can know what you should want to want, and then you can start being honest with yourself about the changes you need to do to yourself, and thrught that, integrate all that with your acting in life (and it's at this moment that all this internal work spills out to external, or professional, work).
Wanting to achieve vs being grateful for your acomplished achievementes is simply a matter of looking to the future or to the past. There is no problem there as long as you project your future achievements and goals into a hopeful future, instead of "mentally demand" that they manifest at the exact moment.
