Proximate & Ultimate Reasons for Human Behaviour -
"Happiness comes down to the choice
The discomfort of being aware of your mental restrictions.
Or the discomfort of being ruled by them." - I dont think its direct Happiness but rather Safety since in an Evolutionary sense:
The brain is always searching and seeking safety. It scans for threat every fifth of a second, below our conscious awareness. We make decisions continuously about our circumstances out of conscious awareness - and it is this modus operandi that drives behaviour.

You have nailed it in this episode. This reminds me of myself 5 years ago.
I am working as a male nurse in a psychiatric clinic. Since i am working in this field for over a decade now, i had developed some very cynical view on the world 5 years ago.
But 5 years ago we had a women who was pregnant with a boy she wanted to abort.
She had constant mood swings and was in a deep crisis, because of familiy matters.
She didn't know if she could raise the child when it was born because of her situation.
It were the hardest 5 months of my life in terms of working with a patient.
In the end she gave birth to the boy, i even had call the ambulance to transfer her to another clinic, because the boy was born a little bit to early.
5 years later she is still writing a letter of gratitude every christmas to our unit. The mother and the boy are happy and well.
This changed my whole view on life and reminds me no matter how dark things seem there is always a ray of light.

Man, Chris. That last one really got me. I just quit my job to study as an artist from home. I constantly compare myself to my heroes, and all the inspiring people I see making great things online. At work, they seemed to think of me as a self-improvement guy. I'd fast, read books like Atomic Habits and Steal Like An Artist, avoid bingeing Netflix. But I always thought, "Doesn't everyone want to improve themselves?" After spending time with real people in the real world, I guess not. It might be okay for some people, but not for me.

Chris, you made a very insightful point in this episode, which I had previously realized, but kinda forgot about for a while. That point was that with the advent of global communication via the internet, any endeavor we engage in is now directly comparable to that of the rest of the world. Instead of only having our local community to compare our achievements to, we now have the other 8 billion people on Earth to compare ourselves to. And the chance that a person will become the best at anything is 1 in 8 billion instead of 1 in several thousand or so. Those astronomical odds are enough to discourage most people from attempting to be the best at something. And that brings me to the point that I had forgotten, which is that we don't need to strive to be the "best", we only need to strive to be better than we currently are, in order to progress in our endeavors. I feel a bit more confident in myself now having heard you talk about that. Thanks.

Improving your vocabulary is like attaining a sharper scalpel... you can cut and define ideas more precisely, go from broad concepts ('good' 'bad' 'happy') into much more complex definitions - and the understanding of that complexity doesn't exist until you can define it. I think there's a fair argument that a lot of intelligence can be explained purely by language skills (whether that be a conversational language like English or a notational language like music scores, drum patterns, or coding).

I've been drifting into a position of cynicism with time and it's easy to tell yourself that the paranoid survive, but the fact is that it's not about surviving.
The paranoid survive, but the ones that THRIVE are the paranoid that are also crazy optimists and have an incredible vision and drive for the future.
Yes, look at your failures and correct your mistakes, but don't forget that you can't get good without failing, and realise that hating other people won't make you any better than you currently are.
It'll just make you feel momentarily better than someone else, while sinking yourself in darkness and inaction.

This episode answers my question from episode 206 - so these are some things that helped you walk through that awful middle ground and come out happier and stronger on the other side, on a new level of wisdom. I took a couple of hours to watch and digest this very digestible yet deep and rich input. This is like a buffet of intellectual superfood haha. Much love to you.

    • @pada5992
      @pada5992 Год назад

I just now realize that the picture of the buffet is the healed picture of my very old phrase that so much in life seems like an abundant buffet of so many "somewhat delicious looking" things that each are burnt or poisoned in some way. Yes there is so much abundance and freedom, but then whatever you choose, ends up being not so enjoyable or not so good for you. It seemed like this for many years in many situations. I turned it and looked at it from every angle but it just felt like a burnt buffet.
I have come a long way and found several mentors, some of which you mentioned or have interviewed. I have found amazing input that healed lots of trauma and belief systems and also some behaviors.
To think that I now consumed something that I would spontaneously call a buffet of palatable superfood for my mind and soul. Just the fact that this picture came up for me, and you know, my subconscious allowing me to see a healthy buffet. Wow this feels like a big moment.

What you said about time brought me back to one of my father's greatest lesson.
One day, my dad was explaining eternity to my little self: «Eternity is not an infinite amount of time, but rather an everlasting "now". Moreover, it's in this world that you prepare for eternity.»
    Yep, he was right.
    Happy 5th podcast's anniversary 🥳🍾🥂

46:56 "Letting go of that desire -that requirement to always be in motion, to always be in conflict- is very very difficult, but it's something that I am trying quite hard to do."
This is one of those contradictory statements.
Letting go is the opposite of "very very difficult". Letting go is something you don't *try to do*.
Stop *not letting go*. Stop doing it and it is stopped. It's right there.
It's like saying, "I'm trying very hard to stop clenching my fist. It's very very hard to stop clenching my fist. I'm trying quite hard to stop clenching my fist."
It's one of those experiential skills that seems non-intuitive or even impossible until you know how to do it.
Once you know how to do it, it seems trivially easy and like it was there all along.
Of course. I could just... stop clenching my fist.
I could just... stop not letting go.

This is a great video. The topics and believes are really profund to the human beinf self preservation and awareness. Thanks Chris for another helpful video for anyone to become 1% their better version ( honestly I think with 1/2 of the topics anyone would already become a closer/align version of their real selfs).

Love your podcast. I learn lots, I have episodes to point friends to, and it feels so good to know that fellow humans are on a very good path working through all that is going on in today's world. Thanks so much for doing this.

Yes and ask him to clarify his stance on child adult relationships. He basically said that if I child is sexualized inside the home that child doesn't know its abuse and may not think its a bad thing and society is what tells the child is bad! Anyways that's when I stopped listening to him ...

Congratulations on five years and going. I've enjoyed a number of your conversations over the past few years and appreciate the intelligence and patience that you and your guests bring. If I may, I'd like to suggest a couple of books that I don't know if you've read.
First is Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus. This book is like the intro to Absurdist philosophy, how to make your own meaning and find happiness in an inherently meaningless universe. Whether or not you've read it or are familiar with Absurdism, several of the ideas you lay out here feel Absurdist.
The second is Personal Knowledge by Michael Polanyi. The essence of this book is the difference between explicit and tacit knowledge, the difference between know-what and know-how. It goes into the knowledge that lives behind actions that don't use conscious knowledge.

"High achievers are driven by a fear of insufficiency." The flip side of this is the desire for the esteem of your peers.
I would bet most antisocial people tend to be low achievers for the same reason. However, what constitutes high or low achievement is in the eye of the beholder. The default social view is that achievement involves public esteem.

I've been preaching positivity for so many years not blind positivity but deeply introspective, sympathetic, informed and proactive positivity
As much as I have the time and the bandwidth to be able to follow a podcast this long I really wish you would take these chapters and make them individual videos there is just too much all at once for people like my child to be able to consume and ponder
Like as Zen student may clap their hand on their thigh for months wondering why the master still says he doesn't get it
Each section on this is it's own puzzle to to be put in the context of ones own life
