  • Slovenia is a nice country BUT not everything is so perfect as people may think after a week of holiday spent here. So what is good and what is bad here?
    In this video we explained what we like and what we dislike about Slovenia after several years of living here.

    Great video, it's very interesting to hear about how foreigners view our country once they actually experience life here first hand.
    It's interesting to hear that people tend to make the country seem better, especially since we like to describe ourselves as cynical.
    The politeness with controversial topics can certainly be a problem sometimes, at least with people you don't know very well. We tend to discuss things very openly with most of my friends but a lot of people react very differently to someone starting a conversation like that.

    As a Slovenian, I feel like a lot of these observations are correct. I have to say the only thing that surprised me was the fact that you think Slovenians think they're the best and like to brag about their country's greatness. I feel like the fact that we like to be polite means we wouldn't do that. Sorry to hear you had bad experiences with that, but I think when it comes to sports, it's mostly meant as a joke. Could it be different in different parts of slovenia? I feel like in prekmurje it really is the case that everyone does this, but it feels very friendly. It's not impolite at all. It's more like an abundance of enthousiasm about everything from food to nature to sports. I do not feel like people are actually feeling superior, but they say it very casually, and it always sounds like a lot of fun,

    • @TheCrazyFreak
      @TheCrazyFreak 4 года назад

      @@ansleandi3906 There are some differences between different regions of the country, of course, but I'm not sure whether bragging is in there. The thing is... What you just described to me doesn't sound like "bragging" to me. Of course if we learn someone's visiting from a different country or moved here from somewhere else we're going to get excited and talk about what we love about Slovenia. To be honest, I might do that myself as well. xD But with bragging, there's an implied air of superiority, a "we're better than you" mentality.

    The "we are better than you part" goes only for eastern and balkan countries. Everything to the north and west, is considered to be better. It's a well known slowenian issue. We were always tought that we were superior to those in the east and south and inferiour to those in the north and west. And we totally bought it. Lots of slovenians still are buying it... While in the Mediterranean people are bubbly and social because the climate supports such activities. Centuries later you have country specific behavior. Americans just expect all Europeans to act the same. Who cares how you are after being asked if the question isn't honest? English speakers ask but don't even expect an answer to how your day went and what your mood or health is. It's an empty question and simply a figure of speech.

    There's a reason Slovenes didn't like refugees from the last migration that happened. Watch the video called 'Big trouble, little Europe: open borders in Slovenia' by barbara4u2c, she explains it well.

    To paraphrase my experiences, I have to same experience that is really really hard to make friends in Slovakia, and even in Greece was not so easy as it seems, people simply move in closed circles. But on the other hand i realised that Slovak society is changing too, that people search contacts with new people like through some Facebook groups, and the White night there were 200 000 people in Bratsliva, i have never seen some many people on one spot in my life. I thought Greeks think that Greece(i lived in Greece) is the best/the most beautiful country in the world, I noticed though that Slovenians have hard to understand that it can be better than Slovenia, more job opportunities for example. They tend to think that situation with the job market is normal, while is not. I am even afraid to work for smaller companies now, since there is high probability that it will not work out financially, that my salary will not come on time, that I will not get a permanent contract, or that they will make me open a s.p., sole proprietor company in order to give me work. At the same time where i am now, in Bratislava I have a work contract for indefinite time from the beginning, after the probation period, something that it is seems an unicorn in Slovenia, and most of all it is in good company. And if i decide to leave this job, i can easily find similar in Bratislava or Prague and this even my Slovenian friends fail to understand.

Just like u said the people here are very closed. Its very hard to find people just smiling on you for nor particural reason, maybe just make life better for each other. And when comes on people working or just remaining in tourist locations they are often almost rude, giving wrong informations just to get rid of and in overall acting like dont like me (and not only me i saw them acting like this on others people too.) I think people tend to be a bit shy around here. It's not that we don't like foreigners or that we deliberately appear closed, it's just that we're not used to people from other countries (excluding ex yugoslavia) to take interest in us, as in place where people would actually move to. I could be way off, but that would probably my best attempt to explain how I feel. Other than that I personally love foreigners and I don't care about where you're from, what you believe in. There are good and bad people wherever you go, so I always try not to have any prejudices towards anyone.
    And speaking of nowhere to go or do. In Primorska, most of small towns have "vaška veselica/šagra" during summer towards end of week. It's usually few 100 people, a band playing and lots of beer/wine consumed. Portorož is also really nice during Summer - winter, not so much. :P

    • @jurefticar
      @jurefticar 6 лет назад +1

      Hey Gergely, I'm assuming you're coming from Hungary, so I'd advise you to take this route: Lendava (or anywhere in the Prekmurje region) to get the laid back feel and the nicest people in the country. Advance to Maribor, ckeck out the local sights, like the oldest vine tree or Pohorje (not really mountains, but a nice place to visit). Continue past Celje (sorry people living there) to Rimske Toplice, treat yourself to the natural hot springs there (your mother will love it) and our biggest brewery (that you'll love while your mother's soaking), then find your way to Zagreb, which is a place of its own fame, defenitly stay there at least two days not only to explore the city but to meet some of the people. They're great. on the way back to the Alps stop by Otočec to take a few pictures, proceed to Ljubljana (2 days min also), then to the Julian Alps (this is when the mountains come into place). Lake Bled, lake Bohinj, Kranjska Gora, Bovec, Kobarid, ... are the towns. If you go around to Kobarid, it's a stone's throw from Trieste. And also a little more than an hour's drive from Venice, so take your mother there also :) Take a gander on the map, should take you a slow 2 weeks or fast 5 days :) and on the way back take her to Postojna caves for some awe. Hope it helps, but, you know, do the research yourself :)

There are people who think we are superior compare to people from Bosnia or Croatia, but if you would say that you come from Denmark or Switzerland, I'm sure that wouldn't be the case. God I love this channel so much! As a slovenian-norwegian living in slovenia I do realize about cultural differences between slovenia and other countries, and this channel just broadens my view on the world and usually solidifies my love for slovenia.
    Only thing I'd mention are that I don't think Slovenia is right there when talking about tolerance towards the lgbt community. And while we really don't get a lot of foreign big concerts, I'd say that the cultural side of Ljubljana is as developed as any other european city.

    • @foreignersspeakslovene5659
      @foreignersspeakslovene5659  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks, glad you like our channel! You are right with your point that Slovenia could do more for the tolerance towards LGBT community but it depends what you compare with. Some countries are still not even there where Slovenia... The lack of cultural events is mostly addressed to other areas of Slovenia (as we explained in the video) as Ljubljana as a capital has plenty of those.

    About opinions it depends on who you speak to, i come from a very educated family (its a blessing a curse) and of course my parents dont just discuss politics or controversial things with evryone cuz some people here are really narrow minded and they will take it as an attack on them, but when they meet people who are willing to discuss things like that they do
    For example weve been conected to a polish family thro my father's work and weve became very good friends discussing politic in poland and slovenia with them which is interesting to me becouse i got to see the mindset in poland moreupclose this famili is wery open minded not really religious and more left sided so they didnt push their oppinion on us they just told us their wiew

      Yes, these are our personal opinions shaped often by comparison to our countries. When it comes to immigrants we meant mostly people from Europe, and EU, for whom the borders are open and they have the right to move freely. And you are right, we are two Europeans with highly skilled jobs facing prejudices (sometimes), so I can't even imagine how it feels to be a refugee or a migrant from other parts of world.

    Hi girls! Thank you for a lovely video! I have been living in Italy for a while and I agree with basically everything you have stated in your pluses and minuses about Slovenia that I notice myself when I come home for a visit. I have to add one more thing: when foreigners learn our language, Slovenes always need to correct them and explain the grammar. This really bothers me! Anika recently put up a video where she spoke with excellent Slovene skills and lo and behold there was someone in the comments giving her lectures! Why people??? Just let them talk and don't correct the poor foreigners! This is a big pet peeve of mine obviously :)
    The other thing that bothers me very much is how people are afraid to share their opinions and they always try to be politically correct. Living in Italy i have become more open with sharing my thoughts and I'm still surprised how my co-nationals react if I'm very blunt and open. I will give you a stupid example; a frined of a friend was trying to politely say that she thinks this woman was ugly, but used all the different adjectives for her. I said to her: 'Just say you think she's ugly, this is what you want to say, don't you?', and she looked at me like i was crazy :)

    • @emileslo8606
      @emileslo8606 5 лет назад +2

      Ciao Carina, I enjoyed reading your comment and experience. I feel like I need to share with you my perspective regarding locals correcting mistakes and grammar. I'm a bit of a language freak myself (intermediate Slovenian until I move there in a couple of months and hopefully improve 🙈) and I find it funny how the opposite of what you described bothered me: I used to live in the US, in the UK and in Italy and I was never corrected for my mistakes. I found it very frustrating as I could not learn on the way and get better, I would just repeat the same mistakes unknowingly. I'm sure you would agree that when you love languages you want to use them properly. Therefore, I find it essential to be able to be corrected and I am always grateful when someone does it. So after reading you I am actually really looking forward to displaying all my mistakes in Slovenia! There will be plenty of opportunities for the correctors. 😅 Of course it has to be done tactfully and the learner has to take the feedback positively, but I also understand if some people don't want to have their errors pointed out. I hope you manage to view it in better light and that the grammar nazis won't make me regret what I said! 😉 Srečno!
