Right! And, Slovenians consider them self culturally as middle European To clarify my comment; of course Slovenians are slavic (language and a huge part of their culture), but they wouldn't see them selfs as east or south Europeans. A big part of Slovenian culture is more part of middle/central Europes culture, take a walk in Ljubljana and look at the architecture to see what I mean. Also the mindeset that Slovenia is part of middle Europe was emphasized after the independence of Slovenia to distance themselves from Belgrade. Orientationwise Slovenia wanted to be "more like western/central Europe" so to speak, neighbors like Italy or Austria became mor important in that period.

Quick Fix, You forgot to record that in our forests there are on average lives between 500 and 700 bears (currently around 500), between 50 and 73 wolves, and 20 lynx (14 new will bring this year). All this on such a small surface. In most European countries, don't live that much number of these beasts (animals), if they even have any of them at all. Slovenes live with nature! At least most.
It's a pretty complex topic for a foreigner to try to explain….so let's just make it clear, we are definetly Slavic , but in terms of our character and culture it's safe to say that we have some Germanic traits, there is also some Italian influence especially in the West and Southwest of the country. We are sort of considered 'Germans of the Balkans', if you ask our Slavic neighbours south of us, they will often say that we are reserved or maybe a bit more rational&orderly than other Slavs in the Balkans. There is some truth to this. Even our most famous architect Jože Plečnik had a vision of Ljubljana as small Athens, because he noticed that the city was starting to look too German/Austrian...so he wanted to bring back that Mediterranean feel.
Slovenians are Slavs. They have been under influence of Germany, Austria, and Italy (which is not a bad thing), but they are brother Slavs. Lots of love from Montenegro :)
Luka Doncic, Melania Trump, Goran Dragic, Samir Handanovic, Petar Prevc... names that come up to my mind when somebody say sLOVEnia! Greetings from Bosnia
Good video! As a Slovene I should add that we speak many languages, most of us speak English and every village has its own accent, really. A person from Primorska (next to Italy) and one from Prekmurje (next to Hungary) could not understand each other if they spoke in their respective dialects. And one more thing, we go to Brezje to bless our new car, besides other things 😉 Good job.
Maybe younger generations speak English, older generations don't really speak good English. What I find kinda funny is that this generation of 1st graders are the first generation to take English in 1st grade. All of us took English in 5th grade.
A beautiful country with some of the nicest people in Europe. I hope they can find a way to preserve their culture, language, environment and traditions when faced with all the negative aspects of cancer capitalism and global over-population.

Of course they are Slavs. The colloquial Slovenian vocabulary had a lot of German words, in 19th century almost half but today probably less than 20%. But that’s not surprising as Slovenia was part of German states like Holy Roman Empire and Austria for more than a thousand years.
Well Slovenians are Slavs but becouse of Austria and Germany we've strong germanic routs:) Also it depends in which part of Slovenia you are, in Styria(Slovenian) or Carinthia a lot of the words are german and some people even say "Serbus"(Its like basically slovenian version of servus) . But if you go to Ljubljana there is a lot less german words
@@alengrm7488 Servus is Latin word and isn`t of German origin. Even most of Germania (in time of old Roman) was settled from Slavic tribes, not Germanic.
Southern Europe? You need to brush up on your geography. Manny other mistales. Did you say that Žiga Zois climbed Triglav? The guy in the whelcjair he designed himself?
Langus, Žiga gave an initiative. The four locals from Bohinj first climbed to the top on August 26, 1778. Luka Korošec is the first one, who came to the top. The first, among the four that were then there.
As a Czech, I feel a relatively strong relationship with Slovenia. We Czechs and Slovenians have Slavic roots, language and mentality, but at the same time we have quite visible cultural, architectural and genetic influences of German/Austrian entities. I have never been to Slovenia, but from the things I have seen and heard, it seems to me that we really have a lot in common, it even seems to me that more than we Czechs have with Poles and Slovenians with Croats or Serbs. Zdravím do Slovinska naše braty!
One question; why wouldn’t Slovenia be beautiful? 😂 Yes we are small and pretty much no one knows where we are, but it’s one of the most beautiful countries. Not saying it just because I’m Slovenian. And we are Slavic. As far as I know.
for some reason the west when they hear a slavic country they think of this post communist destopian ruin which just shows the disrespect and ignorence of west

I am Slovenian too. The most amazing fact about my homeland for me is, while other countries' anthems talk about war and rise of power and stuff, Slovenian anthems is a few verses of a poem called Zdravljica which basically means A toast, as in cheers. And it speaks about how all nations should be equal and each others neighbor rather than foe. And the whole poem of Zdravljica speaks about wine beautiful girls, having fun and friendship. Another cool things is that Slovene language has not only plural and singular, but "dual" as well. Yep! We speak differently if something regards one person, 2 or 3. Who would have thought that this robust sounding family of slavic languages could be so romantic. :)
Yeah and fun fact - the author of our national anthem 'Zdravljica' was an alcoholic in his later years and he died from cirroshis. He was the greatest slovenian poet tho.. we even celebrate Prešernov dan (Prešeren day) every year on 8 February, which is marking the anniversary of his death in 1849... he wrote Zdravljica in 1844 and it was published in the year before his death -1848 ....btw, dolenjska, moja deželaa

I moved to Slovenia because of my husband and our kids, I started to study Slovenian, I speak 4 languages, but Slovenian languages made me depressed... so many exceptions, no matter how much I try, every time I speak I make a mistake, I decided to give up, I really dislike their language :(
@ultra_SANS The unbeatet I mean, it is hard, but it really depends on the person if it's hard for them or not, by it being their native language, the only hard part I'd say about it, is the mess about singular and plural. Also, if you wanna speak formal, you have to know how to form sentences perfectly. I use more of a "home" Type of talk, which annoys every teacher haha. But I really don't like Slovenia, I'm planning to move abroad as soon as I can, cause I don't wanna live here. Sure, the nature is really pretty but like, I'm definitely a city person (I grew up in one) so I wanna move to a bigger city. I love to admire nature, but wouldn't live just in the middle no where with grass everywhere mountains in the back, woods and a lake. Yeah, sounds pretty but not my type of life style
Wait until you start seeing just how many different dialects are spoken in Slovenia. If it makes you feel any better, even we Slovenes have sometimes hard time understanding each other. :-)
@Miki Mouse actually it wasnt consider that not even close. Western europe was considered western as they aligned themselves with US in times of cold war. The estern block belong to USSR. Yugoslavia however did not align themselves with any of the two block. Even more, Tito lead the effort and successfully created what became known as the Non-aligned movement (NGM ) or 3rd block, a unity of countries all over the world that didnt chose a side in the cold war. Some of the other countries in this block included India and Egypt. The movement still exists today encompassing almost half of UN nations.
Being from Steiermark, Austria adjacent to Slovenia, I know that the people on both sides of this border look similar and eat the same foods, live in similar looking towns and villages, but speak different languages. Slovenia is in Central Europe. Not East not south, but Central.
Right! And, Slovenians consider them self culturally as middle European
To clarify my comment; of course Slovenians are slavic (language and a huge part of their culture), but they wouldn't see them selfs as east or south Europeans.

Of course they are Slavs. The colloquial Slovenian vocabulary had a lot of German words, in 19th century almost half but today probably less than 20%. But that’s not surprising as Slovenia was part of German states like Holy Roman Empire and Austria for more than a thousand years.
In fact, in German language there are more slovene/slavic words then the other way around ...
Well Slovenians are Slavs but becouse of Austria and Germany we've strong germanic routs:)
Also it depends in which part of Slovenia you are, in Styria(Slovenian) or Carinthia a lot of the words are german and some people even say "Serbus"(Its like basically slovenian version of servus) . But if you go to Ljubljana there is a lot less german words

Greetings to Slovenians from Bosnia. Slovenia is a very beautiful and friendly country.

Language is Slovenian :) ,other than that you got most of it right :) . The % forrest is 2nd to Finland. We are great in sports, food and wine. :) Come and visit!
I'm a Slovenian and I approve this message 😉
It was written in National Geographic, somewhere in the 30s that Slovenians like to marry Germans. It was because of similar attitude towards hard work, fairness, discipline and other cultural similarities. That's why many of us still have German surnames.
But in the last decades we had 50% population increase - I guess among the biggest immigration waves in the world - due to immigration from Balkan region things are getting different.
I was one of those who were born outside of the country, my grandpa(dedek) was Slovenian but he passed before he could teach us and i really would love to learn the culture and language of my family
Easy. Just learn from a slovenian
@@aljazpudjak1375 That's the plan
Well, i can help a little bit with that, but i assume you already know what i'm about to tell you. Your surname is literally the Slovenian version of ''Smith''.
@@MrConhobar Yea hahah, I found that kinda funny but cool as it's derived from blacksmith 😊

My dad’s parents were from Slovenia. Left just before WWI.
The First Lady of The United States was born in Slovenia in 1970. More importantly, the Industrial, Art band Laibach (German name for Ljubljana) is from Slovenia.
under fascist Mussolini it was Lubiana 1941-1943
