- Our route to Kamgab takes us through the hottest place in South Africa, into the desert, and down through a rocky and technical kloof towards the Orange River.

The shiny mineral that breaks off into sheets (because of its one perfect plane of cleavage) is called muscovite mica. You get another darker (or black) variant of mica called biotite. Nice videos Matt.
We've loved this series and it inspired us to take our big rig on this trail - reverse of your direction. Just finished (May 2023). Without your Gaia routes we would definitely been lost so extra thanks there!
For those with taller rigs who might also want to drive this route, the water pump station was just tall enough for us at 3m high and 2m wide. It's a wonderful trail - highly recommended.

Could not agree with you more.
Was recently looking for a South African overland / 4x4 travel series to watch... The first, and pretty much only suggestion/channel that came up was (Roam Overlanding). And as much as I've tried watching his videos, they are extremely painful to listen to. Its the photography that is the saving grace.
But with u and Nicole it's so much more natural, and in my opinion the best South African Channel so far in this category. Im not a professional at either, but ur stuff comes naturally and raw... All the other channels are far too edited and dramatic.
This is No BS, just simple trave, l film & , enjoy.

It would be interesting to find out what work needed to be done to your truck after your journey. You could do a short video on what repairs were needed.
No repairs needed. Just took it in for a standard service. These vehicles are made for conditions like this.

Good video. I have two questions please:
1. Do I understand that it's 715km between fuel stops? There are no communities with fuel en route?
2. What % increase in fuel consumption compared to regular tarmac?

Correct. Jerry cans.... Anything between 10% to double, in some trucks it goes way down to 4 or even 2km/l. Our FJ45 Landcruiser with factory-fitted GM 4.1 engine couldn't do this trip, as we'd need hundreds of litres of extra fuel.
Great episode Matt, keep them coming. If you had the choice of changing to a auto transmission, would you? It definitely makes off road travel easier than those of us that run on manual's.
I think so! Especially in low range, I find myself having to change gears every few seconds and my left foot cramped up a few times!
I would like to know what drone did you use to get that type of drone footage?

Hi Matt. Second trip where fridge stopped working. Is it fridge or road related (heavy corrugations etc) that kills it? Is it related?
These fridges should be able to handle conditions like that. Let's put it this way: Think of all the electronics and mechanical parts in the Hilux. They are all exposed to the same vibrations and show no sign of failure. An off-road fridge should handle this abuse better in my opinion.
So fridge then. Same thing happened both times? Or not related? But agreed they should be able to withstand the conditions.

The more I watch your channel, the more I think you need to change the name. Not Matt Dubber. How about The Dubbers? Your wife is probably a better driver, better with the camera, and a hell of a lot easier on the eyes. Give credit where credit is due.
