These guys were just brilliant at first creating and then staying in character every time they were in costume and truly becoming the character while able to talk and react as the character while totally improvising on the Fly. Giving just exactly the reactions and statments the character would.
Stone Cold Steve Austin Ric Flair Hulk Hogan The Rock The Undertaker, were all Masters at taking part of their actual personalities turning them up to 11 LOL truly becoming the character.
Same with the guys from the legendary metal band GWAR when they are in costume. The people do not exist they are just a human slave who works somewhere for them as their alien overlords. Oderus Urungus stated he never met Dave Brockie before, he only knew of his lowly and pitiful human existence.

There's a BIG difference between staying in character in comedy and in wrestling though. Spinal Tap are doing improv comedy that's actually funny on the spot AND managing to keep a straight face. It's much harder to do that than stay in character as a wrestler.
Just plain British humor guys... thats it. Americans would get it, if they had not dropped this bloody tea in the harbour.

There's a scene in This is Spinal Tap where the band have a promotional record signing of the Black album in a record shop. A fan asks them to sign his purchased copy of the Black album with a black marker. He can't see the autographs and they tell him to tilt it to the light.

I've always found it amazing how a fictional band is better than most of the crap out there today. Even a massively successful band like Metallica was showing respect during this clip.

Every metal band in the early-mid 80s loved Tap.
Well some say they couldn't watch the full thing as pretty much everything in the film they experienced first hand. So for us the viewers it was an awesome satire, to actual rock stars (some of them) brought up both good/bad memories.
They are actors AND musicians. All 3 of them are quite musically talented and are extremely good live (I had the pleasure of seeing them live in Boston.) The guy with the crazy mustache and long hair is actually on the Simpsons (voice of Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned Flanders, Kent Brockman, Principal Skinner, etc, etc.)

Duh notwithstand, i was surprised and i guess impressed at that fact. I really liked that they ain't fooling around... Other than they're just fooling around.
That with the crazy moustache and long hair would be Harry Shearer.
And I saw Spinal Tap in DC back around '91 or '92. Great show.
He also has a radio show called Le Show. When he refers to the Saudis he always calls them 'our freedom loving friends in Saudi Arabia".

Yeah, Spinal Tap came out in '84. They do have multiple albums, are all very musically gifts, and perform live (I've seen them live and they are quite good.)

Of course, Motley Crue's 1984 record SHOUT AT THE DEVIL has an all-black cover, albeit with a shiny black pentagram embossed on the surface, which you can only see by tilting the cover just so. 1984 was also the year the SPINAL TAP film was released, though it was filmed in 1983.
