Someone who doesn't want to get into color grading M50 is easier to use. On the Canon M, I miss the flip screen a lot. Also, I'm never sure if it will record 6-7 seconds or longer, it's a lottery.
Hey Zeek, i love your coverage on these cameras an the magic lantern software. Its comprehensive an valuable information. Believe it or not, I shoot exclusively on Alexa for my feature and corporate shoots, but am really attracted to the micro form factor something like this would provide. I'm looking at building an eos rig but i was wondering if you have or could make a comparison video between the Eos M and the 5D Mii. Specifically as it applies to my type of work, i'm trying to figure out which of the two i should go for, an what would be valuable to see is a side by side test of an EOS M with that nifty speedbooster and those canon FD lenses Vs. the full frame sensor of the 5d Mii with the same lenses. I want to lean towards the EOS M because of its size, but i'd rather invest in the better image quality just as i'd be using this as a C cam to match up with my 2.8k Alexa footage. Would love your insight on this.
Good job, love the cinematic look of the M, and the autofocus on the M50, very interesting comparison, for the test of the dynamic range , using dual iso in 2.5K perharps should be better ?
I’m still dreaming of Magiclantern on M50. I really like having leverage in grading. But I have to say: you‘ve shown that if you expose your footage correctly with the M50 it can look surprisingly good. Sometimes, for me at least it‘s just not possible to expose 100% correct (hectic shooting, harsh backlight, nighttime, wrong WB etc...) RAW really seems to help me out in this situations.
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks Zeek. I've read mixed opinions about cinestyle (banding because of narrower histogramm in just 8bit compressed footage something like that...seemed to make some sense) , and unfortunately stayed away. But getting a recommendation from you and seeing your footage: I will definitely give this a shot! Tnx.

A great comparison, Zeek. I keep thinking of going mirrorless, but I am so happy with my old 5D MK II and Magic Lantern raw video that I will not upgrade for video until my old body croaks! LOL! Thanks for this comparison.
👍🏾👍🏾 Fantastic Comparison, Zeek, brother!! I was so close to buying a used M50 a few times earlier this year, but opted for other cameras and gear. I still have my heart set on purchasing an M50 someday, though, to have fun with shooting some short films with. Best Wishes to you and your family, my friend. 💗
Cheers man 😉🙌 I'd keep the cash though haha, new Canon Aps-c Rumours, who knows what's coming. Probs Canon C50 or something else, hopefully a budget option that takes on from the M50. 🎥🔥
yeahh not so close after all, the whole point is not comparing the resolution alone but the usability also. m50 easily records an interview in 4k, something simple that can't be done with the m+ ML
I'd use the Vlog mirror, and disable Servo AF on the Canon Menu with the M otherwise it will hunt. The M50 would be fine only in 1080p with DPAF as 4K doesn't have it. Those lenses I use MF All the time.
@@ZeekEOSZ okay awesome I got the vlog mirror, favourite tool ever, and ill go disable SERVO AF right now, pretty tempted to get the m50 mark ii but I'm gonna try to stick with my Eos M for now! thanks zeek!
Excellent comparison video! It just shows that resolution doesnt matter as much as the image quality and bit rate does. I really wish you had a og BMPCC. It would be really interesting to see how the 10 bit and 12bit RAW compare on the BMPCC and the EOS-M.
Zeek, when you talk about 2.5K, 3K, 4K, or 5K on the M these numbers are the HORIZONTAL resolution of the video. Video folks know that when one talks about 720, 1080, and 2160 one is talking about the number of VERTICAL lines that DEFINE HD, FHD, and UHD (also called 4K). No matter the ML setting, you can't get true HD (1280x720) or FHD (1920x1080) which means you are shooting SD which is anything less than 720-lines. Although if you give-up an 14 bits, or maybe even 12-bits, you can get up to 1080-lines, but not exactly 1920x1080. To scale with quality you need to use Super Scale in Resolve Studio. One can not simply scale--the image gets smaller/larger but quality is lost. (See the lack of skin detail in many videos.) And to get the benefit of RAW, one needs 14-bit data. Also, for video-film the frame-rate must be 23.976 with a 1/48th shutter. So many ML releases simply can't meet these specs. And, locking ISO to 100 makes a camera useless for most people who don't shoot midday, outdoors. Sorry.
I live for the days they will get magic lantern on later canons, can you imagine what the M50 would be able to do if it had magic lantern as well? If it can do 4K itself as is, imagine what it could do with magic lantern. At some point the Canon R5C for example (the 8K 60fps monster) will get it to and that will be the end of any new camera. If you can get super detail on a 200$ camera because of the pirate firmware, then when it becomes available on later models it will be out of this world.
You could use two SD cards, one for ML, and one for Canon in the EOS. Great video! Did you use green screen? Love the small detail work of zooming in and audio is👌
Hi, So I just bought an eos m used. Please guide me where to start, total noob here. I wanna shoot at 2.5k raw. Please share the settings and the ml build. This is gonna be my hobby now.
This is my latest settings video: ruclips.net/video/yZfosm3IuZI/видео.html This is a good export/grading tutorial: ruclips.net/video/hb3iE5djAt0/видео.html I have more on the channel too.
Wow I found my new favorite RUclips channel haha 🙌 It would be great if you could do a video on your color grading workflow in Davinci for how you got the m50 footage to look like the EOS M. Whenever I try to color grade from a flat picture profile it looks terrible loll
I just chuck the clips onto the timeline with the DaVinci settings mentioned here: ruclips.net/video/hb3iE5djAt0/видео.html I plan on doing another video with the M50.
Hi Zeek! First of all, thanks for your work on this channel! Just bought EOS M because of its price (M50 costs too much for me). So, I just wanted to ask about EOS M for vlogging. Few times I saw your examples with your sister sitting opposite the camera. Did you use 5k preset in all those examples? If not, which presets you can recommend for vlogging purposes with continuous record time? (simple 1080 mode has aliasing, I don't think it's a good choice).
You can use a monitor or a vlogging mirror. I would use 5K FRTP or 1080 mode and enable X3 crop with a wide angle lens like the 11-22mm or 10-18mm. I plan on making a video about this too. 👍
@@ZeekEOSZ Sounds good. Thanks a lot! But why would u use crop mode with wide angle lense if you can use basic 18mm+ lense without any crop? Or crop is not really necessary (sorry for that kind of questions, i'm really new to this..)
@@mikejaputz5570 No that's okay. The crop removes aliasing. It's very clean compared to the uncropped 1.6x 1080 mode. All you do is press the "set" button and your in X3 crop modes, press it again and you're out of it. So it's a choice 👍
The M50 would win as it's compressed video, raw will need a little denoising in post or some processing. I noticed in the first comparison of the tree scrlene, the M was a bit noisier in the shadows. Thanks to RUclips Compression you can't tell as much 😎👍
You can but with loaded pink dropped frames and aliasing and an Anamorphic-like stretched Liveview. Not worth it in my opinion. Don't want to keep hopes up for newbies with high fps tbh.
Awesome! Just recovering from surgery ATM, so can't walk about too much just yet. But I plan on doing more vids with the M50 and I've just got my hands on the R6.
Yeah, it looks like I need to find another canon eos M instead of murder my savings account to buy the m50. I was hesitant to buy the c lens, it looks its gonna be a worth it purchase. BTW master Zeek, I'm hoping to see soon your opinion on which full frame canon to use with magic lantern and what would be the benefits.
any suggestions for a really wide cine lens like cosmicar but wider then 16? i love the look of the vintage cine but would like maybe 10mm or wider...do-able?
Does the EOS M allow you to play back the footage in camera ? I’ve been talking to some people and they say they switched to the OG bmpcc for that exact reason. If so what are the work arounds for it ?
Hey zeek great video ...i just bought the eos m and I don't know which lens i should buy ...i want to do short films and b rolls and photography 😅 so basically everything but I'm on a tight budget (around $90) thanks ✌️
@@gokugoku1699 The *7Artisans 25mm* (which, as you may know, becomes a 40mm field of view on the EOS M, because of the 1.6 crop) is one of the best cheap lenses you can buy for the EOS M. You can get it cheap on Wish dot com, although it generally takes longer to arrive than via Amazon or Ebay at a higher price. Except for the 22mm, you can buy any of these cheap lenses used and get them for well under $90 USD. Best Wishes!
I have tried twice to get Magic Lantern to be stable on the EOS M, but it has crashed both times and the recommended settings I have found so far are not really working. I'd love to know what version of the software you are using and what your settings are. Your footage looks great!
why does the eos m looks sharper in many of those clips, especially on the textures of the tree/branches? its hard to believe... haha! man... eos m is like... miraculous.
The M50 4K isn't true 4K it seems, there's some upscaling going on. Also M50 footage is compressed, the footage does look quite soft out of camera so some post sharpening is required.
@@ZeekEOSZ , its 8-BIT 4.2.0 so the scale isn't justified with 4K resolutions because its technically copying pixels, i think. This gives off the illusion that its sharper, at least with Sony cameras. I think Canon lowers the sharpness by default. In general, you cant really trust 8-BIT 4K because the extra resolution needs higher than 8-BIT 4.2.0 DEPTH to justify even 1080p. I edit on a 4K 10-BIT display with decent HDR so the EOS-M shines on it when i look at its original RAW 12-BIT 4.4.4. The majority do not have displays to see true HDR benefits but one day maybe they will haha. Its crazy how companies get away with marketing "HDR, HDR10" TVs but yet the majority of them cant really display HDR content due to being a 8-BIT display with barely enough nits to see a slight change in dynamic range compared to SDR, if any change.
Hey Zeek, short question. I got an EOS M and a autofocus lense from Canon. The Autofocus works great at Pictures, but there is no chaning Autofocus if I shot a video right? Its a bumper right now because I need to ajust the focus all the time while shooting a video.
Hey Zeek, great couple of videos I watched, I just discovered you. I just had a quick look at Magic Lantern's page, I only see the EOS M camera being supported there, but it looks like you are using ML on the EOS M50 with it no problems it seems, is just not fully supported or such? I'm considering getting the EOS M50 cause of the dual pixel focusing and the articulated screen, rather than the EOS M, even though I did like it quite a lot, but very hard to see the screen, I'm getting old and my eye sight is failing me. I had a EOS M a few years ago and was using ML firmware on it with good results, although the latest Canon firmware would render ML un usable, is that still the case or has it been updated to work with the latest Canon EOS M firmware? Thanks for the great videos, I'll keep looking :)
The M50 has no Magic Lantern Raw. Development hasn't progressed much hence no news. The is magic lantern for the latest Eos m build but it's still a bit sketchy. You're better off with Firmware 2.0.2
I work with CGI/3D high res modeling for video and i was bound to see the limitations with 8-BIT so I mainly use the trusty BMPCC Original and EOS M for RAW/ProRes. You can push them both in any direction without having to worry about nasty compression/distortion. You can only imagine the frustration with getting CGI just right in a scene and then see the ugliness with with 8-BIT when trying to get everything to match up in shadows and coloring. The average viewer would think they where seeing footage from a ARRI or RED camera. The M50 is definitely the better 8-BIT CAMERA on the market imo because the color science is already pleasing enough. I loved the a6100 but i could never push it to levels that where pleasing with video. idk, just something about it that seemed....average compared to Canon APS-C.
I have to say I agree. The M50 8 Bit looks better to me than what I've used with Sony. Just lacking the 4K detail you get with Sony. I don't mind the crop in 4K, looks unique and good for wildlife. The EOS M has the RAW advantage of Encoding to other profiles e.g. S-Log or Arri etc. and would for sure work better with green screens etc.
Hi Zeek, I have both the canon eos m and canon eos m2. My question is can I record in MPEG4 in magic lantern and not RAW files? I only have a small size SD card at the moment and it seems to fill out real quick due to the files size of RAW.
Hey Zeek! Do you know if the 650D/t4i performs as well as the EOS M with ML RAW 2.5k? Seems to have more or less similar architecture w DIGIC 5 processor. Looking for something that matches the EOS M picture quality.
650D/700D should be fine. They just don't get the adaptability to speedboosters and other lenses. Those cameras should do fine, though I've never seen their footage with 2.5K Raw.
@@ZeekEOSZ yeah that’s what I was thinking. I have 2 x EOS M w speed boosters and I’m thinking a 650D or 750D will compliment them beautifully for a 3 camera shoot utilising ML auto restart recording for constant coverage. Plan is to stagger recording start for redundancy and to shoot a set up from 3 seperate angles simultaneously. I have multiple lenses and can rent if need be. Thoughts?
@@RhythmicEye Yeah that should be fine. Not sure of the recording limits with those cameras in 2.5K, should be similar to the M. The 650D/700D should be a good addition. There's more info on the ML Forum around these cameras 😎👍

EOS M looks sharper then M50, the results from EOS M making an advance perfomance. Possibly the software from m50 can not match with that hardware realy well, you can never trust of any Version of 1.0 bevore it come near to perfect no matter what it cost
Very nice comparison, I am impressed how you manage to have the same colour look between the two camera in resolve I presume. I like most the color depth of EOS M that seem reacher in some shot. The sharpness seems to be a little bit better in some shot on the M except on portrait shot shot in the garden at 7 min 06s. In fact after good looking, it seems that the depth of field is a little higher on the M50 giving the face more detail. Thank you for your talent, experimentation and sharing of your experience. This help us a lot to improve hour skills and inspire me. Keep on going and have a good day.
No problem! Both are nice cameras for price, I do like the M more though for pure cinematography on a budget, but the M50 would be a better RUclips/photography/quick video snap choice. 👍
EOS M is clearly sharper and better reproduction/less post processing vs the M50...however I need a camera for my gf to record animals and plants. So m50 with its amenities it is.

Yes! I've been waiting for this video! Zeek please do another video with the M50. Now I will watch and comment again. 😂
I was left surprised haha! 😎👌
Right. I have an M50 also and I really like the comparison between the two.
They can match very easily. Especially when EOS M RAW is exported as DNG.
@@ZeekEOSZ so if I export eos M as dng, what would be a good process for grading eos M and m50 footage together? The M50 has log profiles installed
@@muddywatersautodetailingpr9866
I used Cinestyle on the M50. When I dropped the clips in DaVinci Resolve they looked already very similar, some were hard to tell apart. You can check my Facebook to see the M50 and EOS M DaVinci Clips together.
To me the M50 had a tab better sharper image but the 9 year old EOS held it's own. Great video.

With Magic Lantern, Optical Flow & Gigapixel AI my everyday choice is EOS M.

Great video comparison Zeek, I love my EOS M but I also own the M50 great for stills and with these comparisons great for video as well it seems, can't wait for the work in progress to open up the M50, it will be awesome

Canon EOS M footage wins hands-down every shot. Nice result.

Great video, but the example shots were a bit short for you to properly see the differences. Good job i have an Eos M so i know what it’s capable of.
Well dual ISO is still like beta, it needs more development. It has it's flaws. But in general EOS RAW has more dynamic range than the M50 in video.
Very good vidéo , i m looking for a good and cheap magic lantern camera, the eos M is perfect for me.
😎👍🎥🔥
I’m still dreaming of Magiclantern on M50. I really like having leverage in grading. But I have to say: you‘ve shown that if you expose your footage correctly with the M50 it can look surprisingly good. Sometimes, for me at least it‘s just not possible to expose 100% correct (hectic shooting, harsh backlight, nighttime, wrong WB etc...) RAW really seems to help me out in this situations.
Use Cinestyle in the M50 and I mainly expose at 75% IRE.
Tnx.
@@notthesame3606 Cinestyle gives you imo the best Color straight out of the camera, minor to no tweaking is necessary. This is my favourite picture profile. There's also lightform C/N I need to test out more. 👍
A great comparison, Zeek. I keep thinking of going mirrorless, but I am so happy with my old 5D MK II and Magic Lantern raw video that I will not upgrade for video until my old body croaks! LOL! Thanks for this comparison.
Great to hear! I plan to do another video with my 5DII love it :)

Amazing videos Zeek ! thanks you for this. You prefer M50 or Sony ZV 1 ?
I'd prefer ZV1 tbh. It has log profiles.
yeahh not so close after all, the whole point is not comparing the resolution alone but the usability also. m50 easily records an interview in 4k, something simple that can't be done with the m+ ML
I love Eos M since 2019
♥️☺️
Zeek if i want to film myself on the field, how do I set focus or manual focus with the 15-45mm or 22mm what setting do I turn on/ off?

Cheers Paul!
The OG BMPCC is still nice and a fantastic camera for sure. They don't come cheap where I am, at least close to $1000.
@@ZeekEOSZ oh wow! $1000 for the BMPCC is quite pricey! I would skip it also.
Sorry.
Loved the halation I could see off the wet rocks, it really gives it a film like quality. I wonder why it doesnt appear in the M50.
The M50 lacks dimension because the video is compressed. The M has more flexibility as it shoots RAW.
The OG M looked sharper in some parts but overall made me feel better of my M50
Excellent comparison , very close indeed and 10-14bit is the upper advantage for post , nice one Zeek 🎬
Thanks! 👍Yep, comes down to post work ;)

Love the small detail work of zooming in and audio is👌
No green screen haha 😂 cheers!

@@ZeekEOSZ Cool thanks for linking that video. Looking forward to the upcoming one (:
Hi Zeek! Quick question: would it work the AF in the 55-250 with ML when recording 2.5 or 2.8K? Really appreciate your videos!!
Hi can you do a comparison how eos m holds up against iphone 13 pro max prores 10 bit video?
Can you test the low light performance of these cameras? I missed this comparison in your video. :)
The M50 would win as it's compressed video, raw will need a little denoising in post or some processing. I noticed in the first comparison of the tree scrlene, the M was a bit noisier in the shadows. Thanks to RUclips Compression you can't tell as much 😎👍
@@ZeekEOSZ wouldnt it help to filter the noise out with darks? Because of RAW the M should be superior over the M50 shouldnt it? Its just a guess tho.
that 321 fight intro was 😆
Wait...I thought you could get 48fps in 1080p on the Canon EOS M...
You can but with loaded pink dropped frames and aliasing and an Anamorphic-like stretched Liveview. Not worth it in my opinion. Don't want to keep hopes up for newbies with high fps tbh.
hey Zeek, just found your channel, looking foward to getting into your content, squeezig the most out of mid range canon's is what I'm all about!

Best Full Frame Canon is 5D3. No aliasing in 1080p, and has SD + CF Card Slot.
what is the rig you use for your canon m?
The link should be in the description 👍
Как всегда красивые кадры!
Another great video!
Is it possible to use the M with Magic Lantern and record directly to PC, rather than an SD?
Only to SD with the EOS M.
any suggestions for a really wide cine lens like cosmicar but wider then 16? i love the look of the vintage cine but would like maybe 10mm or wider...do-able?
I use the cosmicar 12.5mm. There is also schneider 10mm, zeiss 10mm and angenieux 10mm. There are also 12.5-75mm c mount lenses
Does the EOS M allow you to play back the footage in camera ? I’ve been talking to some people and they say they switched to the OG bmpcc for that exact reason. If so what are the work arounds for it ?
Yes you can playback footage but at a low fps as it goes through the raw frames. You can see it better once the files are imported into MLV App.

@@gokugoku1699 The *7Artisans 25mm* (which, as you may know, becomes a 40mm field of view on the EOS M, because of the 1.6 crop) is one of the best cheap lenses you can buy for the EOS M. I have tried twice to get Magic Lantern to be stable on the EOS M, but it has crashed both times and the recommended settings I have found so far are not really working. I'd love to know what version of the software you are using and what your settings are. Your footage looks great!
Have you tried Crop Mood?
why does the eos m looks sharper in many of those clips, especially on the textures of the tree/branches? its hard to believe... haha! man... eos m is like... miraculous.
The RAW higher bitrate preserves more details in shadows. There were several shots that the M was a clear winner with the shadow details.
Thanks for the reply. Take care Zesk.
Its the same m50 and m1

650D/700D should be fine. They just don't get the adaptability to speedboosters and other lenses. Those cameras should do fine, though I've never seen their footage with 2.5K Raw.
@@ZeekEOSZ yeah that’s what I was thinking.
