  • Village shops were once the heart of communities across the Isle of Man, but they are sadly dying out as the years go by.
Recognising that lifestyle and shopping trends are against them, we realise that they might all be gone (in the form in which we know them) in a number of years time. So, taking the chance before it's too late, we went to capture one such local shop and the life and community which runs through it each day; Caley's Store in Sulby.
We have Graham and all of the customers of the store to thank for allowing us to film one Friday in November 2017.
Our thanks are also owed to the Isle of Man Post Office who were very kind in agreeing to the project.
This film was created as a part of Culture Vannin's ongoing mission of recording the changing face of the Isle of Man. Much of this work can be found here:

I grew up in a little town in Ohio, and we had a country store like this. Ours was a bit smaller, mostly gasoline, but also pop, candy and various things like that. It's a wonderful way to live, and I wish more people understood that, appreciated it, and didn't allow this way of living to disappear. It's no fun seeing the same giant mega stores everywhere, no personality, no humanity. I LOVE this way of living, it's ideal.

That was a generous quarter of sweets there Graham! Proud to have worked with Raymond and Graham for 7 years, and glad to know all generations are still being so well looked after up North.
